    Signal direction-of-arrival and amplitude estimation for multiple-row bathymetric sidescan sonars

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution February 1998In practical applications with bathymetric sidescan sonars, the multipath reflections and other directional interferences are the key limiting factors for a better performance. This thesis proposes a new scheme to deal with the interferences using a multiple-row bathymetric sidescan sonar. Instead of smoothing the measurements over some time or angle intervals, which was previously widely investigated, we resolve the multipath interferences from the direct signal. Two approaches on signal direction-of-arrival DOA and amplitude estimation are developed, the correlated signal direction estimate CSDE for three-row systems and the ESPRIT-based method. These approaches are compared using different sonar data models, including a stochastic model from the statistical analysis on bottom scattering and a coherent model from the analysis on interference field; the simulations show the ESPRIT-based approach is quite robust at the angular separation of 100 between two sources and at the signal-to-noise ratio above 10dB except for highly coherent or temporally correlated signals, for which CSDE works very well. The computer simulation results and the discussions on practical algorithm implementation indicate the proposed scheme can be applied to a real multiple-row bathymetric sidescan sonar. With the capability to simultaneously resolve two or more directional signals, the new sonar model should work better for a wider variety of practical situations in shallow water with out significant increase of the system cost.Funding supporting my thesis research project was provided by the Office of Naval Research ONR

    Sparse Bases and Bayesian Inference of Electromagnetic Scattering

    Many approaches in CEM rely on the decomposition of complex radiation and scattering behavior with a set of basis vectors. Accurate estimation of the quantities of interest can be synthesized through a weighted sum of these vectors. In addition to basis decompositions, sparse signal processing techniques developed in the CS community can be leveraged when only a small subset of the basis vectors are required to sufficiently represent the quantity of interest. We investigate several concepts in which novel bases are applied to common electromagnetic problems and leverage the sparsity property to improve performance and/or reduce computational burden. The first concept explores the use of multiple types of scattering primitives to reconstruct scattering patterns of electrically large targets. Using a combination of isotropic point scatterers and wedge diffraction primitives as our bases, a 40% reduction in reconstruction error can be achieved. Next, a sparse basis is used to improve DOA estimation. We implement the BSBL technique to determine the angle of arrival of multiple incident signals with only a single snapshot of data from an arbitrary arrangement of non-isotropic antennas. This is an improvement over the current state-of-the-art, where restrictions on the antenna type, configuration, and a priori knowledge of the number of signals are often assumed. Lastly, we investigate the feasibility of a basis set to reconstruct the scattering patterns of electrically small targets. The basis is derived from the TCM and can capture non-localized scattering behavior. Preliminary results indicate that this basis may be used in an interpolation and extrapolation scheme to generate scattering patterns over multiple frequencies

    A room acoustics measurement system using non-invasive microphone arrays

    This thesis summarises research into adaptive room correction for small rooms and pre-recorded material, for example music of films. A measurement system to predict the sound at a remote location within a room, without a microphone at that location was investigated. This would allow the sound within a room to be adaptively manipulated to ensure that all listeners received optimum sound, therefore increasing their enjoyment. The solution presented used small microphone arrays, mounted on the room's walls. A unique geometry and processing system was designed, incorporating three processing stages, temporal, spatial and spectral. The temporal processing identifies individual reflection arrival times from the recorded data. Spatial processing estimates the angles of arrival of the reflections so that the three-dimensional coordinates of the reflections' origin can be calculated. The spectral processing then estimates the frequency response of the reflection. These estimates allow a mathematical model of the room to be calculated, based on the acoustic measurements made in the actual room. The model can then be used to predict the sound at different locations within the room. A simulated model of a room was produced to allow fast development of algorithms. Measurements in real rooms were then conducted and analysed to verify the theoretical models developed and to aid further development of the system.     Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water

    The goal of the research was to develop best practices for image signal processing method for InSAS systems for bathymetric height determination. Improvements over existing techniques comes from the fusion of Chirp-Scaling a phase preserving beamforming techniques to form a SAS image, an interferometric Vernier method to unwrap the phase; and confirming the direction of arrival with the MUltiple SIgnal Channel (MUSIC) estimation technique. The fusion of Chirp-Scaling, Vernier, and MUSIC lead to the stability in the bathymetric height measurement, and improvements in resolution. This method is computationally faster, and used less memory then existing techniques

    Autonomous Vehicles: MMW Radar Backscattering Modeling of Traffic Environment, Vehicular Communication Modeling, and Antenna Designs

    77 GHz Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar serves as an essential component among many sensors required for autonomous navigation. High-fidelity simulation is indispensable for nowadays’ development of advanced automotive radar systems because radar simulation can accelerate the design and testing process and help people to better understand and process the radar data. The main challenge in automotive radar simulation is to simulate the complex scattering behavior of various targets in real time, which is required for sensor fusion with other sensory simulation, e.g. optical image simulation. In this thesis, an asymptotic method based on a fast-wideband physical optics (PO) calculation is developed and applied to get high fidelity radar response of traffic scenes and generate the corresponding radar images from traffic targets. The targets include pedestrians, vehicles, and other stationary targets. To further accelerate the simulation into real time, a physics-based statistical approach is developed. The RCS of targets are fit into statistical distributions, and then the statistical parameters are summarized as functions of range and aspect angles, and other attributes of the targets. For advanced radar with multiple transmitters and receivers, pixelated-scatterer statistical RCS models are developed to represent objects as extend targets and relax the requirement for far-field condition. A real-time radar scene simulation software, which will be referred to as Michigan Automotive Radar Scene Simulator (MARSS), based on the statistical models are developed and integrated with a physical 3D scene generation software (Unreal Engine 4). One of the major challenges in radar signal processing is to detect the angle of arrival (AOA) of multiple targets. A new analytic multiple-sources AOA estimation algorithm that outperforms many well-known AOA estimation algorithms is developed and verified by experiments. Moreover, the statistical parameters of RCS from targets and radar images are used in target classification approaches based on machine learning methods. In realistic road traffic environment, foliage is commonly encountered that can potentially block the line-of-sight link. In the second part of the thesis, a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) vehicular propagation channel model for tree trunks at two vehicular communication bands (5.9 GHz and 60 GHz) is proposed. Both near-field and far-field scattering models from tree trunk are developed based on modal expansion and surface current integral method. To make the results fast accessible and retractable, a macro model based on artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to fit the path loss calculated from the complex electromagnetic (EM) based methods. In the third part of the thesis, two broadband (bandwidth > 50%) omnidirectional antenna designs are discussed to enable polarization diversity for next-generation communication systems. The first design is a compact horizontally polarized (HP) antenna, which contains four folded dipole radiators and utilizing their mutual coupling to enhance the bandwidth. The second one is a circularly polarized (CP) antenna. It is composed of one ultra-wide-band (UWB) monopole, the compact HP antenna, and a dedicatedly designed asymmetric power divider based feeding network.     Motion Compensation for Near-Range Synthetic Aperture Radar Applications

    The work focuses on the analysis of influences of motion errors on near-range SAR applications and design of specific motion measuring and compensation algorithms. First, a novel metric to determine the optimum antenna beamwidth is proposed. Then, a comprehensive investigation of influences of motion errors on the SAR image is provided. On this ground, new algorithms for motion measuring and compensation using low cost inertial measurement units (IMU) are developed and successfully demonstrated

    Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems

    Modelling and simulation in acoustics is currently gaining importance. In fact, with the development and improvement of innovative computational techniques and with the growing need for predictive models, an impressive boost has been observed in several research and application areas, such as noise control, indoor acoustics, and industrial applications. This led us to the proposal of a special issue about “Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems”, as we believe in the importance of these topics in modern acoustics’ studies. In total, 81 papers were submitted and 33 of them were published, with an acceptance rate of 37.5%. According to the number of papers submitted, it can be affirmed that this is a trending topic in the scientific and academic community and this special issue will try to provide a future reference for the research that will be developed in coming years
