    Computing Probabilistic Bisimilarity Distances

    Behavioural equivalences like probabilistic bisimilarity rely on the transition probabilities and, as a result, are sensitive to minuscule changes of those probabilities. Such behavioural equivalences are not robust, as first observed by Giacalone, Jou and Smolka. Probabilistic bisimilarity distances, a robust quantitative generalization of probabilistic bisimilarity, capture the similarity of the behaviour of states of a probabilistic model. The smaller the distance, the more alike the states behave. In particular, states are probabilistic bisimilar if and only if the distance between them is zero. In this dissertation, we focus on algorithms to compute probabilistic bisimilarity distances for two probabilistic models: labelled Markov chains and probabilistic automata. In the late nineties, Desharnais, Gupta, Jagadeesan and Panangaden defined probabilistic bisimilarity distances on the states of a labelled Markov chain. This provided a quantitative generalization of probabilistic bisimilarity, which was introduced by Larsen and Skou a decade earlier. Several algorithms to approximate and compute these probabilistic bisimilarity distances have been put forward. In this dissertation, we correct and generalize some of these policy iteration algorithms. Moreover, we develop several new algorithms which have better performance in practice and can handle much larger systems. Similarly, Deng, Chothia, Palamidessi and Pang presented probabilistic bisimilarity distances on the states of a probabilistic automaton. This provided a robust quantitative generalization of probabilistic bisimilarity introduced by Segala and Lynch. Although the complexity of computing probabilistic bisimilarity distances for probabilistic automata has already been studied and shown to be in NP coNP and PPAD, we are not aware of any practical algorithms to compute those distances. In this dissertation, we provide several key results that may prove to be useful for the development of algorithms to compute probabilistic bisimilarity distances for probabilistic automata. In particular, we present a polynomial time algorithm that decides distance one. Furthermore, we give an alternative characterization of the probabilistic bisimilarity distances as a basis for a policy iteration algorithm

    Approximating Approximate Pattern Matching

    Given a text TT of length nn and a pattern PP of length mm, the approximate pattern matching problem asks for computation of a particular \emph{distance} function between PP and every mm-substring of TT. We consider a (1±ε)(1\pm\varepsilon) multiplicative approximation variant of this problem, for ℓp\ell_p distance function. In this paper, we describe two (1+ε)(1+\varepsilon)-approximate algorithms with a runtime of O~(nε)\widetilde{O}(\frac{n}{\varepsilon}) for all (constant) non-negative values of pp. For constant p≥1p \ge 1 we show a deterministic (1+ε)(1+\varepsilon)-approximation algorithm. Previously, such run time was known only for the case of ℓ1\ell_1 distance, by Gawrychowski and Uzna\'nski [ICALP 2018] and only with a randomized algorithm. For constant 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1 we show a randomized algorithm for the ℓp\ell_p, thereby providing a smooth tradeoff between algorithms of Kopelowitz and Porat [FOCS~2015, SOSA~2018] for Hamming distance (case of p=0p=0) and of Gawrychowski and Uzna\'nski for ℓ1\ell_1 distance

    A Faster Distributed Single-Source Shortest Paths Algorithm

    We devise new algorithms for the single-source shortest paths (SSSP) problem with non-negative edge weights in the CONGEST model of distributed computing. While close-to-optimal solutions, in terms of the number of rounds spent by the algorithm, have recently been developed for computing SSSP approximately, the fastest known exact algorithms are still far away from matching the lower bound of Ω~(n+D) \tilde \Omega (\sqrt{n} + D) rounds by Peleg and Rubinovich [SIAM Journal on Computing 2000], where n n is the number of nodes in the network and D D is its diameter. The state of the art is Elkin's randomized algorithm [STOC 2017] that performs O~(n2/3D1/3+n5/6) \tilde O(n^{2/3} D^{1/3} + n^{5/6}) rounds. We significantly improve upon this upper bound with our two new randomized algorithms for polynomially bounded integer edge weights, the first performing O~(nD) \tilde O (\sqrt{n D}) rounds and the second performing O~(nD1/4+n3/5+D) \tilde O (\sqrt{n} D^{1/4} + n^{3/5} + D) rounds. Our bounds also compare favorably to the independent result by Ghaffari and Li [STOC 2018]. As side results, we obtain a (1+ϵ) (1 + \epsilon) -approximation O~((nD1/4+D)/ϵ) \tilde O ((\sqrt{n} D^{1/4} + D) / \epsilon) -round algorithm for directed SSSP and a new work/depth trade-off for exact SSSP on directed graphs in the PRAM model.Comment: Presented at the the 59th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS 2018

    FPT-Algorithms for Computing Gromov-Hausdorff and Interleaving Distances Between Trees

    The Gromov-Hausdorff distance is a natural way to measure the distortion between two metric spaces. However, there has been only limited algorithmic development to compute or approximate this distance. We focus on computing the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric trees. Roughly speaking, a metric tree is a metric space that can be realized by the shortest path metric on a tree. Any finite tree with positive edge weight can be viewed as a metric tree where the weight is treated as edge length and the metric is the induced shortest path metric in the tree. Previously, Agarwal et al. showed that even for trees with unit edge length, it is NP-hard to approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between them within a factor of 3. In this paper, we present a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm that can approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two general metric trees within a multiplicative factor of 14. Interestingly, the development of our algorithm is made possible by a connection between the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for metric trees and the interleaving distance for the so-called merge trees. The merge trees arise in practice naturally as a simple yet meaningful topological summary (it is a variant of the Reeb graphs and contour trees), and are of independent interest. It turns out that an exact or approximation algorithm for the interleaving distance leads to an approximation algorithm for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. One of the key contributions of our work is that we re-define the interleaving distance in a way that makes it easier to develop dynamic programming approaches to compute it. We then present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to compute the interleaving distance between two merge trees exactly, which ultimately leads to an FPT-algorithm to approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric trees. This exact FPT-algorithm to compute the interleaving distance between merge trees is of interest itself, as it is known that it is NP-hard to approximate it within a factor of 3, and previously the best known algorithm has an approximation factor of O(sqrt{n}) even for trees with unit edge length

    Near-linear time approximation algorithms for optimal transport via Sinkhorn iteration

    Computing optimal transport distances such as the earth mover's distance is a fundamental problem in machine learning, statistics, and computer vision. Despite the recent introduction of several algorithms with good empirical performance, it is unknown whether general optimal transport distances can be approximated in near-linear time. This paper demonstrates that this ambitious goal is in fact achieved by Cuturi's Sinkhorn Distances. This result relies on a new analysis of Sinkhorn iteration, which also directly suggests a new greedy coordinate descent algorithm, Greenkhorn, with the same theoretical guarantees. Numerical simulations illustrate that Greenkhorn significantly outperforms the classical Sinkhorn algorithm in practice
