    Computational rim illumination of dynamic subjects using aerial robots

    Lighting plays a major role in photography. Professional photographers use elaborate installations to light their subjects and achieve sophisticated styles. However, lighting moving subjects performing dynamic tasks presents significant challenges and requires expensive manual intervention. A skilled additional assistant might be needed to reposition lights as the subject changes pose or moves, and the extra logistics significantly raises costs and time. The associated latencies as the assistant lights the subject, and the communication required from the photographer to achieve optimum lighting could mean missing a critical shot. We present a new approach to lighting dynamic subjects where an aerial robot equipped with a portable light source lights the subject to automatically achieve a desired lighting effect. We focus on rim lighting, a particularly challenging effect to achieve with dynamic subjects, and allow the photographer to specify a required rim width. Our algorithm processes the images from the photographer׳s camera and provides necessary motion commands to the aerial robot to achieve the desired rim width in the resulting photographs. With an indoor setup, we demonstrate a control approach that localizes the aerial robot with reference to the subject and tracks the subject to achieve the necessary motion. In addition to indoor experiments, we perform open-loop outdoor experiments in a realistic photo-shooting scenario to understand lighting ergonomics. Our proof-of-concept results demonstrate the utility of robots in computational lighting

The last decades witnessed many significant research in this field however, it is still a challenging problem for automatic visual surveillance. The ever increase in research of the field of crowd dynamics and crowd motion necessitates a detailed and updated survey of different techniques and trends in this field. This paper presents a survey on crowd detection and crowd density estimation from moving platform and surveys the different methods employed for this purpose. This review category and delineates several detections and counting estimation methods that have been applied for the examination of scenes from static and moving platforms

    Autonomous Quadcopter Videographer

    In recent years, the interest in quadcopters as a robotics platform for autonomous photography has increased. This is due to their small size and mobility, which allow them to reach places that are difficult or even impossible for humans. This thesis focuses on the design of an autonomous quadcopter videographer, i.e. a quadcopter capable of capturing good footage of a specific subject. In order to obtain this footage, the system needs to choose appropriate vantage points and control the quadcopter. Skilled human videographers can easily spot good filming locations where the subject and its actions can be seen clearly in the resulting video footage, but translating this knowledge to a robot can be complex. We present an autonomous system implemented on a commercially available quadcopter that achieves this using only the monocular information and an accelerometer. Our system has two vantage point selection strategies: 1) a reactive approach, which moves the robot to a fixed location with respect to the human and 2) the combination of the reactive approach and a POMDP planner that considers the target\u27s movement intentions. We compare the behavior of these two approaches under different target movement scenarios. The results show that the POMDP planner obtains more stable footage with less quadcopter motion

    Navigation of Autonomous Light Vehicles Using an Optimal Trajectory Planning Algorithm

    [EN] Autonomous navigation is a complex problem that involves different tasks, such as location of the mobile robot in the scenario, robotic mapping, generating the trajectory, navigating from the initial point to the target point, detecting objects it may encounter in its path, etc. This paper presents a new optimal trajectory planning algorithm that allows the assessment of the energy efficiency of autonomous light vehicles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that this is carried out by minimizing the travel time while considering the vehicle's dynamic behavior, its limitations, and with the capability of avoiding obstacles and constraining energy consumption. This enables the automotive industry to design environmentally sustainable strategies towards compliance with governmental greenhouse gas (GHG) emission regulations and for climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. The reduction in energy consumption also allows companies to stay competitive in the marketplace. The vehicle navigation control is efficiently implemented through a middleware of component-based software development (CBSD) based on a Robot Operating System (ROS) package. It boosts the reuse of software components and the development of systems from other existing systems. Therefore, it allows the avoidance of complex control software architectures to integrate the different hardware and software components. The global maps are created by scanning the environment with FARO 3D and 2D SICK laser sensors. The proposed algorithm presents a low computational cost and has been implemented as a new module of distributed architecture. It has been integrated into the ROS package to achieve real time autonomous navigation of the vehicle.     This book book is a collection of 18 chapters written by internationally recognized experts and well-known professionals of the field. Chapters contribute to diverse facets of contemporary robotics and autonomous systems. The volume is organized in four thematic parts according to the main subjects, regarding the recent advances in the contemporary robotics. The first thematic topics of the book are devoted to the theoretical issues. This includes development of algorithms for automatic trajectory generation using redudancy resolution scheme, intelligent algorithms for robotic grasping, modelling approach for reactive mode handling of flexible manufacturing and design of an advanced controller for robot manipulators. The second part of the book deals with different aspects of robot calibration and sensing.
