    Probabilistic and fuzzy reasoning in simple learning classifier systems

    This paper is concerned with the general stimulus-response problem as addressed by a variety of simple learning c1assifier systems (CSs). We suggest a theoretical model from which the assessment of uncertainty emerges as primary concern. A number of representation schemes borrowing from fuzzy logic theory are reviewed, and sorne connections with a well-known neural architecture revisited. In pursuit of the uncertainty measuring goal, usage of explicit probability distributions in the action part of c1assifiers is advocated. Sorne ideas supporting the design of a hybrid system incorpo'rating bayesian learning on top of the CS basic algorithm are sketched

    Uncertainty modeling in real-life applications comprises some serious problems such as the curse of dimensionality and a lack of sufficient amount of statistical data. In this paper we give a survey of methods for uncertainty handling and elaborate the latest progress towards real-life applications with respect to the problems that come with it. We compare different methods and highlight their relationships. We introduce intuitively the concept of potential clouds, our latest approach which successfully copes with both higher dimensions and incomplete information

    A possibilistic framework for constraint-based metabolic flux analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Constraint-based models allow the calculation of the metabolic flux states that can be exhibited by cells, standing out as a powerful analytical tool, but they do not determine which of these are likely to be existing under given circumstances. Typical methods to perform these predictions are (a) flux balance analysis, which is based on the assumption that cell behaviour is optimal, and (b) metabolic flux analysis, which combines the model with experimental measurements.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Herein we discuss a possibilistic framework to perform metabolic flux estimations using a constraint-based model and a set of measurements. The methodology is able to handle inconsistencies, by considering sensors errors and model imprecision, to provide rich and reliable flux estimations. The methodology can be cast as linear programming problems, able to handle thousands of variables with efficiency, so it is suitable to deal with large-scale networks. Moreover, the possibilistic estimation does not attempt necessarily to predict the actual fluxes with precision, but rather to exploit the available data – even if those are scarce – to distinguish possible from impossible flux states in a gradual way.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We introduce a possibilistic framework for the estimation of metabolic fluxes, which is shown to be flexible, reliable, usable in scenarios lacking data and computationally efficient.</p

    An Evolutionary Learning Approach for Adaptive Negotiation Agents

    Developing effective and efficient negotiation mechanisms for real-world applications such as e-Business is challenging since negotiations in such a context are characterised by combinatorially complex negotiation spaces, tough deadlines, very limited information about the opponents, and volatile negotiator preferences. Accordingly, practical negotiation systems should be empowered by effective learning mechanisms to acquire dynamic domain knowledge from the possibly changing negotiation contexts. This paper illustrates our adaptive negotiation agents which are underpinned by robust evolutionary learning mechanisms to deal with complex and dynamic negotiation contexts. Our experimental results show that GA-based adaptive negotiation agents outperform a theoretically optimal negotiation mechanism which guarantees Pareto optimal. Our research work opens the door to the development of practical negotiation systems for real-world applications

    Non-linear predictive control for manufacturing and robotic applications

    The paper discusses predictive control algorithms in the context of applications to robotics and manufacturing systems. Special features of such systems, as compared to traditional process control applications, require that the algorithms are capable of dealing with faster dynamics, more significant unstabilities and more significant contribution of non-linearities to the system performance. The paper presents the general framework for state-space design of predictive algorithms. Linear algorithms are introduced first, then, the attention moves to non-linear systems. Methods of predictive control are presented which are based on the state-dependent state space system description. Those are illustrated on examples of rather difficult mechanical systems

    A fuzzy model and algorithm to handle subjectivity in life cycle costing based decision-making.

    A life cycle costing (LCC) algorithm that can effectively deal with judgmental assessments of input parameters is proposed. This algorithm is based on the fuzzy set theory and interval mathematics. The development of the algorithm is motivated by the need to handle in a systematic and a more objective way the imprecision in these subjective assessments. Three major issues were considered in the development of the algorithm. First, an appropriate mathematical framework for representing subjective imprecision was identified. Then, the original LCC closed-form equation was reformulated so that uncertainties in all input parameters can be modelled in an effective and convenient manner. Finally, the formulated model was implemented in the form of an efficient computational algorithm. The algorithm handles a number of alternatives with imprecise input data and ranks them automatically. The solution of a selected example problem is included to clarify the theory of the model

    Spline network modeling and fault classification of a heating ventilation and air-conditioning system

    A spline network, that is an alternative to artificial neural networks, is introduced in this dissertation. This network has an input layer, a single hidden layer, and an output layer. Spline basis functions, with small support, are used as the activation functions. The network is used to model the steady state operation of a complex Heating Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) system. Real data was used to train the spline network. A neural network was also trained on the same set of data. Based on the training process, it is possible to conclude that when compared to artificial neural networks, the spline network is much faster to train, needed fewer input-output pairs, and had no convergence problems. The weights of the spline network are obtained by solving a set of linear equations;The spline network model of the HVAC system is used to detect faulty operation of the actual system. Once abnormal operation of the system is monitored, a fuzzy neural network is used to locate the faulty component. The fuzzy neural network is trained on data obtained by simulating fault scenarios. This network minimizes ambiguities at decision boundaries. The results of fault classification are presented in the dissertation

    Fuzzy Interpolation Systems and Applications

    Fuzzy inference systems provide a simple yet effective solution to complex non-linear problems, which have been applied to numerous real-world applications with great success. However, conventional fuzzy inference systems may suffer from either too sparse, too complex or imbalanced rule bases, given that the data may be unevenly distributed in the problem space regardless of its volume. Fuzzy interpolation addresses this. It enables fuzzy inferences with sparse rule bases when the sparse rule base does not cover a given input, and it simplifies very dense rule bases by approximating certain rules with their neighbouring ones. This chapter systematically reviews different types of fuzzy interpolation approaches and their variations, in terms of both the interpolation mechanism (inference engine) and sparse rule base generation. Representative applications of fuzzy interpolation in the field of control are also revisited in this chapter, which not only validate fuzzy interpolation approaches but also demonstrate its efficacy and potential for wider applications
