    Automatic generation of software interfaces for supporting decisionmaking processes. An application of domain engineering & machine learning

    [EN] Data analysis is a key process to foster knowledge generation in particular domains or fields of study. With a strong informative foundation derived from the analysis of collected data, decision-makers can make strategic choices with the aim of obtaining valuable benefits in their specific areas of action. However, given the steady growth of data volumes, data analysis needs to rely on powerful tools to enable knowledge extraction. Information dashboards offer a software solution to analyze large volumes of data visually to identify patterns and relations and make decisions according to the presented information. But decision-makers may have different goals and, consequently, different necessities regarding their dashboards. Moreover, the variety of data sources, structures, and domains can hamper the design and implementation of these tools. This Ph.D. Thesis tackles the challenge of improving the development process of information dashboards and data visualizations while enhancing their quality and features in terms of personalization, usability, and flexibility, among others. Several research activities have been carried out to support this thesis. First, a systematic literature mapping and review was performed to analyze different methodologies and solutions related to the automatic generation of tailored information dashboards. The outcomes of the review led to the selection of a modeldriven approach in combination with the software product line paradigm to deal with the automatic generation of information dashboards. In this context, a meta-model was developed following a domain engineering approach. This meta-model represents the skeleton of information dashboards and data visualizations through the abstraction of their components and features and has been the backbone of the subsequent generative pipeline of these tools. The meta-model and generative pipeline have been tested through their integration in different scenarios, both theoretical and practical. Regarding the theoretical dimension of the research, the meta-model has been successfully integrated with other meta-model to support knowledge generation in learning ecosystems, and as a framework to conceptualize and instantiate information dashboards in different domains. In terms of the practical applications, the focus has been put on how to transform the meta-model into an instance adapted to a specific context, and how to finally transform this later model into code, i.e., the final, functional product. These practical scenarios involved the automatic generation of dashboards in the context of a Ph.D. Programme, the application of Artificial Intelligence algorithms in the process, and the development of a graphical instantiation platform that combines the meta-model and the generative pipeline into a visual generation system. Finally, different case studies have been conducted in the employment and employability, health, and education domains. The number of applications of the meta-model in theoretical and practical dimensions and domains is also a result itself. Every outcome associated to this thesis is driven by the dashboard meta-model, which also proves its versatility and flexibility when it comes to conceptualize, generate, and capture knowledge related to dashboards and data visualizations

    Robust Estimation of Motion Parameters and Scene Geometry : Minimal Solvers and Convexification of Regularisers for Low-Rank Approximation

    In the dawning age of autonomous driving, accurate and robust tracking of vehicles is a quintessential part. This is inextricably linked with the problem of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM), in which one tries to determine the position of a vehicle relative to its surroundings without prior knowledge of them. The more you know about the object you wish to track—through sensors or mechanical construction—the more likely you are to get good positioning estimates. In the first part of this thesis, we explore new ways of improving positioning for vehicles travelling on a planar surface. This is done in several different ways: first, we generalise the work done for monocular vision to include two cameras, we propose ways of speeding up the estimation time with polynomial solvers, and we develop an auto-calibration method to cope with radially distorted images, without enforcing pre-calibration procedures.We continue to investigate the case of constrained motion—this time using auxiliary data from inertial measurement units (IMUs) to improve positioning of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The proposed methods improve the state-of-the-art for partially calibrated cases (with unknown focal length) for indoor navigation. Furthermore, we propose the first-ever real-time compatible minimal solver for simultaneous estimation of radial distortion profile, focal length, and motion parameters while utilising the IMU data.In the third and final part of this thesis, we develop a bilinear framework for low-rank regularisation, with global optimality guarantees under certain conditions. We also show equivalence between the linear and the bilinear framework, in the sense that the objectives are equal. This enables users of alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)—or other subgradient or splitting methods—to transition to the new framework, while being able to enjoy the benefits of second order methods. Furthermore, we propose a novel regulariser fusing two popular methods. This way we are able to combine the best of two worlds by encouraging bias reduction while enforcing low-rank solutions

    3D Visualisation - An Application and Assessment for Computer Network Traffic Analysis

    The intent of this research is to develop and assess the application of 3D data visualisation to the field of computer security. The growth of available data relating to computer networks necessitates a more efficient and effective way of presenting information to analysts in support of decision making and situational awareness. Advances in computer hardware and display software have made more complex and interactive presentation of data in 3D possible. While many attempts at creation of data-rich 3D displays have been made in the field of computer security, they have not become the tool of choice in the industry. There is also a limited amount of published research in the assessment of these tools in comparison to 2D graphical and tabular approaches to displaying the same data. This research was conducted through creation of a novel abstraction framework for visualisation of computer network data, the Visual Interactive Network Analysis Framework (VINAF). This framework was implemented in software and the software prototype was assessed using both a procedural approach applied to a published forensics challenge and also through a human participant based experiment. The key contributions to the fields of computer security and data visualisation made by this research include the creation of a novel abstraction framework for computer network traffic which features several new visualisation approaches. An implementation of this software was developed for the specific cybersecurity related task of computer network traffic analysis and published under an open source license to the cybersecurity community. The research contributes a novel approach to human-based experimentation developed during the COVID-19 pandemic and also implemented a novel procedure-based testing approach to the assessment of the prototype data visualisation tool. Results of the research showed, through procedural experimentation, that the abstraction framework is effective for network forensics tasks and exhibited several advantages when compared to alternate approaches. The user participation experiment indicated that most of the participants deemed the abstraction framework to be effective in several task related to computer network traffic analysis. There was not a strong indication that it would be preferred over existing approaches utilised by the participants, however, it would likely be used to augment existing methods

    Image and Video Forensics

    Nowadays, images and videos have become the main modalities of information being exchanged in everyday life, and their pervasiveness has led the image forensics community to question their reliability, integrity, confidentiality, and security. Multimedia contents are generated in many different ways through the use of consumer electronics and high-quality digital imaging devices, such as smartphones, digital cameras, tablets, and wearable and IoT devices. The ever-increasing convenience of image acquisition has facilitated instant distribution and sharing of digital images on digital social platforms, determining a great amount of exchange data. Moreover, the pervasiveness of powerful image editing tools has allowed the manipulation of digital images for malicious or criminal ends, up to the creation of synthesized images and videos with the use of deep learning techniques. In response to these threats, the multimedia forensics community has produced major research efforts regarding the identification of the source and the detection of manipulation. In all cases (e.g., forensic investigations, fake news debunking, information warfare, and cyberattacks) where images and videos serve as critical evidence, forensic technologies that help to determine the origin, authenticity, and integrity of multimedia content can become essential tools. This book aims to collect a diverse and complementary set of articles that demonstrate new developments and applications in image and video forensics to tackle new and serious challenges to ensure media authenticity

    Cultural Heritage Storytelling, Engagement and Management in the Era of Big Data and the Semantic Web

    The current Special Issue launched with the aim of further enlightening important CH areas, inviting researchers to submit original/featured multidisciplinary research works related to heritage crowdsourcing, documentation, management, authoring, storytelling, and dissemination. Audience engagement is considered very important at both sites of the CH production–consumption chain (i.e., push and pull ends). At the same time, sustainability factors are placed at the center of the envisioned analysis. A total of eleven (11) contributions were finally published within this Special Issue, enlightening various aspects of contemporary heritage strategies placed in today’s ubiquitous society.     A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

    ICSEA 2022: the seventeenth international conference on software engineering advances

    The Seventeenth International Conference on Software Engineering Advances (ICSEA 2022), held between October 16th and October 20th, 2022, continued a series of events covering a broad spectrum of software-related topics. The conference covered fundamentals on designing, implementing, testing, validating and maintaining various kinds of software. Several tracks were proposed to treat the topics from theory to practice, in terms of methodologies, design, implementation, testing, use cases, tools, and lessons learned. The conference topics covered classical and advanced methodologies, open source, agile software, as well as software deployment and software economics and education. Other advanced aspects are related to on-time practical aspects, such as run-time vulnerability checking, rejuvenation process, updates partial or temporary feature deprecation, software deployment and configuration, and on-line software updates. These aspects trigger implications related to patenting, licensing, engineering education, new ways for software adoption and improvement, and ultimately, to software knowledge management. There are many advanced applications requiring robust, safe, and secure software: disaster recovery applications, vehicular systems, biomedical-related software, biometrics related software, mission critical software, E-health related software, crisis-situation software. These applications require appropriate software engineering techniques, metrics and formalisms, such as, software reuse, appropriate software quality metrics, composition and integration, consistency checking, model checking, provers and reasoning. The nature of research in software varies slightly with the specific discipline researchers work in, yet there is much common ground and room for a sharing of best practice, frameworks, tools, languages and methodologies. Despite the number of experts we have available, little work is done at the meta level, that is examining how we go about our research, and how this process can be improved. There are questions related to the choice of programming language, IDEs and documentation styles and standard. Reuse can be of great benefit to research projects yet reuse of prior research projects introduces special problems that need to be mitigated. The research environment is a mix of creativity and systematic approach which leads to a creative tension that needs to be managed or at least monitored. Much of the coding in any university is undertaken by research students or young researchers. Issues of skills training, development and quality control can have significant effects on an entire department. In an industrial research setting, the environment is not quite that of industry as a whole, nor does it follow the pattern set by the university. The unique approaches and issues of industrial research may hold lessons for researchers in other domains. We take here the opportunity to warmly thank all the members of the ICSEA 2022 technical program committee, as well as all the reviewers. The creation of such a high-quality conference program would not have been possible without their involvement. We also kindly thank all the authors who dedicated much of their time and effort to contribute to ICSEA 2022. We truly believe that, thanks to all these efforts, the final conference program consisted of top-quality contributions. We also thank the members of the ICSEA 2022 organizing committee for their help in handling the logistics of this event. We hope that ICSEA 2022 was a successful international forum for the exchange of ideas and results between academia and industry and for the promotion of progress in software engineering advances

    The role of mobile AR in facilitating nursing independent learning : the student experience

    Augmented Reality (AR) is a new technology that creates virtual extra layers on a physical object. It allows bringing digital information into the real environment by blending those two worlds. Interacting with digital content is a unique AR feature that offers new learning opportunities integrated with mobile applications. Smartphone devices can be utilised as AR tools to support interactive learning. Previous research has reported multiple benefits of using mobile AR as a learning tool, including enhancing content understanding, improving long-term memory retention, and increasing student motivation. There are several potentials for utilising AR in the context of nursing education, such as promoting independent learning and facilitating a student-centred learning approach. Comparing to traditional education, the increased use of blended learning in healthcare and nursing education requires students to take more responsibility for their learning. Thus students' independent learning skills have become increasingly important. However, there is a lack of studies focusing on AR technology and independent learning. This research addresses this gap, aiming to investigate the feasibility of utilising AR technology to facilitate independent learning of nursing students while acquiring clinical skills. In this research, a design science research methodology was adopted, consisting of three phases. The first phase – problem identification – reviewed the literature and undertook an exploratory study. The literature revealed that the ability of AR to allow students to be immersed in a realistic experience has attracted educators to use this creative way of learning. Indicating the ability of AR to replace traditional teaching methods, it does this by encouraging self-directed learning between students and supporting student-centred learning (SCL). In SCL, the teacher’s role is as a facilitator who will enable students to learn independently and individually, while the learners are more responsible for their education. AR helps students to control their learning at their own pace and location. Moreover, the exploratory study investigated the current learning approach in terms of supporting independent learning, and 108 nursing students from The University of Salford answered an online questionnaire about their current learning. The results showed that the current learning environment is less supportive of independent learning due to many environmental obstacles, such as lack of feedback, accessibility issues, and lack of realism of manikins in clinical labs. The second phase – solution design – proposed a novel learning AR platform called Nursing Mobile Augmented Reality (NMAR), and the learning activities were designed based on self-regulated learning theory to overcome the current approach limitations. Learning with NMAR introduces a new learning strategy, aiming to enhance students’ independent learning by adding 16 interactive self-assessment. Utilising NMAR allows students the freedom to discover the solution independently and activate their learning. Lastly, the third phase – evaluation – included an experimental lab study, where the NMAR learning environment was deployed to create an overall positive user experience which might motivate the students to be independent learners. A novel NMAR platform to support nursing students was used individually by 34 students at The University of Salford, and both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from the students via questionnaires, screen recordings and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data were looked at the NMAR aspects, while the qualitative data explored the users’ thoughts and perceptions about their experiences with NMAR. Evaluating the platform, understanding the users’ perception and comparing the current and proposed learning approaches together provide a deeper insight into the comprehensive user experience. The quantitative findings showed statistically significant differences in perceived usefulness scores between the current and NMAR approaches. The qualitative findings confirmed that the NMAR platform facilitates the self-regulated learning process greater extent than does the current approach. Accordingly, the findings of this research revealed that the proposed NMAR learning approach positively enhanced the students’ learning experience while acquiring clinical skills. The results confirmed that AR has a positive role in facilitating independent learning. Thus the research findings are expected to help nursing educators and policymakers to understand the feasibility of adopting AR technology in facilitating independent learning to support nursing education inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, academia can use the proposed NMAR learning approach as relevant groundwork to initiate other related studies, which might help to fill the gap in the AR learning area
