Fuzzy Logic in Clinical Practice Decision Support Systems

    Get PDF
Computerized clinical guidelines can provide significant benefits to health outcomes and costs, however, their effective implementation presents significant problems. Vagueness and ambiguity inherent in natural (textual) clinical guidelines is not readily amenable to formulating automated alerts or advice. Fuzzy logic allows us to formalize the treatment of vagueness in a decision support architecture. This paper discusses sources of fuzziness in clinical practice guidelines. We consider how fuzzy logic can be applied and give a set of heuristics for the clinical guideline knowledge engineer for addressing uncertainty in practice guidelines. We describe the specific applicability of fuzzy logic to the decision support behavior of Care Plan On-Line, an intranet-based chronic care planning system for General Practitioners

Eliciting Expert Knowledge for Fuzzy Evaluation of Agricultural Production Systems

Public concern nowadays is an important frame of reference for thedevelopment of agricultural production systems. The development ofsuch systems, therefore, involves both society level and productionsystem level. Following Zadeh's principle of incompatibility, information obtained at production system level is interpreted atsociety level in linguistic terms. Fuzzy models promise to be avaluable tool as they link measurable information to linguisticinterpretation using membership functions. The objective of this paperis to outline a procedure which deals with criticism regarding theinherent subjectivity in the construction of membership functions whenusing expert knowledge. The procedure guarantees the selection ofappropriate expert knowledge, and provides a guideline supporting theselection of methods to elicit expert knowledge and constructmembership functions. Also on the basis of the results in anillustrative example, it is concluded that the procedure outlined inthis paper suitably deals with criticism regarding membershipfunctions and, therefore, enables a practical implementation of fuzzyevaluation of agricultural production systems. Current researchimplements the procedure to build a fuzzy model which evaluates eggproduction systems in relation to public concern about the welfare oflaying hens.evaluation;subjectivity;expert knowledge;fuzzy models;knowledge elicitation

Combining quantifications for flexible query result ranking

    Get PDF
Databases contain data and database systems governing such databases are often intended to allow a user to query these data. On one hand, these data may be subject to imperfections, on the other hand, users may employ imperfect query preference specifications to query such databases. All of these imperfections lead to each query answer being accompanied by a collection of quantifications indicating how well (part of) a group of data complies with (part of) the user's query. A fundamental question is how to present the user with the query answers complying best to his or her query preferences. The work presented in this paper first determines the difficulties to overcome in reaching such presentation. Mainly, a useful presentation needs the ranking of the query answers based on the aforementioned quantifications, but it seems advisable to not combine quantifications with different interpretations. Thus, the work presented in this paper continues to introduce and examine a novel technique to determine a query answer ranking. Finally, a few aspects of this technique, among which its computational efficiency, are discussed

Concepts and Their Dynamics: A Quantum-Theoretic Modeling of Human Thought

We analyze different aspects of our quantum modeling approach of human concepts, and more specifically focus on the quantum effects of contextuality, interference, entanglement and emergence, illustrating how each of them makes its appearance in specific situations of the dynamics of human concepts and their combinations. We point out the relation of our approach, which is based on an ontology of a concept as an entity in a state changing under influence of a context, with the main traditional concept theories, i.e. prototype theory, exemplar theory and theory theory. We ponder about the question why quantum theory performs so well in its modeling of human concepts, and shed light on this question by analyzing the role of complex amplitudes, showing how they allow to describe interference in the statistics of measurement outcomes, while in the traditional theories statistics of outcomes originates in classical probability weights, without the possibility of interference. The relevance of complex numbers, the appearance of entanglement, and the role of Fock space in explaining contextual emergence, all as unique features of the quantum modeling, are explicitly revealed in this paper by analyzing human concepts and their dynamics.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure

Influence of the Tunnel Shape on Shotcrete Lining Stresses

Tunnel excavation is frequently carried out in rock masses by the drill and blast method and the final shape of the tunnel boundary can be irregular due to overbreaks. In order to investigate the effects of overbreaks a study of the effect of tunnel boundary irregularity has been carried out. This is done developing a computational tool able to take into account fuzzy variables (i.e., thickness of the beams of the bedded spring approach used for the model). The obtained results show that irregularity effects should be considered when a shotcrete lining is used as the final tunnel lining (for the case where the tunneling procedure does not permit a smooth surface to be obtained). This is crucial to obtain a durable linin
