    • Activity-Centric Computing (ACC) addresses deep-rooted information management problems in traditional application centric computing by providing a unifying computational model for human goal-oriented ‘activity,’ cutting across system boundaries. • We provide a historical review of the motivation for and development of ACC systems, and highlight the need for broadening up this research topic to also include low-level system research and development. • ACC concepts and technology relate to many facets of computing; they are relevant for researchers working on new computing models and operating systems, as well as for application designers seeking to incorporate these technologies in domain-specific applications

    Fault-tolerant distributed computing scheme based on erasure codes

    Some emerging classes of distributed computing systems, such peer-to-peer or grid computing computing systems, are composed of heterogeneous computing resources potentially unreliable. This paper proposes to use erasure codes to improve the fault-tolerance of parallel distributed computing applications in this context. A general method to generate redundant processes from a set of parallel processes is presented. This scheme allows the recovery of the result of the application even if some of the processes crash

    MultiLibOS: an OS architecture for cloud computing

    Cloud computing is resulting in fundamental changes to computing infrastructure, yet these changes have not resulted in corresponding changes to operating systems. In this paper we discuss some key changes we see in the computing infrastructure and applications of IaaS systems. We argue that these changes enable and demand a very different model of operating system. We then describe the MulitLibOS architecture we are exploring and how it helps exploit the scale and elasticity of integrated systems while still allowing for legacy software run on traditional OSes
