    Computer network system for university hospitals in Saudi Arabia

    The use of computer networks is set to become an essential part of the ICT infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. They have the potential to be used in all aspects of society. As an example of an application domain, this study will investigate the likely system requirements for computer networks in Saudi University Hospitals. The principal aim of this study is to investigate the provision of a computer network system to link Saudi University Hospitals electronically in order to exchange medical information. To draw appropriate conclusions and make recommendations that are both systemically desirable and culturally feasible, empirical data have been collected via document analysis, direct observation, interviews and questionnaires, using a sample of 900 clinicians and computer staff from three University Hospitals.     Investigation Interoperability Problems in Pharmacy Automation: A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

    The aim of this case study is to investigate the nature of interoperability problems in hospital systems automation. One of the advanced healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia is the host of the study. The interaction between the pharmacy system and automated medication dispensing cabinets is the focus of the case system. The research method is a detailed case study where multiple data collection methods are used. The modelling of the processes of inpatient pharmacy systems is presented using Business Process Model Notation. The data collected is analysed to study the different interoperability problems. This paper presents a framework that classifies health informatics interoperability implementation problems into technical, semantic, organisational levels. The detailed study of the interoperability problems in this case illustrates the challenges to the adoption of health information system automation which could help other healthcare organisations in their system automation projects

    This paper shows how Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be used to support health planners and demands on a micro-scale and explores the possibilities of using GIS for health care services in hospitals at Saudi Arabia subareas. GIS has several useful functions and tools that can be used in health planning field. The first part of this paper explains the issues that affect a local health care planning and monitoring of catchment area and facilities management. Each one of these issues is covered using several GIS functions including network analysis and spatial data analysis. The second part defines GIS and its possible application in the health care field. In this section, the relevant GIS functions have also been explained. The third part of this paper discusses the created and implemented a GIS application models, which is made for a local health care centre in Makkahh region and Taif city in Saudi Arabia. All the produced models can be applied on any private or public hospital in Makkahh region  and Taif city. They can be used to build a spatial decision making support system for hospitals in Taif region and serves five local health services neighborhoods named as Turabah, Al-Khurma, Rania, Zulam and Al-Moya. In this paper; the former is used to produce drive-time hospital service area and the route is applied at the selected hospital to calculate the size of its served demand. Finally; in this work, three sets of GIS models have been produced. These are catchment area; patient profile and patient distribution; and patient flow models. The results of GIS provided by the combined different entities based on their common geographic occurrence makes it a very valuable tool in epidemiological research, disease surveillance and monitoring. Some recent applications of GIS include vector borne diseases, water borne diseases, environmental health and modeling exposure to electromagnetic fields. Also, our results suggest that GIS is highly relevant to meet the demands of outbreak investigation and response, where prompt location of cases, rapid communication of information, and quick mapping of the epidemic’s dynamics are vital. In this work the former is used to produce drive-time hospital service area and the route is applied at the selected hospital to calculate the size of its served demand. It is recommended that more studies should be done in this work; three sets of GIS models have been produced. These are catchment area patient profile and patient distribution and patient flow models.     A systematic review of the adoption and acceptance of eHealth in Saudi Arabia: views of multiple stakeholders.

    Background: eHealth is defined as “the use of information and communication technology for health”. Adoption and acceptance are key concepts to measure the level of eHealth impact. The aim of this systematic review was to critically appraise, synthesise and present evidence of the status of eHealth adoption and acceptance in Saudi Arabia from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. Methods: Based on a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) guided protocol published with the international prospective register of systematic reviews (Prospero), five databases were searched for articles published between 1993 and 2017. Inclusion and exclusion criteria of studies were applied in which only peer-reviewed, full-text primary research articles in English language were included. One reviewer performed the searches; two reviewers independently screened the titles then abstracts followed by full articles. Studies excluded were recorded with reasons. Critical appraisal tools appropriate to study design were applied. Eleven items from every study were extracted for further synthesis. Results: After duplicates were removed, 110 papers were screened, and 15 studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies were generally of good quality. Thirty-nine factors were identified as influences affecting the adoption and acceptance of eHealth in Saudi Arabia. Lack of eHealth studies from the perspective of health managers and the limitation of studies to few geographical areas were identified as knowledge gaps. Conclusion: eHealth field in Saudi Arabia showed evidence of continual growth in both publications and awareness of significance. Therefore, findings from this review may help key professionals to address the current challenges and barriers and prioritise the main areas for improvement

    This study focuses on the development of a web-based GIS for public healthcare system using GIS web base application choosing Google Earth as a sample . The development of this system is motivated to provide opportunities for the healthcare workers to gain access to vital information that can aid him/her in the location of viable hospitals for the patients to fully enjoy available enhanced  healthcare services. Currently, three major problems still exist in the healthcare geographic applications. This relate to health mapping methods, reusability of health applications, and interoperability issues. To handle these problems, we design a Web based GIS for Public healthcare system to support health data sharing and representation. The developed model makes it possible to locate the nearest hospitals as well as the services they rendered.   With Google Earth, you'll be able to see math concepts in a different light.  They're worth exploring and understanding fully.  In Google Earth you'll be able to interact with the concepts and see how they're evident in real life.     Effect of culture on acceptance of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries: Case study of Jordan and Syria

    © Mary Ann Liebert, INC.We investigated issues that affect the use and adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries, taking the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Syrian Arab Republic as case studies. Our study is based on interviews with key stakeholders (including doctors, technicians, engineers, and decision makers) and questionnaires administered to key stakeholders (including patients), ensuring opinion was gained from people from a full range of backgrounds and roles in the healthcare system. We found doctor and patient resistance was a major issue preventing the adoption of telemedicine in both countries, followed by poor infrastructure, lack of funding, and lack of information technology training. Our research identifies that culture is a greater issue than technical matters for the adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries. Based on our preliminary results we developed a guideline framework for each country that might be applied to telemedicine projects at the pre-implementation phase. The proposed guideline framework was validated through a return visit to the stakeholders and seeking further opinion

    Designing and Developing Electronic Health System Using XML & RDM

    An examination of many hospitals that recently implemented in King Saudi Arabia(KSA) a little electronic health record (EHR) system finds that clinical and administrative leaders built EHR adoption into their strategic plans to integrate inpatient and outpatient care and pro­vide a continuum of coordinated services. Using Relational Data Base Management (RDM) and eXtend Marker Language (XML) Systems .Successful implementation depended on: strong leadership, full involvement of clinical staff in design and implementation, mandatory staff training, and strict adherence to timeline and budget. The EHR systems facilitate patient safety and quality improvement through: use of checklists, alerts, and predictive tools; embedded clinical guidelines that promote standardized, evidence-based practices; elec­tronic prescribing and test-ordering that reduces errors and redundancy; and discrete data fields that foster use of performance dashboards and compliance reports.
