In this paper we propose the use of a Reinforcement Learning (RL) model, that allows the system to learn how to teach to each student individually, only based on the acquired experience with other learners with similar characteristics, like a human tutor does. This technique avoids to define the teaching strategies by learning action policies that define what, when and how to teach. The model is applied to a database design ITS system, used as an example to illustrate all the concepts managed in the model

    Organisational Design & Mirroring in Construction

    The mirroring hypothesis posits that an intrinsic connection exists between the architecture of a product and that of the organisation which produces it, which can influence operational efficiency. The mirroring hypothesis is applicable to construction wherein organisational design is concerned with the establishment of governance frameworks for the procurement of projects and product design is that of buildings and engineering structures. This thesis investigates the hypothesis that design data architecture mirrors component architecture in a construction project. A general procedure has emerged to investigate the mirroring hypothesis, consisting of three steps: the capturing of product architecture, the capturing of organisational architecture, and comparison of the two. The subject project is a completed building. The capturing of architecture is achieved by modelling functional dependency between components in the form of a node-link network structure. It was found that the subject project did not exhibit a high degree of visible or otherwise mirroring, hence the hypothesis is concluded to be false in this case. An explanation is that two architectures within one have been identified in the model. This makes senses because design data is structured into packages associated with design disciplines which are associated with sub-systems, which in turn corresponds to design team structure. On the other hand, the components model was prepared principally on the basis of physical connectivity. The result implies for organisational design in construction that the design management role should either be carried out by the architect for mirroring alignment, or, to mitigate misalignment, by a third party with design background as opposed to a construction background

    A conceptual framework for cloud-based collaborative online course provision.

    The number of online courses offered worldwide by higher education institutions has been growing rapidly. There are a number of challenges and issues that may affect online course delivery and student learning such as the experience of academic staff and students with online courses, design of course structure, creation of suitable teaching resources, and the study culture. Collaboration between universities for the design and delivery of online courses can have many benefits. They include enriched educational culture, fostering of a collaborative environment, resource sharing, cost reduction, and enhanced quality of courses. Cloud computing can support collaborative environments due to its flexibility, scalability, reliability, availability and mobility, resulting in reduced IT costs. It can provide easy access to resources for both students and university staff. A mixed methods research approach was adopted to collect the views of academics and students with respect to cloud-based collaborative online course provision. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with academics from different universities to explore the issues associated with the cloud-based collaborative online course environment. Two questionnaires collected the views of both academics and students in greater depth from a wider perspective. A number of challenges and issues were identified for consideration and incorporation into a cloud-based framework for a collaborative environment. Such issues related to security, confidentiality, ownership, contract agreement, quality assurance, finance, culture and course development. These issues and others were grouped together into five elements, which are quality, legal, security, operation and education. A novel conceptual framework for a cloud-based collaborative environment was developed, which is based on five main elements, illustrating the relationship between them. A prototype was developed to test parts of the framework to illustrate some of its concepts and its utilisation in a collaborative environment. The framework and the prototype were evaluated by practitioners. The analysis of the views illustrated the appropriateness of the framework structure, grouping of the elements, relationship between the elements and the issues associated with each element

    dissertationThe problem of information transfer between healthcare sectors and across the continuum of care was examined using a mixed methods approach. These methods include qualitative interviews, retrospective case reviews and an informatic gap analysis. Findings and conclusions are reported for each study. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 healthcare representatives from 4 disciplines (medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and social work) and 3 healthcare sectors (hospital, skilled nursing care and community care). Three key themes from a Joint Cognitive Systems theoretical model were used to examine qualitative findings. Agreement on cross-sector care goals is neither defined nor made explicit and in some instances working at cross purposes. Care goals and information paradigms change as patients move from hospitalbased crisis stabilization, diagnosis and treatment to a postdischarge care to home or skilled nursing recovery, function restoration, or end of life support. Control of the transfer process is variable across institutions with little feedback and feed-forward. Lack of knowledge, competency and information tracking threatens sector interdependencies with suspicion and distrust. Sixty-three patients discharged between 2006 and 2008 from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities were randomly selected and reviewed. Most notably missing are discharge summaries (30%), nursing assessments or notes (17%), and social work documents (25%). Advanced directives or living wills necessary for end of life support were present in only 6% of the cases. The presence of information on activities of daily living (ADLs), other disabling conditions, and nutrition was associated with positive outcomes at the 0.001, 0.04 and 0.08levels. Consistent geriatric information transfer across the continuum is needed for relevant care management. An interoperability gap analysis conducted on the LINC (Linking Information Necessary for Care) transfer form determined its interoperability to be the semantic level 0. Detailed Clinical Models representing care management processes are challenged by the lack of consensus in terminology standards across sectors. Construction of information transfer solutions compliant with the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Stage 2 meaningful use criteria must address syntactic and semantic standards, map sector terminologies within care management processes, and account for the lack of standard terminologies in allied health domains

    Proof of concept study for fuselage boundary layer ingesting propulsion

    Key results from the EU H2020 project CENTRELINE are presented. The research activities undertaken to demonstrate the proof of concept (technology readiness level—TRL 3) for the so-called propulsive fuselage concept (PFC) for fuselage wake-filling propulsion integration are discussed. The technology application case in the wide-body market segment is motivated. The developed performance bookkeeping scheme for fuselage boundary layer ingestion (BLI) propulsion integration is reviewed. The results of the 2D aerodynamic shape optimization for the bare PFC configuration are presented. Key findings from the high-fidelity aero-numerical simulation and aerodynamic validation testing, i.e., the overall aircraft wind tunnel and the BLI fan rig test campaigns, are discussed. The design results for the architectural concept, systems integration and electric machinery pre-design for the fuselage fan turbo-electric power train are summarized. The design and performance implications on the main power plants are analyzed. Conceptual design solutions for the mechanical and aero-structural integration of the BLI propulsive device are introduced. Key heuristics deduced for PFC conceptual aircraft design are presented. Assessments of fuel burn, NOx emissions, and noise are presented for the PFC aircraft and benchmarked against advanced conventional technology for an entry-into-service in 2035. The PFC design mission fuel benefit based on 2D optimized PFC aero-shaping is 4.7%.European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Grant agreement no. 72324
