Knowledge formalization in experience feedback processes : an ontology-based approach
Because of the current trend of integration and interoperability of industrial systems, their size and complexity continue to grow making it more difficult to analyze, to understand and to solve the problems that happen in their organizations. Continuous improvement methodologies are powerful tools in order to understand and to solve problems, to control the effects of changes and finally to capitalize knowledge about changes and improvements. These tools involve suitably represent knowledge relating to the concerned system. Consequently, knowledge management (KM) is an increasingly important source of competitive advantage for organizations. Particularly, the capitalization and sharing of knowledge resulting from experience feedback are elements which play an essential role in the continuous improvement of industrial activities. In this paper, the contribution deals with semantic interoperability and relates to the structuring and the formalization of an experience feedback (EF) process aiming at transforming information or understanding gained by experience into explicit knowledge. The reuse of such knowledge has proved to have significant impact on achieving themissions of companies. However, the means of describing the knowledge objects of an experience generally remain informal. Based on an experience feedback process model and conceptual graphs, this paper takes domain ontology as a framework for the clarification of explicit knowledge and know-how, the aim of which is to get lessons learned descriptions that are significant, correct and applicable
Hard, Harder, and the Hardest Problem: The Society of Cognitive Selves
The hard problem of consciousness is explicating how moving matter becomes thinking matter. Harder yet is the problem of spelling out the mutual determinations of individual experiences and the experiencing self. Determining how the collective social consciousness influences and is influenced by the individual selves constituting the society is the hardest problem. Drawing parallels between individual cognition and the collective knowing of mathematical science, here we present a conceptualization of the cognitive dimension of the self. Our abstraction of the relations between the physical world, biological brain, mind, intuition, consciousness, cognitive self, and the society can facilitate the construction of the conceptual repertoire required for an explicit science of the self within human society
Avoiding Discrimination through Causal Reasoning
Recent work on fairness in machine learning has focused on various
statistical discrimination criteria and how they trade off. Most of these
criteria are observational: They depend only on the joint distribution of
predictor, protected attribute, features, and outcome. While convenient to work
with, observational criteria have severe inherent limitations that prevent them
from resolving matters of fairness conclusively.
Going beyond observational criteria, we frame the problem of discrimination
based on protected attributes in the language of causal reasoning. This
viewpoint shifts attention from "What is the right fairness criterion?" to
"What do we want to assume about the causal data generating process?" Through
the lens of causality, we make several contributions. First, we crisply
articulate why and when observational criteria fail, thus formalizing what was
before a matter of opinion. Second, our approach exposes previously ignored
subtleties and why they are fundamental to the problem. Finally, we put forward
natural causal non-discrimination criteria and develop algorithms that satisfy

Disparity map generation based on trapezoidal camera architecture for multiview video
Visual content acquisition is a strategic functional block of any visual system. Despite its wide possibilities,
the arrangement of cameras for the acquisition of good quality visual content for use in multi-view video
remains a huge challenge. This paper presents the mathematical description of trapezoidal camera
architecture and relationships which facilitate the determination of camera position for visual content
acquisition in multi-view video, and depth map generation. The strong point of Trapezoidal Camera
Architecture is that it allows for adaptive camera topology by which points within the scene, especially the
occluded ones can be optically and geometrically viewed from several different viewpoints either on the
edge of the trapezoid or inside it. The concept of maximum independent set, trapezoid characteristics, and
the fact that the positions of cameras (with the exception of few) differ in their vertical coordinate
description could very well be used to address the issue of occlusion which continues to be a major
problem in computer vision with regards to the generation of depth map
From data towards knowledge: Revealing the architecture of signaling systems by unifying knowledge mining and data mining of systematic perturbation data
Genetic and pharmacological perturbation experiments, such as deleting a gene
and monitoring gene expression responses, are powerful tools for studying
cellular signal transduction pathways. However, it remains a challenge to
automatically derive knowledge of a cellular signaling system at a conceptual
level from systematic perturbation-response data. In this study, we explored a
framework that unifies knowledge mining and data mining approaches towards the
goal. The framework consists of the following automated processes: 1) applying
an ontology-driven knowledge mining approach to identify functional modules
among the genes responding to a perturbation in order to reveal potential
signals affected by the perturbation; 2) applying a graph-based data mining
approach to search for perturbations that affect a common signal with respect
to a functional module, and 3) revealing the architecture of a signaling system
organize signaling units into a hierarchy based on their relationships.
Applying this framework to a compendium of yeast perturbation-response data, we
have successfully recovered many well-known signal transduction pathways; in
addition, our analysis have led to many hypotheses regarding the yeast signal
transduction system; finally, our analysis automatically organized perturbed
genes as a graph reflecting the architect of the yeast signaling system.
Importantly, this framework transformed molecular findings from a gene level to
a conceptual level, which readily can be translated into computable knowledge
in the form of rules regarding the yeast signaling system, such as "if genes
involved in MAPK signaling are perturbed, genes involved in pheromone responses
will be differentially expressed"

Multifunctional knowledge bases offer a significant advance in artificial intelligence because they can support numerous expert tasks within a domain. As a result they amortize the costs of building a knowledge base over multiple expert systems and they reduce the brittleness of each system. Due to the inevitable size and complexity of multifunctional knowledge bases, their construction and maintenance require knowledge engineering and acquisition tools that can automatically identify interactions between new and existing knowledge. Furthermore, their use requires software for accessing those portions of the knowledge base that coherently answer questions. Considerable progress was made in developing software for building and accessing multifunctional knowledge bases. A language was developed for representing knowledge, along with software tools for editing and displaying knowledge, a machine learning program for integrating new information into existing knowledge, and a question answering system for accessing the knowledge base
SPIDA: Abstracting and generalizing layout design cases
Abstraction and generalization of layout design cases generate new knowledge that is more widely applicable to use than specific design cases. The abstraction and generalization of design cases into hierarchical levels of abstractions provide the designer with the flexibility to apply any level of abstract and generalized knowledge for a new layout design problem. Existing case-based layout learning (CBLL) systems abstract and generalize cases into single levels of abstractions, but not into a hierarchy. In this paper, we propose a new approach, termed customized viewpoint - spatial (CV-S), which supports the generalization and abstraction of spatial layouts into hierarchies along with a supporting system, SPIDA (SPatial Intelligent Design Assistant)
Recent Conceptual Consequences of Loop Quantum Gravity. Part II: Holistic Aspects
Based on the foundational aspects which have been discussed as consequences
of ongoing research on loop quantum gravity in the first part of this paper,
the holistic aspects of the latter are discussed in this second part, aiming at
a consistent and systematic approach to eventually model a hierarchically
ordered architecture of the world which is encompassing all of what there
actually is. The idea is to clarify the explicit relationship between physics
and philosophy on the one hand, and philosophy and the sciences in general, on
the other. It is shown that the ontological determination of worldliness is
practically identical with its epistemological determination so that the
(scientific) activity of modelling and representing the world can be visualized
