    Water Distribution System Computer-Aided Design by Agent Swarm Optimization

    Optimal design of water distribution systems (WDS), including the sizing of components, quality control, reliability, renewal and rehabilitation strategies, etc., is a complex problem in water engineering that requires robust methods of optimization. Classical methods of optimization are not well suited for analyzing highly-dimensional, multimodal, non-linear problems, especially given inaccurate, noisy, discrete and complex data. Agent Swarm Optimization (ASO) is a novel paradigm that exploits swarm intelligence and borrows some ideas from multiagent based systems. It is aimed at supporting decisionmaking processes by solving multi-objective optimization problems. ASO offers robustness through a framework where various population-based algorithms co-exist. The ASO framework is described and used to solve the optimal design of WDS. The approach allows engineers to work in parallel with the computational algorithms to force the recruitment of new searching elements, thus contributing to the solution process with expert-based proposals.This work has been developed with the support of the project IDAWAS, DPI2009-11591, of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, and ACOMP/2010/146 of the education department of the Generalitat Valenciana.     Agent collaboration in a multi-agent-system for analysis and optimization of mechanical engineering parts

    In mechanical engineering, designers have to review a designed artefact iteratively with different domain experts, e.g. from manufacturing, to avoid later changes and find a robust, optimized design. To support the designer, knowledge-based engineering offers a set of approaches and techniques that formalize and implement engineering knowledge into generic product models or decision support systems. An implementation which satisfies especially the concurrent nature of today's design processes and allow for multi-objective decision-making is multi-agent systems. Such systems consist of entities that are capable of autonomous action, interact intelligently with their environment, communicate and collaborate. In this paper, such a multi-agent system is discussed as extension for a computer-aided design software where the agents take the role of domain experts, like e.g. manufacturing technologists and make suggestions for the optimization of the design of mechanical engineering parts. A focal point is set on the collaboration concept of the single agents.     Mesterséges intelligencia folyamatmérnöki alkalmazásai területén folytattunk kutatást az alábbi résztémákban: 1. Folyamatrendszerek számítógéppel segített modellezése Formális módszereket dolgoztunk ki folyamatrendszerek modelljeinek felállítására, ellenőrzésére és egyszerűsítésére. A folyamatrendszereket jellemző teljesítmény- és méret-indexek definiálásával feltételeket fogalmaztunk meg minimális modellek meghatározására. 2. Folyamatmodell ontológiák létrehozása Vizsgálatokat folytattunk folyamatrendszerek meghibásodásainak és az ezeket kiváltó berendezésekhez, emberekhez és eljárásokhoz kapcsolódó tényezők közötti összefüggések leírására, amelyeket formálisan ontológiák segítségével fogalmaztuk meg. 3. Predikció-alapú diagnosztika többléptékű (multi-scale) modellek alkalmazásával Predikció-alapuló intelligens diagnosztikai rendszert dolgoztunk ki, amely egységes környezetben kezeli a mérnöki modelleket és a heurisztikus információkat. A többléptékű modell alkalmazásával lehetőség nyílt automatikus fókuszálásra a hibadetektálási és veszteség?megelőzési feladatokban. 4. Multi-ágens alapú diagnosztikai rendszer fejlesztése Kidolgoztunk egy hibadetektálási, predikció-alapú diagnosztikai és veszteség-megőrzési feladatokat együttesen megvalósító multi-ágens alapú diagnosztikai rendszert. A folyamat-specifikus és a diagnosztikai ismereteket moduláris ontológiák formájában reprezentáltuk, ezeket integráltuk a kifejlesztett multi-ágens rendszerbe. | Artificial intelligence methods in process systems engineering has been investigated as follows: 1. Computer aided process modelling Formal methods are developed for construction, investigation and simplification of process models. Based on the notion of performance and size indices conditions are proposed for developing minimal models. 2. Generating ontology for process models The abnormal conditions of process system and their relation to the plant, people and procedures has been investigated and formalised with ontology. 3. Prediction-based diagnosis using multi-scale models A prototype prediction-based intelligent diagnostic system is developed that is capable integrating process models and operation experiences. The multi-scale model approach supports focusing in case of fault detection and loss prevention. 4. Multi-agent based diagnostic system A multi-agent diagnostic system is developed using of combination of diagnostic methods from heterogeneous knowledge sources. The process specific and diagnostic information are represented as ontology and they are integrated to the multi-agent system

    Learning-based ship design optimization approach

    With the development of computer applications in ship design, optimization, as a powerful approach, has been widely used in the design and analysis process. However, the running time, which often varies from several weeks to months in the current computing environment, has been a bottleneck problem for optimization applications, particularly in the structural design of ships. To speed up the optimization process and adjust the complex design environment, ship designers usually rely on their personal experience to assist the design work. However, traditional experience, which largely depends on the designer’s personal skills, often makes the design quality very sensitive to the experience and decreases the robustness of the final design. This paper proposes a new machine-learning-based ship design optimization approach, which uses machine learning as an effective tool to give direction to optimization and improves the adaptability of optimization to the dynamic design environment. The natural human learning process is introduced into the optimization procedure to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Q-learning, as an approach of reinforcement learning, is utilized to realize the learning function in the optimization process. The multi-objective particle swarm optimization method, multiagent system, and CAE software are used to build an integrated optimization system. A bulk carrier structural design optimization was performed as a case study to evaluate the suitability of this method for real-world application

    VELOS : a VR platform for ship-evacuation analysis

    Virtual Environment for Life On Ships (VELOS) is a multi-user Virtual Reality (VR) system that aims to support designers to assess (early in the design process) passenger and crew activities on a ship for both normal and hectic conditions of operations and to improve ship design accordingly. This article focuses on presenting the novel features of VELOS related to both its VR and evacuation-specific functionalities. These features include: (i) capability of multiple users’ immersion and active participation in the evacuation process, (ii) real-time interactivity and capability for making on-the-fly alterations of environment events and crowd-behavior parameters, (iii) capability of agents and avatars to move continuously on decks, (iv) integrated framework for both the simplified and advanced method of analysis according to the IMO/MSC 1033 Circular, (v) enrichment of the ship geometrical model with a topological model suitable for evacuation analysis, (vi) efficient interfaces for the dynamic specification and handling of the required heterogeneous input data, and (vii) post-processing of the calculated agent trajectories for extracting useful information for the evacuation process.     Multi-agent evolutionary systems for the generation of complex virtual worlds

    Modern films, games and virtual reality applications are dependent on convincing computer graphics. Highly complex models are a requirement for the successful delivery of many scenes and environments. While workflows such as rendering, compositing and animation have been streamlined to accommodate increasing demands, modelling complex models is still a laborious task. This paper introduces the computational benefits of an Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) to computer graphics modelling while compensating the effects of user fatigue, a common issue with Interactive Evolutionary Computation. An intelligent agent is used in conjunction with an IGA that offers the potential to reduce the effects of user fatigue by learning from the choices made by the human designer and directing the search accordingly. This workflow accelerates the layout and distribution of basic elements to form complex models. It captures the designer's intent through interaction, and encourages playful discovery

For example, an oracle able to predict a certain application\u27s behavior running on a smart phone could direct the power manager to switch to appropriate dynamic voltage and frequency scaling modes that would guarantee minimum levels of desired performance while saving energy consumption and thereby prolonging battery life. Using predictions enables systems to become proactive rather than continue to operate in a reactive manner. This prediction-based proactive approach has become increasingly popular in the design and optimization of integrated circuits and of multicore processor systems. Prediction transforms from simple forecasting to sophisticated machine learning based prediction and classification that learns from existing data, employs data mining, and predicts future behavior. This can be exploited by novel optimization techniques that can span across all layers of the computing stack. In this survey paper, we present a discussion of the most popular techniques on prediction and classification in the general context of computing systems with emphasis on multicore processors. The paper is far from comprehensive, but, it will help the reader interested in employing prediction in optimization of multicore processor systems

    AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends

    The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques.
