In this paper a controller is proposed based on linear algebra for a fed-batch bioethanol production process. It involves fnding feed rate profles (control actions obtained as a solution of a linear equations system) in order to make the system follow predefned concentration profles. A neural network states estimation is designed in order to know those variables that cannot be measured. The controller is tuned using a Monte Carlo experiment for which a cost function that penalizes tracking errors is defned. Moreover, several tests (adding parametric uncertainty and perturbations in the control action) are carried out so as to evaluate the controller performance. A comparison with another controller is made. The demonstration of the error convergence, as well as the stability analysis of the neural network, are included.Fil: FernĂĄndez, Maria Cecilia. Development of Biomimetic-Based Controller Design Methods for Advanced Energy Systems

A biologically inspired optimal control strategy, denoted as BIO-CS, is proposed for advanced energy systems applications. This strategy combines the ant\u27s rule of pursuit idea with multi-agent and optimal control concepts. The BIO-CS algorithm employs gradient-based optimal control solvers for the intermediate problems associated with the leader-follower agents\u27 local interactions. The developed BIO-CS is integrated with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based adaptive component for further improvement of the overall framework. In particular, the ANN component captures the mismatch between the controller and the plant models by using a single-hidden-layer technique with online learning capabilities to augment the baseline BIO-CS control laws. The resulting approach is a unique combination of biomimetic control and data-driven methods that provides optimal solutions for dynamic systems.;The applicability of the proposed framework is illustrated via an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) process with carbon capture as an advanced energy system example. Specifically, a multivariable control structure associated with a subsystem of the IGCC plant simulation in DYNSIMRTM software platform is addressed. The proposed control laws are derived in MATLAB RTM environment, while the plant models are built in DYNSIM RTM, and a previously developed MATLABRTM-DYNSIM RTM link is employed for implementation purposes. The proposed integrated approach improves the overall performance of the process up to 85% in terms of reducing the output tracking error when compared to stand-alone BIO-CS and Proportional-Integral (PI) controller implementations, resulting in faster setpoint tracking.;Other applications of BIO-CS addressed include: i) a nonlinear fermentation process to produce ethanol; and ii) a transfer function model derived from the cyber-physical fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid power system that is part of the Hybrid Performance (HYPER) project at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). Other theoretical developments in this work correspond to the integration of the BIO-CS approach with Multi-Agent Optimization (MAO) techniques and casting BIO-CS as a Model Predictive Controller (MPC). These developments are demonstrated by revisiting the fermentation process example. The proposed biologically-inspired approaches provide a promising alternative for advanced control of energy systems of the future

A Comprehensive Optimization Framework for Designing Sustainable Renewable Energy Production Systems

    Get PDF
As the world has recognized the importance of diversifying its energy resource portfolio away from fossil resources and more towards renewable resources such as biomass, there arises a need for developing strategies which can design renewable sustainable value chains that can be scaled up efficiently and provide tangible net environmental benefits from energy utilization. The objective of this research is to develop and implement a novel decision-making framework for the optimal design of renewable energy systems. The proposed optimization framework is based on a distributed, systematic approach which is composed of different layers including systems-based strategic optimization, detailed mechanistic modeling and operational level optimization. In the strategic optimization the model is represented by equations which describe physical flows of materials across the system nodes and financial flows that result from the system design and material movements. Market uncertainty is also incorporated into the model through stochastic programming. The output of the model includes optimal design of production capacity of the plant for the planning horizon by maximizing the net present value (NPV). The second stage consists of three main steps including simulation of the process in the simulation software, identification of critical sources of uncertainties through global sensitivity analysis, and employing stochastic optimization methodologies to optimize the operating condition of the plant under uncertainty. To exemplify the efficacy of the proposed framework a hypothetical lignocellulosic biorefinery based on sugar conversion platform that converts biomass to value-added biofuels and biobased chemicals is utilized as a case study. Furthermore, alternative technology options and possible process integrations in each section of the plant are analysed by exploiting the advantages of process simulation and the novel hybrid optimization framework. In conjunction with the simulation and optimization studies, the proposed framework develops quantitative metrics to associate economic values with technical barriers. The outcome of this work is a new distributed decision support framework which is intended to help economic development agencies, as well as policy makers in the renewable energy enterprises

This book contains the extended abstracts presented at the 10th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference - CHEMPOR 2008, held in Braga, Portugal, over 3 days, from the 4th to the 6th of September, 2008. Previous editions took place in Lisboa (1975, 1889, 1998), Braga (1978), PĂłvoa de Varzim (1981), Coimbra (1985, 2005), Porto (1993), and Aveiro (2001). The conference was jointly organized by the University of Minho, “Ordem dos Engenheiros”, and the IBB - Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering with the usual support of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de QuĂmica” and, by the first time, of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Biotecnologia”. Thirty years elapsed since CHEMPOR was held at the University of Minho, organized by T.R. Bott, D. Allen, A. Bridgwater, J.J.B. Romero, L.J.S. Soares and J.D.R.S. Pinheiro. We are fortunate to have Profs. Bott, Soares and Pinheiro in the Honor Committee of this 10th edition, under the high Patronage of his Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. AnĂbal Cavaco Silva. The opening ceremony will confer Prof. Bott with a “Long Term Achievement” award acknowledging the important contribution Prof. Bott brought along more than 30 years to the development of the Chemical Engineering science, to the launch of CHEMPOR series and specially to the University of Minho. Prof. Bott’s inaugural lecture will address the importance of effective energy management in processing operations, particularly in the effectiveness of heat recovery and the associated reduction in greenhouse gas emission from combustion processes. The CHEMPOR series traditionally brings together both young and established researchers and end users to discuss recent developments in different areas of Chemical Engineering. The scope of this edition is broadening out by including the Biological Engineering research. One of the major core areas of the conference program is life quality, due to the importance that Chemical and Biological Engineering plays in this area. “Integration of Life Sciences & Engineering” and “Sustainable Process-Product Development through Green Chemistry” are two of the leading themes with papers addressing such important issues. This is complemented with additional leading themes including “Advancing the Chemical and Biological Engineering Fundamentals”, “Multi-Scale and/or Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Process-Product Innovation”, “Systematic Methods and Tools for Managing the Complexity”, and “Educating Chemical and Biological Engineers for Coming Challenges” which define the extended abstracts arrangements along this book. A total of 516 extended abstracts are included in the book, consisting of 7 invited lecturers, 15 keynote, 105 short oral presentations given in 5 parallel sessions, along with 6 slots for viewing 389 poster presentations. Full papers are jointly included in the companion Proceedings in CD-ROM. All papers have been reviewed and we are grateful to the members of scientific and organizing committees for their evaluations. It was an intensive task since 610 submitted abstracts from 45 countries were received. It has been an honor for us to contribute to setting up CHEMPOR 2008 during almost two years. We wish to thank the authors who have contributed to yield a high scientific standard to the program. We are thankful to the sponsors who have contributed decisively to this event. We also extend our gratefulness to all those who, through their dedicated efforts, have assisted us in this task. On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committees we wish you that together with an interesting reading, the scientific program and the social moments organized will be memorable for all.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT
