[Review of] Stewart E. Tolnay. The Bottom Rung: African American Family Life on Southern Farms

Stewart E. Tolnay has a message to deliver. In his excellent historical treatise on the family life of African American sharecroppers he counters current belief that rural Southern blacks who migrated North brought with them a dysfunctional family structure, a view espoused today by scholars as politically disparate as the liberal Daniel Patrick Moynihan and the conservative Charles Murray. Through the use of interview data gathered from the New Dears Federal Writers Project and with statistical analysis of U. S. Census data, Tolnay\u27s seven chapters and epilogue span the years 1910-1940 from the post-Slavery period and the era of Jim Crow through the Great Depression to the dawn of WWII. His epilogue is essentially a reflection on preceding chapters but with an updated analysis of African American family life in the contemporary urban North. Tolnay\u27s conclusion is that the lifestyles of crime and illegitimacy in the black inner city are largely a function of social and economic determinants and not cultural pathology or moral failings

Evaluation of vectorization potential of Graph500 on Intel's Xeon Phi

Graph500 is a data intensive application for high performance computing and it is an increasingly important workload because graphs are a core part of most analytic applications. So far there is no work that examines if Graph500 is suitable for vectorization mostly due a lack of vector memory instructions for irregular memory accesses. The Xeon Phi is a massively parallel processor recently released by Intel with new features such as a wide 512-bit vector unit and vector scatter/gather instructions. Thus, the Xeon Phi allows for more efficient parallelization of Graph500 that is combined with vectorization. In this paper we vectorize Graph500 and analyze the impact of vectorization and prefetching on the Xeon Phi. We also show that the combination of parallelization, vectorization and prefetching yields a speedup of 27% over a parallel version with prefetching that does not leverage the vector capabilities of the Xeon Phi.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Unions 7th FP (FP/2007- 2013) / ERC GA n. 321253. On Some Open Problems in Many-Electron Theory

Mel Levy and Elliott Lieb are two of the most prominent researchers who have dedicated their efforts to the investigation of fundamental questions in many-electron theory. Their results have not only revolutionized the theoretical approach of the field, but, directly or indirectly, allowed for a quantum jump in the computational treatment of realistic systems as well. Theorizing Audience and Spectatorial Agency

This chapter analyses Georgian audiences and spectatorial agency through several lenses: psychoanalytic film theory, theories of the public sphere and of mass publicity, and media studies of cultural convergence. The first section reads Georgian theatre’s heterogeneous playbills as a syntactical rendering of the audience, the imaginary community of the nation in process of negotiation. The second section shows theatrical paratexts blurring the boundary between theatre and coffee house, creating a theatrical public sphere in which the audience exercises daily public agency in saving or damning the play. The third section highlights the mingling of vulnerability and charisma in the celebrity prologue-speaker, a figure who both judges and entrances the audience while also embodying actors’ exposure to possible audience wrath. The final section looks at the theatres’ encouragement of spouting clubs as a means of channelling spectatorial agency
