Conceptualizing and Designing a Resilience Information Portal

    Get PDF
Cities need to cater for the challenges they face. They must endure, respond to, and adapt to short-term shocks and long-term stresses. This ability is now commonly referred to as resilience. Communication and collaboration are vital aspects of a city\u27s effort of becoming (more) resilient. In particular, cities ought to engage their citizens, who ultimately are those that make it resilient - and who benefit from their city\u27s resilience. In this paper we present work from a large-scale research project with a considerably practical focus. We have employed IT artefacts to conceptualize and design what we call a Resilience Information Portal. This portal is meant to be the unifier of communication and collaboration efforts of a city. Our proposal takes into account that the basic technological artefacts already exist and are relatively simple, but that the actual problem is complex and requires the integration of various IT systems

Open-source resilience: a connected commons-based proposition for urban transformation

In this paper we propose the concept of ‘open-source resilience’ as a promising path towards urban transformation and greater resilience. This proposition is investigated through the process of co-designing a digital platform, providing tools for actors engaging with resilience through urban commoning processes. Such tools will have the role of sustaining commoning projects and scaling them (up and wide) by facilitating processes of knowledge-sharing and networking. To illustrate the approach, we present outcomes and observations from an initial stage of the co-design process, which resulted in a first digital prototype

Facing the Global Challenges: the Importance of Land Governance and the Significance of the Cadastre

Place matters! Everything happens somewhere. If we can understand more about the nature of “place ” where things happen, and the impact on the people and assets on that location, we can plan better, manage risk better, and use our resources better. This paper provides an overall understanding of the land management paradigm and the importance of land governance in support of the global agenda. The paper emphasises the significant role of the cadastre in this regard. Sustainable land administration systems provide clear identification of the individual land parcels and land rights attached to these parcels. This information on the people to land relationship is crucial and plays a key role in managing a wide range of activities in society including adaptation to climate change and disaster risk management

The role of social work education in relation to empathy and self-reported resilience: Results from entry to exit of social work education on the island of Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of people’s lives worldwide, including the work of social workers and the education of social work students. Field placements are a significant part of social work education, but during the pandemic they were cut short and most teachings moved online. The current mixed methods study examined the effects of social work education on social work students’ empathy and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic on the island of Ireland. A matched sample of forty-nine students completed an online survey at the start (T1) of their degree and at the end (T2). A further 229 students who only completed the T1 survey were compared to 70 others who only completed the T2 survey. The results showed improved resilience in the cohort comparison. There were no differences in empathy in the matched sample nor between the cohorts. Thematic analysis of students’ narratives showed that they found the switch to online learning difficult, with some reporting negative impacts on their mental health and the abrupt ending of placements impacting their feelings of preparedness for practice. Implications of this study and future research areas are discussed.</p
