    We believe that economic design and computational complexity---while already important to each other---should become even more important to each other with each passing year. But for that to happen, experts in on the one hand such areas as social choice, economics, and political science and on the other hand computational complexity will have to better understand each other's worldviews. This article, written by two complexity theorists who also work in computational social choice theory, focuses on one direction of that process by presenting a brief overview of how most computational complexity theorists view the world. Although our immediate motivation is to make the lens through which complexity theorists see the world be better understood by those in the social sciences, we also feel that even within computer science it is very important for nontheoreticians to understand how theoreticians think, just as it is equally important within computer science for theoreticians to understand how nontheoreticians think

    There is an on-going debate in the literature on theoretical underpinnings of distance learning. Scholars consider different theoretical perspectives including but not limited to theory of independence and autonomy, theory of industrialization, and theory of interaction and communication through the lens of a traditional Learning Theory approach. There is a lack of discussion on a potential role of a newly emerging field of Learning Sciences in framing the theory of distance learning. Thus, in this paper we provide a theoretical analysis of the Learning Sciences as a new approach to understand distance learning in the era of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Learning Sciences is an interdisciplinary field that studies teaching and learning. This emerging innovative field includes but is not limited to multiple disciplines such as cognitive science, educational psychology, anthropology, computer science, to name a few.     A Scientometric Analysis of Scientific Publications related to COVID-19 in Library and Information Science Research

    Purpose: As part of social sciences, Library and Information Science (LIS) has experienced development in COVID-19 discussions through the academic lens. The increasing number of research related to COVID-19 across subject areas is a response by researchers to overcome this crisis, including research in the LIS field. This research aims to describe the characteristics and trends of the keywords. It also aims to describe the most productive journals, institutions, and countries related to COVID-19 in LIS research. Methods: We analysed 250 documents related to “COVID-19” in LIS research area indexed in Scopus during 2020-2022. VOSviewer was used to analyse the thematic trends and hotspot of the literature. Results: Two hundred and fifty articles were found in 77 journals. The analysis showed that the COVID-19 publications have increased in around 30 months. In terms of the journal, Library Philosophy and Practice published articles in a significant number. Meanwhile, the University of South Africa is the most productive institution. The content analysis found 5 themes dealing with academic libraries (n=56), public libraries (=22), library services (n=18), digital libraries (=12), and social media (n=12). LIS is an interdisciplinary field that has been dealing with various research areas such as social science, arts and humanities, and computer sciences. Conclusion: This study provides an overview of trends based on the most popular keywords. The results provide further information for both LIS researchers and other researchers in other areas. Future research should discuss the trend of combining non-LIS area

    Mode Transforming Properties of Tapered Single-Mode Fiber Microlenses

    The Gaussian approximation that is typically used to estimate single-mode fiber microlens performance is investigated. It is applied to hemispheric lenses on two types of tapered single-mode fiber. Theoretical and experimental results are compared. The first type of taper, which is fabricated by pulling a fiber while it is melted, has a tapered core and a tapered cladding. The second type of taper, which is fabricated by etching the cladding, has a tapered cladding only. For a tapered-core fiber, coupling to the cladding-guided modes and the finite radius of curvature of the wave front before the lens must be considered to predict the lens spot size accurately, whereas the spot size of a tapered-cladding lens can be predicted from the lens diameter alone. Thus the spot size of a lens on a tapered-cladding fiber is easier to predict and control than that of a lens on a tapered-core fiber. It is also shown that the usual theory used to predict the spot size gives accepted values for tapered-cladding lenses but not for tapered-core lenses

    The transformation of public space : mobile technology practices and urban liminalities

Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.Since the mid-twentieth century, various architectural, urban, cultural, and computer science discourses have advanced the rhetoric that contemporary information and communications technologies (ICTs) will fundamentally transform the built and urban environment. More recently, communications and media studies, as well as computer science allied fields such as human computer interaction (HCI) and interaction design have directed significant attention to the urban contexts in which mobile information and communications technologies (mICT) are used, and on the so-called transformative practices of mobile ‘location-awareness’. These diverse fields, that simultaneously attend to the topics of urbanism, space, and technology, bring alternate perspectives, methods, and theories to bear on the notion of urban transformation. Yet equally, they also contribute to a growing body of discourse that situates mobile technology practices as a force of radical and positive urban transformation. This thesis argues that understanding and representing the impacts of mobile technology practices on the aesthetic, symbolic, and lived experience of urban public space is a contestable territory subject to a range of technical, socio-economic, and cultural variables that are difficult to account for from any singular disciplinary perspective. Accordingly, this thesis adopts an interdisciplinary method that examines the selected discourse through the lens of liminal theory initially developed by anthropologist Victor Turner from observations of tribal ritual (1967, 1974a, 1974b, 1977a, 1977b, 1982, 1985)—a theory that has much to say on the concepts and processes of transformation. This constructs a unique critique of claims that mobile technology practices have transformed urban public space by unpacking and examining a number of underlying assumptions and ideals that connect to key conceptual frameworks as well as disciplinary biases. From this perspective, this thesis argues that while mobile technology practices have influenced urban conditions—in both a positive and negative sense—from social practices, and workplace organisation, to ways of moving, they can be alternately conceptualised as liminal triggers that invoke ambivalent representations of urban public space over its radical transformation. The discourse examined in this thesis points to a significant investment in research that attends to the interrelationships between emerging digital technologies and the built environment in the social, cultural, and computer sciences, whereas limited engagement from the architectural discipline. As a contribution to interdisciplinary thinking the value of this thesis to the architectural discipline lies in its presentation and critique of these alternate disciplinary perspectives that have ‘made visible’ the often-abstract impacts of mobile technology practices on and within urban public space. With an eye to the current technourban imaginary and policy vehicle of the smart city, this thesis contends that from this more informed position the architectural discipline can offer much-needed critique on the relationships between emerging technologies and the built environment. The corollary of engaging and adapting a liminal theoretical gaze here is the problematisation of liminal space itself, and a further contribution to its history and methodological range
