    Digital Techniques for Documenting and Preserving Cultural Heritage

    In this unique collection the authors present a wide range of interdisciplinary methods to study, document, and conserve material cultural heritage. The methods used serve as exemplars of best practice with a wide variety of cultural heritage objects having been recorded, examined, and visualised. The objects range in date, scale, materials, and state of preservation and so pose different research questions and challenges for digitization, conservation, and ontological representation of knowledge. Heritage science and specialist digital technologies are presented in a way approachable to non-scientists, while a separate technical section provides details of methods and techniques, alongside examples of notable applications of spatial and spectral documentation of material cultural heritage, with selected literature and identification of future research.     Balancing Preservation and Interaction in the Museum Setting

    In this thesis the researcher documents the research, design, and evaluation process undertaken to answer the question - how does one balance interaction with and preservation of artifacts within the museum setting? Topics researched in pursuit of the answer to this question include material culture, theories of learning, and preservation. Material culture focuses on the interpretation of artifacts and aided the designer in developing the story each of Dolley Madison's artifacts told within the exhibit. The four theories of learning explored by the designer included stimulus-response, expository-didactic, discovery, and constructivist. These theories served as inspirations for developing an exhibit layout, with a focus on discovery and constructivist theories for the interactive experiences. Preservation theory coupled with knowledge of preservation needs of artifacts within museums assisted the researcher in developing safe environments to ensure the longevity of the artifacts. An evaluation process provided significant information to help assess the success of balancing interpretation and preservation needs. The compilation of this information provides a resource for those interested in learning about interactivity and preservation in the museum environment

    PotteryVR: virtual reality pottery

    Handcrafting ceramic pottery in the traditional method or virtual reality (VR) with intricate surface details is still challenging for the ceramic and graphic artist. Free-form pottery modeling can be efficiently geometrically modeled with the right tools with detailed 3D print outputs, yet challenging to be manufactured using traditional art. The new advanced pottery VR simulation is a promising method to recreate the traditional pottery simulation for a better experience with some barriers. The challenges that arise from surface detail in pottery are a tedious task accomplished by mesh blending and retopology. This paper focuses on refining the VP application’s performance by adding unique sound resonance as a more likely infinite geometric phenomenon textures, blending it into the basic shapes. This paper combines creativity and visual computing technologies such as VR, mesh blending, fixing errors, and 3D printing to bring the ceramic artist’s imagination to life. We have used sound resonance with virtual pottery (VP) systems refinements to demonstrate several standard pottery methods from free form deformed pottery, retopology, mesh blended for surface details, and 3D printed pottery with materials including polymer and ceramic resins

    Puzzle assembly’s importance lies into application in many areas such as restoration and reconstruction of archeological findings, the repairing of broken objects, solving of the jigsaw type puzzles, molecular docking problem, etc. Puzzle pieces usually include not only geometrical shape information but also visual information of texture, color, continuity of lines, and so on. Moreover, textural information is mainly used to assembly pieces in some cases, such as classic jigsaw puzzles. This research presents a new approach in that pictorial assembly, in contrast to previous curve matching methods, uses texture information as well as geometric shape. The assembly in this study is performed using textural features and geometrical constraints. First, the texture of a band outside the border of pieces is predicted by inpainting and texture synthesis methods. The feature values are derived by these original and predicted images of pieces. A combination of the feature and confidence values is used to generate an affinity measure of corresponding pieces. Two new algorithms using Fourier based image registration techniques are developed to optimize the affinity. The algorithms for inpainting, affinity and Fourier based assembly are explained with experimental results on real and artificial data. The main contributions of this research are: The development of a performance measure that indicates the level of success of assembly of pieces based on textural features and geometrical shape.     The Application of Machine Learning to At-Risk Cultural Heritage Image Data

    This project investigates the application of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) methods and technologies to problems related to At-Risk cultural heritage object recognition. The primary aim for this work is the use of developmental software combining the disciplines of computer vision and artefact studies, developing applications in the field of heritage protection specifically related to the illegal antiquities market. To accomplish this digital image data provided by the Durham University Oriental Museum was used in conjunction with several different implementations of pre-trained CNN software models, for the purposes of artefact Classification and Identification. Testing focused on data capture using a variety of digital recording devices, guided by the developmental needs of a heritage programme seeking to create software solutions to heritage threats in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Quantitative data results using information retrieval metrics is reported for all model and test sets, and has been used to evaluate the models predictive results
