Automatic nesting seabird detection based on boosted HOG-LBP descriptors
Seabird populations are considered an important and accessible indicator of the health of marine environments: variations have been linked with climate change and pollution 1. However, manual monitoring of large populations is labour-intensive, and requires significant investment of time and effort. In this paper, we propose a novel detection system for monitoring a specific population of Common Guillemots on Skomer Island, West Wales (UK). We incorporate two types of features, Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP), to capture the edge/local shape information and the texture information of nesting seabirds. Optimal features are selected from a large HOG-LBP feature pool by boosting techniques, to calculate a compact representation suitable for the SVM classifier. A comparative study of two kinds of detectors, i.e., whole-body detector, head-beak detector, and their fusion is presented. When the proposed method is applied to the seabird detection, consistent and promising results are achieved. © 2011 IEEE
Medical Image Classification via SVM using LBP Features from Saliency-Based Folded Data
Good results on image classification and retrieval using support vector
machines (SVM) with local binary patterns (LBPs) as features have been
extensively reported in the literature where an entire image is retrieved or
classified. In contrast, in medical imaging, not all parts of the image may be
equally significant or relevant to the image retrieval application at hand. For
instance, in lung x-ray image, the lung region may contain a tumour, hence
being highly significant whereas the surrounding area does not contain
significant information from medical diagnosis perspective. In this paper, we
propose to detect salient regions of images during training and fold the data
to reduce the effect of irrelevant regions. As a result, smaller image areas
will be used for LBP features calculation and consequently classification by
SVM. We use IRMA 2009 dataset with 14,410 x-ray images to verify the
performance of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate the benefits of
saliency-based folding approach that delivers comparable classification
accuracies with state-of-the-art but exhibits lower computational cost and
storage requirements, factors highly important for big data analytics.Comment: To appear in proceedings of The 14th International Conference on

Spontaneous Subtle Expression Detection and Recognition based on Facial Strain
Optical strain is an extension of optical flow that is capable of quantifying
subtle changes on faces and representing the minute facial motion intensities
at the pixel level. This is computationally essential for the relatively new
field of spontaneous micro-expression, where subtle expressions can be
technically challenging to pinpoint. In this paper, we present a novel method
for detecting and recognizing micro-expressions by utilizing facial optical
strain magnitudes to construct optical strain features and optical strain
weighted features. The two sets of features are then concatenated to form the
resultant feature histogram. Experiments were performed on the CASME II and
SMIC databases. We demonstrate on both databases, the usefulness of optical
strain information and more importantly, that our best approaches are able to
outperform the original baseline results for both detection and recognition
tasks. A comparison of the proposed method with other existing spatio-temporal
feature extraction approaches is also presented.Comment: 21 pages (including references), single column format, accepted to

An Automated System for Epilepsy Detection using EEG Brain Signals based on Deep Learning Approach
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and for its detection, encephalography
(EEG) is a commonly used clinical approach. Manual inspection of EEG brain
signals is a time-consuming and laborious process, which puts heavy burden on
neurologists and affects their performance. Several automatic techniques have
been proposed using traditional approaches to assist neurologists in detecting
binary epilepsy scenarios e.g. seizure vs. non-seizure or normal vs. ictal.
These methods do not perform well when classifying ternary case e.g. ictal vs.
normal vs. inter-ictal; the maximum accuracy for this case by the
state-of-the-art-methods is 97+-1%. To overcome this problem, we propose a
system based on deep learning, which is an ensemble of pyramidal
one-dimensional convolutional neural network (P-1D-CNN) models. In a CNN model,
the bottleneck is the large number of learnable parameters. P-1D-CNN works on
the concept of refinement approach and it results in 60% fewer parameters
compared to traditional CNN models. Further to overcome the limitations of
small amount of data, we proposed augmentation schemes for learning P-1D-CNN
model. In almost all the cases concerning epilepsy detection, the proposed
system gives an accuracy of 99.1+-0.9% on the University of Bonn dataset.Comment: 18 page
Classification of EMI discharge sources using time–frequency features and multi-class support vector machine
This paper introduces the first application of feature extraction and machine learning to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) signals for discharge sources classification in high voltage power generating plants. This work presents an investigation on signals that represent different discharge sources, which are measured using EMI techniques from operating electrical machines within power plant. The analysis involves Time-Frequency image calculation of EMI signals using General Linear Chirplet Analysis (GLCT) which reveals both time and frequency varying characteristics. Histograms of uniform Local Binary Patterns (LBP) are implemented as a feature reduction and extraction technique for the classification of discharge sources using Multi-Class Support Vector Machine (MCSVM). The novelty that this paper introduces is the combination of GLCT and LBP applications to develop a new feature extraction algorithm applied to EMI signals classification. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated to be successful with excellent classification accuracy being achieved. For the first time, this work transfers expert's knowledge on EMI faults to an intelligent system which could potentially be exploited to develop an automatic condition monitoring system
