    Irregularity-based image regions saliency identification and evaluation

The technique that is suitable in some application is not necessarily useful in other application, thus, saliency enhancement is application oriented. In this paper, a new technique of extracting the salient regions from an image is proposed which utilizes the local features of the surrounding region of the pixels. The level of saliency is then decided based on the global comparison of the saliency-enhanced image. To make the process fully automatic a new Fuzzy-Based thresholding technique has been proposed also. The paper contains a survey of the state-of-the-art methods of saliency evaluation and a new saliency evaluation technique was proposed

    Modeling of Facial Wrinkles for Applications in Computer Vision

    International audienceAnalysis and modeling of aging human faces have been extensively studied in the past decade for applications in computer vision such as age estimation, age progression and face recognition across aging. Most of this research work is based on facial appearance and facial features such as face shape, geometry, location of landmarks and patch-based texture features. Despite the recent availability of higher resolution, high quality facial images, we do not find much work on the image analysis of local facial features such as wrinkles specifically. For the most part, modeling of facial skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles has been a focus in computer graphics research for photo-realistic rendering applications. In computer vision, very few aging related applications focus on such facial features. Where several survey papers can be found on facial aging analysis in computer vision, this chapter focuses specifically on the analysis of facial wrinkles in the context of several applications. Facial wrinkles can be categorized as subtle discontinuities or cracks in surrounding inhomogeneous skin texture and pose challenges to being detected/localized in images. First, we review commonly used image features to capture the intensity gradients caused by facial wrinkles and then present research in modeling and analysis of facial wrinkles as aging texture or curvilinear objects for different applications. The reviewed applications include localization or detection of wrinkles in facial images , incorporation of wrinkles for more realistic age progression, analysis for age estimation and inpainting/removal of wrinkles for facial retouching

    Text and images are the two most common data modalities found on the Internet. Understanding the synergy between text and images, that is, seamlessly analyzing information from these modalities may be trivial for humans, but is challenging for software systems. In this dissertation we study problems where deciphering text-image synergy is crucial for finding solutions. We propose methods and ideas that establish semantic connections between text and images in multimodal contents, and empirically show their effectiveness in four interconnected problems: Image Retrieval, Image Tag Refinement, Image-Text Alignment, and Image Captioning. Während es für Menschen einfach ist, gerade aus dem Zusammenspiel von Text- und Bildinhalten Informationen zu erfassen, stellt diese kombinierte Darstellung von Inhalten Softwaresysteme vor große Herausforderungen. In dieser Dissertation werden Probleme studiert, für deren Lösung das Verständnis des Zusammenspiels von Text- und Bildinhalten wesentlich ist. Es werden Methoden und Vorschläge präsentiert und empirisch bewertet, die semantische Verbindungen zwischen Text und Bild in multimodalen Daten herstellen. Wir stellen in dieser Dissertation vier miteinander verbundene Text- und Bildprobleme vor: • Bildersuche. Ob Bilder anhand von textbasierten Suchanfragen gefunden werden, hängt stark davon ab, ob der Text in der Nähe des Bildes mit dem der Anfrage übereinstimmt. Bilder ohne textuellen Kontext, oder sogar mit thematisch passendem Kontext, aber ohne direkte Übereinstimmungen der vorhandenen Schlagworte zur Suchanfrage, können häufig nicht gefunden werden. Zur Abhilfe schlagen wir vor, drei Arten von Informationen in Kombination zu nutzen: visuelle Informationen (in Form von automatisch generierten Bildbeschreibungen), textuelle Informationen (Stichworte aus vorangegangenen Suchanfragen), und Alltagswissen. • Verbesserte Bildbeschreibungen. Bei der Objekterkennung durch Computer Vision kommt es des Öfteren zu Fehldetektionen und Inkohärenzen. Die korrekte Identifikation von Bildinhalten ist jedoch eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die Suche nach Bildern mittels textueller Suchanfragen. Um die Fehleranfälligkeit bei der Objekterkennung zu minimieren, schlagen wir vor Alltagswissen einzubeziehen. Durch zusätzliche Bild-Annotationen, welche sich durch den gesunden Menschenverstand als thematisch passend erweisen, können viele fehlerhafte und zusammenhanglose Erkennungen vermieden werden. • Bild-Text Platzierung. Auf Internetseiten mit Text- und Bildinhalten (wie Nachrichtenseiten, Blogbeiträge, Artikel in sozialen Medien) werden Bilder in der Regel an semantisch sinnvollen Positionen im Textfluss platziert. Wir nutzen dies um ein Framework vorzuschlagen, in dem relevante Bilder ausgesucht werden und mit den passenden Abschnitten eines Textes assoziiert werden. • Bildunterschriften. Bilder, die als Teil von multimodalen Inhalten zur Verbesserung der Lesbarkeit von Texten dienen, haben typischerweise Bildunterschriften, die zum Kontext des umgebenden Texts passen. Wir schlagen vor, den Kontext beim automatischen Generieren von Bildunterschriften ebenfalls einzubeziehen. Üblicherweise werden hierfür die Bilder allein analysiert. Wir stellen die kontextbezogene Bildunterschriftengenerierung vor. Unsere vielversprechenden Beobachtungen und Ergebnisse eröffnen interessante Möglichkeiten für weitergehende Forschung zur computergestützten Erfassung des Zusammenspiels von Text- und Bildinhalten

    Exploiting Structural Regularities and Beyond: Vision-based Localization and Mapping in Man-Made Environments

    Image-based estimation of camera motion, known as visual odometry (VO), plays a very important role in many robotic applications such as control and navigation of unmanned mobile robots, especially when no external navigation reference signal is available. The core problem of VO is the estimation of the camera’s ego-motion (i.e. tracking) either between successive frames, namely relative pose estimation, or with respect to a global map, namely absolute pose estimation. This thesis aims to develop efficient, accurate and robust VO solutions by taking advantage of structural regularities in man-made environments, such as piece-wise planar structures, Manhattan World and more generally, contours and edges. Furthermore, to handle challenging scenarios that are beyond the limits of classical sensor based VO solutions, we investigate a recently emerging sensor — the event camera and study on event-based mapping — one of the key problems in the event-based VO/SLAM. The main achievements are summarized as follows. First, we revisit an old topic on relative pose estimation: accurately and robustly estimating the fundamental matrix given a collection of independently estimated homograhies. Three classical methods are reviewed and then we show a simple but nontrivial two-step normalization within the direct linear method that achieves similar performance to the less attractive and more computationally intensive hallucinated points based method. Second, an efficient 3D rotation estimation algorithm for depth cameras in piece-wise planar environments is presented. It shows that by using surface normal vectors as an input, planar modes in the corresponding density distribution function can be discovered and continuously tracked using efficient non-parametric estimation techniques. The relative rotation can be estimated by registering entire bundles of planar modes by using robust L1-norm minimization. Third, an efficient alternative to the iterative closest point algorithm for real-time tracking of modern depth cameras in ManhattanWorlds is developed. We exploit the common orthogonal structure of man-made environments in order to decouple the estimation of the rotation and the three degrees of freedom of the translation. The derived camera orientation is absolute and thus free of long-term drift, which in turn benefits the accuracy of the translation estimation as well. Fourth, we look into a more general structural regularity—edges. A real-time VO system that uses Canny edges is proposed for RGB-D cameras. Two novel alternatives to classical distance transforms are developed with great properties that significantly improve the classical Euclidean distance field based methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy and robustness. Finally, to deal with challenging scenarios that go beyond what standard RGB/RGB-D cameras can handle, we investigate the recently emerging event camera and focus on the problem of 3D reconstruction from data captured by a stereo event-camera rig moving in a static scene, such as in the context of stereo Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

    Deliverable D1.1 State of the art and requirements analysis for hypervideo

    This deliverable presents a state-of-art and requirements analysis report for hypervideo authored as part of the WP1 of the LinkedTV project. Initially, we present some use-case (viewers) scenarios in the LinkedTV project and through the analysis of the distinctive needs and demands of each scenario we point out the technical requirements from a user-side perspective. Subsequently we study methods for the automatic and semi-automatic decomposition of the audiovisual content in order to effectively support the annotation process. Considering that the multimedia content comprises of different types of information, i.e., visual, textual and audio, we report various methods for the analysis of these three different streams. Finally we present various annotation tools which could integrate the developed analysis results so as to effectively support users (video producers) in the semi-automatic linking of hypervideo content, and based on them we report on the initial progress in building the LinkedTV annotation tool. For each one of the different classes of techniques being discussed in the deliverable we present the evaluation results from the application of one such method of the literature to a dataset well-suited to the needs of the LinkedTV project, and we indicate the future technical requirements that should be addressed in order to achieve higher levels of performance (e.g., in terms of accuracy and time-efficiency), as necessary

    A New Approach to Automatic Saliency Identification in Images Based on Irregularity of Regions

    This research introduces an image retrieval system which is, in different ways, inspired by the human vision system. The main problems with existing machine vision systems and image understanding are studied and identified, in order to design a system that relies on human image understanding. The main improvement of the developed system is that it uses the human attention principles in the process of image contents identification. Human attention shall be represented by saliency extraction algorithms, which extract the salient regions or in other words, the regions of interest. This work presents a new approach for the saliency identification which relies on the irregularity of the region. Irregularity is clearly defined and measuring tools developed. These measures are derived from the formality and variation of the region with respect to the surrounding regions. Both local and global saliency have been studied and appropriate algorithms were developed based on the local and global irregularity defined in this work. The need for suitable automatic clustering techniques motivate us to study the available clustering techniques and to development of a technique that is suitable for salient points clustering. Based on the fact that humans usually look at the surrounding region of the gaze point, an agglomerative clustering technique is developed utilising the principles of blobs extraction and intersection. Automatic thresholding was needed in different stages of the system development. Therefore, a Fuzzy thresholding technique was developed. Evaluation methods of saliency region extraction have been studied and analysed; subsequently we have developed evaluation techniques based on the extracted regions (or points) and compared them with the ground truth data. The proposed algorithms were tested against standard datasets and compared with the existing state-of-the-art algorithms. Both quantitative and qualitative benchmarking are presented in this thesis and a detailed discussion for the results has been included. The benchmarking showed promising results in different algorithms. The developed algorithms have been utilised in designing an integrated saliency-based image retrieval system which uses the salient regions to give a description for the scene. The system auto-labels the objects in the image by identifying the salient objects and gives labels based on the knowledge database contents. In addition, the system identifies the unimportant part of the image (background) to give a full description for the scene
