Simulation of reaction-diffusion processes in three dimensions using CUDA
Numerical solution of reaction-diffusion equations in three dimensions is one
of the most challenging applied mathematical problems. Since these simulations
are very time consuming, any ideas and strategies aiming at the reduction of
CPU time are important topics of research. A general and robust idea is the
parallelization of source codes/programs. Recently, the technological
development of graphics hardware created a possibility to use desktop video
cards to solve numerically intensive problems. We present a powerful parallel
computing framework to solve reaction-diffusion equations numerically using the
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) with CUDA. Four different reaction-diffusion
problems, (i) diffusion of chemically inert compound, (ii) Turing pattern
formation, (iii) phase separation in the wake of a moving diffusion front and
(iv) air pollution dispersion were solved, and additionally both the Shared
method and the Moving Tiles method were tested. Our results show that parallel
implementation achieves typical acceleration values in the order of 5-40 times
compared to CPU using a single-threaded implementation on a 2.8 GHz desktop

Automated system for integration and display of physiological response data
The system analysis approach was applied in a study of physiological systems in both 1-g and weightlessness, for short and long term experiments. A whole body, algorithm developed as the first step in the construction of a total body simulation system is described and an advanced biomedical computer system concept including interactive display/command consoles is discussed. The documentation of the design specifications, design and development studies, and user's instructions (which include program listings) for these delivered end-terms; the reports on the results of many research and feasibility studies; and many subcontract reports are cited in the bibliography
Towards a cyber physical system for personalised and automatic OSA treatment
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder that takes place in the course of the sleep and is produced by a complete or a partial obstruction of the upper airway that manifests itself as frequent breathing stops and starts during the sleep. The real-time evaluation of whether or not a patient is undergoing OSA episode is a very important task in medicine in many scenarios, as for example for making instantaneous pressure adjustments that should take place when Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) devices are used during the treatment of OSA. In this paper the design of a possible Cyber Physical System (CPS) suited to real-time monitoring of OSA is described, and its software architecture and possible hardware sensing components are detailed. It should be emphasized here that this paper does not deal with a full CPS, rather with a software part of it under a set of assumptions on the environment. The paper also reports some preliminary experiments about the cognitive and learning capabilities of the designed CPS involving its use on a publicly available sleep apnea database

The therapeutic use of videogames within secure forensic settings: a review of the literature and application to practice
Engagement in leisure pursuits that involves the use of tools and objects and the exploration of a new environment can provide a success experience that leads to increased feelings of competence and mastery. Such experiences are considered important in the rehabilitation of forensic clients. The findings from videogame research within a general population are compared with those among mental health and forensic clients. Within the general population, videogames may provide opportunities for social interaction and the expression of creativity and humour as well as offering a graded approach to building computer skills. Within a forensic population, videogames have been found to be a normalising, age-appropriate and culturally appropriate activity, useful in engaging clients and improving self-concept and locus of control. The findings suggest that videogame play offers access to a safe virtual environment that encourages exploration and mastery and that it may be a useful therapeutic tool in secure settings where such opportunities are often limited. The use and potential contraindications of videogames within a forensic setting, the content of certain games and their possible influence on behaviour and the implications for future research are also discussed
