Transforming failure into success through organisational learning: An analysis of a manufacturing information system
This paper describes the idiosyncracies of a case study company, through highlighting issues and problems
experienced during their attempts to evaluate, implement and realise the holistic implications of a manufacturing
information system. Although the Information System (IS) was operational for a period of time, it
was eventually deemed a failure. The reason for this was that a range of human and organisational factors
prevented the organisation from embracing the full impact of the system. The eventual success of their
information system was realised through a bespoke implementation, based upon a traditional systems development
lifecycle that indirectly addressed learning issues following the earlier failed deployment. The
paper highlights key issues relating to business success and failure, and then contrasts them alongside the
presented case study. In doing so, the authors conclude by proposing methods through which manufacturing
information systems can be transformed for business success. This is described achievable through both a
realisation in the positioning of the organisation relative to technology management, and the related mapping
of human and technological constructs that support information systems related succes

Exploring fuzzy cognitive mapping for IS evaluation: A research note
Existing IS Evaluation (ISE) techniques tend to focus on modeling individuals, teams, organization, or systems, in relation to process and environmental boundaries. Whilst such approaches are noteworthy and of merit, they do not necessarily provide insights into those causal interdependencies that are inherent within decision-making task. As has been noted by the extant literature in the field, the ISE task is dependent upon many factors – the resulting outputs of which may be tangible or intangible. The implicit level of uncertainty associated with modeling such decision-making tasks and behaviors, are therefore difficult to comprehend and impart via wholly Quantitative and / or Qualitative analyses. The authors therefore present and propose supporting and on-going research into the application of Fuzzy Logic, in the guise of Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) simulations, as a means to model tangible/intangible aspects of the ISE decision-making task. Such a Fuzzy Information Systems Evaluation (F-ISE) is shown via the application of the FCM technique, in terms of three models of investment appraisal that are aligned to an ISE task within a UK manufacturing organization. In doing so, it is anticipated that such a technique may be a useful addition to the plethora of ISE techniques available to both researcher and practitioner alike
New Trends in Development of Services in the Modern Economy
The services sector strategic development unites a multitude of economic and managerial aspects and is one of the most important problems of economic management. Many researches devoted to this industry study are available. Most of them are performed in the traditional aspect of the voluminous calendar approach to strategic management, characteristic of the national scientific school. Such an approach seems archaic, forming false strategic benchmarks.
The services sector is of special scientific interest in this context due to the fact that the social production structure to the services development model attraction in many countries suggests transition to postindustrial economy type where the services sector is a system-supporting sector of the economy. Actively influencing the economy, the services sector in the developed countries dominates in the GDP formation, primary capital accumulation, labor, households final consumption and, finally, citizens comfort of living.
However, a clear understanding of the services sector as a hyper-sector permeating all spheres of human activity has not yet been fully developed, although interest in this issue continues to grow among many authors.

Applying concepts of fuzzy cognitive mapping to model IT/IS investment evaluation factors
The justification process is a major concern for many organisations that are considering the adoption of Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS), and is a barrier to its implementation. As a result, the competitive advantage of many companies is being put at risk because of management's inability to evaluate the holistic implication of adopting new technology, both in terms of on the benefit and cost portfolios. This paper identifies a number of well-known project appraisal techniques used in IT/IS investment justification. Furthermore, the concept of multivalent, or fuzzy logic, is used to demonstrate how inter-relationships can be modeled between key dimensions identified in the proposed conceptual evaluation model. This is highlighted using fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) as a technique to model each IT/IS evaluation factor (integrating strategic, tactical, operational and investment considerations). The use of an FCM is then shown to be as a complementary tool which can serve to highlight interdependencies between contributory justification factors

The Evaluation of Business Intelligence: A Case Study in a Major Financial Institution
Business intelligence (BI) is the current industry movement that addresses the use of IT to support management decision making. Unlike previous approaches to decision support, BI systems are large-scale information systems. Whereas the development of small-scale personal decision support systems (PDSS) and executive information systems (EIS) may be authorised and funded at an individual executive’s discretion, BI systems require evaluation and approval processes more like those used in large-scale operational IT projects. This paper presents a framework for BI and proposes that Symon’s Context-Content-Process model is useful for understanding BI projects. A pilot case study of BI evaluation in a major bank is described and analysed in terms of the Context-Content-Process model. The findings include the recognition of the importance of non- financial intangible factors in BI evaluation, the use of operational justification for strategic BI systems, and the varying perspectives of different stakeholders in BI systems. The framework and case findings provide part of the foundation for a larger project concerning the development of a BI evaluation method
The role of high-performance people management practices in Industry 4.0: The case of medium-sized Spanish firms
Purpose: This paper wants to build the case for the key role of high-performance people management
practices in the development of I4.0 in SMEs. The research upon which this paper is based wants to
prove that the consolidation of those practices should be a priority for any company willing to embark
in this journey. The paper deals specifically with medium-sized Spanish firms which, on top, are already
having significant issues with digitization.
Design/methodology: The paper starts by digging into the literature to see how past technologies
have impacted productivity, followed by a review of the material available on digitization and Industry
4.0. It moves on to explore the relationship between people management practices, productivity and
innovation. Finally, the focus is placed on Spanish medium-sized companies, understanding their current
levels of consolidation of high-performance people management practices as well as digitization. With
all this information, several propositions are posited for validation using the Delphi methodology.
Findings: I4.0 is, at its core, about productivity improvements through business process and business
model innovation. People management practices are found to be strongly correlated with both
productivity and innovation. It has also been found that Spanish medium-sized firms already have a
significant initial gap compared to those of other OECD countries not only in productivity, but also
people management practices and digitization. The experts seem to agree on the key role of people
management practices and that they should be a high priority for any firm seriously thinking about
industry 4.0. This is not to say that strategy or leadership will not play a paramount role in any digital
transformation, but to emphasize the fact that the normally-forgotten people management practices will
be important enablers in this process.
Originality/value: It is believed that this is a topic that has been mostly neglected in the I4.0 literature.
In that sense, the findings of this paper could be relevant for small and medium-sized businesses
embarking on the industry 4.0 journey. This will entail a significant investment of time and money and,
if the key role of people management practices is not on the radar screen, it may have significant

A Survey on Economic-driven Evaluations of Information Technology
The economic-driven evaluation of information technology (IT) has become an important instrument in the management of IT projects. Numerous approaches have been developed to quantify the costs of an IT investment and its assumed profit, to evaluate its impact on business process performance, and to analyze the role of IT regarding the achievement of enterprise objectives. This paper discusses approaches for evaluating IT from an economic-driven perspective. Our comparison is based on a framework distinguishing between classification criteria and evaluation criteria. The former allow for the categorization of evaluation approaches based on their similarities and differences. The latter, by contrast, represent attributes that allow to evaluate the discussed approaches. Finally, we give an example of a typical economic-driven IT evaluation
