Shared reading of children's interactive picture books

    Get PDF
We report on a study of children and parents shared reading of interactive printed books. We investigated the differences between books with interactive features and books with expressive typography in order to evaluate which features within a book encouraged interaction between the reading participants and the book. 11 parent and child groups took part in the study that involved three observed reading sessions. From our observations we offer suggestions for the development of books and eBooks to encourage shared reading practices

The engineering design integration (EDIN) system

    Get PDF
A digital computer program complex for the evaluation of aerospace vehicle preliminary designs is described. The system consists of a Univac 1100 series computer and peripherals using the Exec 8 operating system, a set of demand access terminals of the alphanumeric and graphics types, and a library of independent computer programs. Modification of the partial run streams, data base maintenance and construction, and control of program sequencing are provided by a data manipulation program called the DLG processor. The executive control of library program execution is performed by the Univac Exec 8 operating system through a user established run stream. A combination of demand and batch operations is employed in the evaluation of preliminary designs. Applications accomplished with the EDIN system are described

Application of desktop manufacturing system (SLA) for the manufacturing of a centrifugal pump impeller using CAD (I-DEAS)

    Get PDF
Desktop Manufacturing (DTM) systems which combine personal computer, laser and other technologies are being used to sculpt objects from computer generated models created on computer aided design (CAD) workstations. As a member of DTM systems, StereoLithography Apparatus (SLA) transforms 3-dimensional designs into a 3-D output. This can substantially reduce the time required to produce a prototype through the process of photopolymerization. The process involves the transfer of a liquid plastic monomer into a solid polymer by exposing it to ultraviolet light. Although the process looks productive, inefficiencies can occur, if incorrect parameters are selected before its application for a particular prototype fabrication. In understanding the correct requirements of the prototype being built, efficiency can be maximized by the use of desktop manufacturing systems

The Economy Of Typography (the Arrangement or Mode of Operation of Typography)

    Get PDF
The thesis will show that the current research into legibility and readability regarding certain aspects or characters of type is incomplete, and will demonstrate what further research is necessary to complete the analysis of these aspects or characters in the economy of typography in continuous text. Chapter 1 will show that the development of reading depends on the legibility of the typography and characters ā€˜recognizing patterns, planning strategy, and feelingā€™ in other words reading and writing are interdependent all depend in some part on the construction of the characters and their relationship to each other. It will also show that readable writing is desirable and important for the readerā€™s sake. Chapter 2 will deal with the practical presentation of the characters of what the reading public read, and the role played by legibility and readability of typography in conveying their message. Printers and designers will also have a working knowledge and experience of legibility and readability which is incorporated into typograhy presentations, and this also is taken into account in chapter 2. Chapter 3 reviews the criteria and methods used in typography readability and legibility research. The research will show that readability is the ease with which the eye can absorb the message and move along the line, and legibility is based on the ease with which one letter can be identified from another. Chapter 4 entitled Analysis and Recommendations concludes the thesis with a summary of chapters 1, 2 and 3 before presenting a comparative analysis of current research into legibility, with particular emphasis on misreading or misrecognition of characters, and provides illustrations of the conclusions reached by way of bar chart and tables. Appendix One of the thesis contains a comprehensive list of the research into legibility and readability. Appendix Two contains the graphics of Benjamin Sherbow showing typography layout supportive of type spacing matters discussed in chapter 2. The thesis has an extensive bibliography of the works referred to throughout the thesis

A software system for interactive man-machine design and analysis of electronic circuits

    Get PDF
The development of an interactive computer-aided circuit analysis program is presented. A graphics terminal is used as an I/O device while an SCC 650 mini-computer is used as peripheral processor. The central processor is an IBM 360/50. Formulation, capabilities and use of the system are discussed in detail. Close attention is given to user control, making the system both useful and versatile. Both hard and soft copies of all plots and tabular data are available. Provisions are made for error corrections and changes at each step of the input. Parameter values can be altered before and after each analysis. Additionally, several existing interactive man-machine circuit analysis systems are described --Abstract, page ii

Multi-community command and control systems in law enforcement: An introductory planning guide

    Get PDF
A set of planning guidelines for multi-community command and control systems in law enforcement is presented. Essential characteristics and applications of these systems are outlined. Requirements analysis, system concept design, implementation planning, and performance and cost modeling are described and demonstrated with numerous examples. Program management techniques and joint powers agreements for multicommunity programs are discussed in detail. A description of a typical multi-community computer-aided dispatch system is appended

Chapter One: ā€œIs this a book?ā€ DC Vertigo and the redefinition of comics in the 1990s

    Get PDF
Not only comics publishing but also perceptions of it have changed radically during this century and the comic book has become a graphic novel; invoking notions of permanence, literariness and artistry. This chapter will examine the changes that brought about this redefinition in the 1990s, specifically with regard to the role of DC Vertigo and the rise of the trade paperback. Building on the popularity of British creators in the 1980s and the success of titles such as Hellblazer and Animal Man, DC launched their Vertigo imprint in 1993, with Neil Gaimanā€™s The Sandman as their flagship title. Having the somewhat paradoxical aim of uniting unique creative voices under one imprint, the majority of Vertigo titles (which feature original characters) are creator-owned and the Vertigo stable is comprised mainly of British authors, many of whom were recruited while writing for 2000AD in the 1980s. Vertigo puts out more trade paperbacks than any other imprint and their great success in marketing the trade paperback form in many senses paved the way for other publishers to repackage their material in similar form. After summarising the position of comics at the close of the 1980s (British invasion, emergent star writers, direct distribution) this chapter proceeds to discuss the emergence of the trade paperback in the 1990s and its role in redefining comics. Relevant industry factors will include: ā€¢ technical advances ā€“ digitising and reproduction has led to higher production values; but also perhaps a homogeneity of style; ā€¢ employment changes ā€“ everything has been brought in-house; ā€¢ marketing changes (star writer) ā€“ uses romantic ideology to assign an author function; ā€¢ maxi-series versus ongoing serialisation ā€“ new permanence of product; writing for a multi-issue story-arc. Outside factors will also be discussed, including: ā€¢ emergent IP law ā€“ this has given more control to the creator; but freezes shared symbols and limits development; ā€¢ mechanical reproduction ā€“ comic book as product; multiple forms; ā€¢ fan culture ā€“ mid 1990s speculators market crash; neglect of child market; ā€¢ social context/cultural expectations ā€“ celebrity culture responsible for the emergence of star writers; youth culture and resisting definition as childrenā€™s literature; ā€¢ new media ā€“ trade paperbacks mirror DVD releases (including extras); ā€¢ bookstore distribution ā€“ challenge to direct marketing of 1980s; brings comics closer to ā€˜properā€™ books; reliant upon author function. These changes in comicsā€™ production and consumption, together with the critical attention now afforded them, have brought the contemporary comic book closer to the notion of the literary text
