    Taxonomies of Model-theoretically Defined Topological Properties

    A topological classification scheme consists of two ingredients: (1) an abstract class K of topological spaces; and (2) a taxonomy , i.e. a list of first order sentences, together with a way of assigning an abstract class of spaces to each sentence of the list so that logically equivalent sentences are assigned the same class.K, is then endowed with an equivalence relation, two spaces belonging to the same equivalence class if and only if they lie in the same classes prescribed by the taxonomy. A space X in K is characterized within the classification scheme if whenever Y E K, and Y is equivalent to X, then Y is homeomorphic to X. As prime example, the closed set taxonomy assigns to each sentence in the first order language of bounded lattices the class of topological spaces whose lattices of closed sets satisfy that sentence. It turns out that every compact two-complex is characterized via this taxonomy in the class of metrizable spaces, but that no infinite discrete space is so characterized. We investigate various natural classification schemes, compare them, and look into the question of which spaces can and cannot be characterized within them

    Regularization estimates and Cauchy theory for inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials without cut-off

    In this paper, we investigate the problems of Cauchy theory and exponential stability for the inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cut-off. We only deal with the physical case of hard potentials type interactions (with a moderate angular singularity). We prove a result of existence and uniqueness of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime for this equation in weighted Sobolev spaces with a polynomial weight, contrary to previous works on the subject, all developed with a weight prescribed by the equilibrium. It is the first result in this more physically relevant frameworkfor this equation. Moreover, we prove an exponential stability for such a solution, with a rate as close as we want to the optimal rate given by the semigroup decay of the linearized equation. Let us highlight the fact that a key point of the development of our Cauchy theory is the proof of new regularization estimates in short time for the linearized operator thanks to pseudo-differential tools.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1709.0994

    Eigenmodes of 3-dimensional spherical spaces and their application to cosmology

    This article investigates the computation of the eigenmodes of the Laplacian operator in multi-connected three-dimensional spherical spaces. General mathematical results and analytical solutions for lens and prism spaces are presented. Three complementary numerical methods are developed and compared with our analytic results and previous investigations. The cosmological applications of these results are discussed, focusing on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. In particular, whereas in the Euclidean case too small universes are excluded by present CMB data, in the spherical case there will always exist candidate topologies even if the total energy density parameter of the universe is very close to unity.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figure

    Blocking light in compact Riemannian manifolds

    We study compact Riemannian manifolds for which the light between any pair of points is blocked by finitely many point shades. Compact flat Riemannian manifolds are known to have this finite blocking property. We conjecture that amongst compact Riemannian manifolds this finite blocking property characterizes the flat metrics. Using entropy considerations, we verify this conjecture amongst metrics with nonpositive sectional curvatures. Using the same approach, K. Burns and E. Gutkin have independently obtained this result. Additionally, we show that compact quotients of Euclidean buildings have the finite blocking property. On the positive curvature side, we conjecture that compact Riemannian manifolds with the same blocking properties as compact rank one symmetric spaces are necessarily isometric to a compact rank one symmetric space. We include some results providing evidence for this conjecture.Comment: 19 page
