    Three dimensional visualisation of Port Dickson Polytechnic campus in cityengine web viewer

    Development of modern technology and its ability to store, process and supply of digital data has led to a demand for three dimensional (3D) modeling of virtual campus has increased dramatically. Of late, many educational institutes have developed their own campus geodatabase in 3D environment. In this research, the emphasis is given on the development of the 3D building model campus using close range photogrammetry approach due to high cost of data acquisition techniques using airbone laser scanning, terrestrial laser scanning techniques and availability of data. Thus, the close range photogrammetry technique has been selected due to low cost method for data acquisition through capturing the selected building photographs using digital camera. In order to develop the 3D building models, six buildings with different architectural designs and geometries in Port Dickson Polytechnic campus have been chosen as prototype which are modelled using close range photogrammtry approach. The photographs of buildings are then processed using PhotoModeler software to produce the 3D building models in the level of detail (LoD) 2. The building models are textured with the real photographs taken from the field while the roof of the buildings are edited using the SketchUp software. The building models are also georeferenced to the real world coordinate system based on the geocentric Rectified Skew Orthomorphic (RSO) coordinate system. Due to the lack of information access on the web in 3D, CityEngine Web Viewer is used for 3D visualisation of the building models and supported features are also be added to create a realistic model of 3D virtual campus. Through the viewer, the users are able to navigate the 3D building models, zooming and performing the spatial query to extract the information of the buildings. The accuracy of 3D buildings models are evaluated and determined based on the visual analyses and quantitative analyses. At the end of the research, the 3D buildings models can be visualised in the LoD 2

    Mobile 2D and 3D Spatial Query Techniques for the Geospatial Web

    The increasing availability of abundant geographically referenced information in the Geospatial Web provides a variety of opportunities for developing value-added LBS applications. However, large data volumes of the Geospatial Web and small mobile device displays impose a data visualization problem, as the amount of searchable information overwhelms the display when too many query results are returned. Excessive returned results clutter the mobile display, making it harder for users to prioritize information and causes confusion and usability problems. Mobile Spatial Interaction (MSI) research into this “information overload” problem is ongoing where map personalization and other semantic based filtering mechanisms are essential to de-clutter and adapt the exploration of the real-world to the processing/display limitations of mobile devices. In this thesis, we propose that another way to filter this information is to intelligently refine the search space. 3DQ (3-Dimensional Query) is our novel MSI prototype for information discovery on today’s location and orientation-aware smartphones within 3D Geospatial Web environments. Our application incorporates human interactions (interpreted from embedded sensors) in the geospatial query process by determining the shape of their actual visibility space as a query “window” in a spatial database, e.g. Isovist in 2D and Threat Dome in 3D. This effectively applies hidden query removal (HQR) functionality in 360º 3D that takes into account both the horizontal and vertical dimensions when calculating the 3D search space, significantly reducing display clutter and information overload on mobile devices. The effect is a more accurate and expected search result for mobile LBS applications by returning information on only those objects visible within a user’s 3D field-of-view

    Método para la evaluación de usabilidad de sitios web transaccionales basado en el proceso de inspección heurística

    La usabilidad es considerada uno de los factores más importantes en el desarrollo de productos de software. Este atributo de calidad está referido al grado en que, usuarios específicos de un determinado aplicativo, pueden fácilmente hacer uso del software para lograr su propósito. Dada la importancia de este aspecto en el éxito de las aplicaciones informáticas, múltiples métodos de evaluación han surgido como instrumentos de medición que permiten determinar si la propuesta de diseño de la interfaz de un sistema de software es entendible, fácil de usar, atractiva y agradable al usuario. El método de evaluación heurística es uno de los métodos más utilizados en el área de Interacción Humano-Computador (HCI) para este propósito debido al bajo costo de su ejecución en comparación otras técnicas existentes. Sin embargo, a pesar de su amplio uso extensivo durante los últimos años, no existe un procedimiento formal para llevar a cabo este proceso de evaluación. Jakob Nielsen, el autor de esta técnica de inspección, ofrece únicamente lineamientos generales que, según la investigación realizada, tienden a ser interpretados de diferentes maneras por los especialistas. Por tal motivo, se ha desarrollado el presente proyecto de investigación que tiene como objetivo establecer un proceso sistemático, estructurado, organizado y formal para llevar a cabo evaluaciones heurísticas a productos de software. En base a un análisis exhaustivo realizado a aquellos estudios que reportan en la literatura el uso del método de evaluación heurística como parte del proceso de desarrollo de software, se ha formulado un nuevo método de evaluación basado en cinco fases: (1) planificación, (2) entrenamiento, (3) evaluación, (4) discusión y (5) reporte. Cada una de las fases propuestas que componen el protocolo de inspección contiene un conjunto de actividades bien definidas a ser realizadas por el equipo de evaluación como parte del proceso de inspección. Asimismo, se han establecido ciertos roles que deberán desempeñar los integrantes del equipo de inspectores para asegurar la calidad de los resultados y un apropiado desarrollo de la evaluación heurística. La nueva propuesta ha sido validada en dos escenarios académicos distintos (en Colombia, en una universidad pública, y en Perú, en dos universidades tanto en una pública como en una privada) demostrando en todos casos que es posible identificar más problemas de usabilidad altamente severos y críticos cuando un proceso estructurado de inspección es adoptado por los evaluadores. Otro aspecto favorable que muestran los resultados es que los evaluadores tienden a cometer menos errores de asociación (entre heurística que es incumplida y problemas de usabilidad identificados) y que la propuesta es percibida como fácil de usar y útil. Al validarse la nueva propuesta desarrollada por el autor de este estudio se consolida un nuevo conocimiento que aporta al bagaje cultural de la ciencia.Tesi

    Eine Analyse der Literatur zur Referenzmodellierung im Geschäftsprozessmanagement unter Berücksichtigung quantitativer Methoden

    Im Geschäftsprozessmanagement nimmt die Referenzmodellierung bei der Gestaltung von Geschäftsprozessen eine große Bedeutung ein, da auf bereits existierende Modelle zurückgegriffen werden kann. So kann Zeit für die Entwicklung der Prozesse eingespart und von bereits etabliertem Wissen profitiert werden. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit analysiert die Literatur im Bereich der Referenzmodellierung im Geschäftsprozessmanagement unter Berücksichtigung quantitativer Methoden. Es werden insbesondere die Forschungsrichtungen bzw. Themenbereiche, Entwicklungen und der aktuelle Stand der Literatur in diesem Bereich ermittelt. Zunächst werden deutsch- und englischsprachige Artikel nach bestimmten Kriterien ausgewählt. Anschließend folgt eine quantitativ orientierte Analyse der Literatur. Dabei kommt die Latente Semantische Analyse zum Einsatz, mit deren Hilfe Themenbereiche ermittelt werden und die einzelnen Beiträge den ermittelten Themenbereichen zugeordnet werden können. Darüber hinaus wird die Entwicklung der Anzahl der Artikel in den Themenbereichen im Zeitverlauf betrachtet und auf Unterschiede zwischen der deutsch- und englischsprachigen Literatur eingegangen. In der darauf folgenden qualitativ orientierten Analyse werden die Artikel der einzelnen Themenbereiche inhaltlich analysiert und der aktuelle Stand der Forschung dargestellt. Nicht zuletzt werden die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Analyse in Bezug zu den Ergebnissen der quantitativen Analyse gesetzt

    Evaluación macroscópica del desplazamiento peatonal en la Av. Dintilhac a partir de un estudio microscópico

    El estudio del desplazamiento peatonal ha sido un tema de interés para varios investigadores. A pesar de que numerosas investigaciones se han realizado para grupos peatonales con propósito de viaje obligatorio, son escasas las ocasiones en donde el objeto de estudio son universitarios con propósitos de viaje recreacionales. Es por tal motivo que en la presente investigación se realiza un estudio macroscópico del transporte peatonal en una vía principal dentro del campus de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, denominada Av. Dintilhac, la cuales es exclusiva para viandantes que en su mayoría jóvenes universitarios. Para tal finalidad, se recolecta información macroscópica del desplazamiento peatonal en tramos representativos de esta avenida y también las características físicas del entorno, mediante técnicas manuales y filmaciones, para luego poder construir un modelo para la micro simulación de la red peatonal en el programa Viswalk 8.0. Posteriormente a realizar la calibración, la validación y las simulaciones necesarias para rescatar información macroscópica (principalmente las velocidades y densidades peatonales) y así obtener, luego de análisis estadísticos de los resultados con niveles de confianza adecuados, la gráfica del diagrama fundamental y su respectiva fórmula. De este modo, se derivan diversas gráficas y fórmulas que permiten el análisis del desplazamiento peatonal en la Av. Dintilhac. Se finaliza la investigación con comparaciones con estudios previos a diferentes tipos de peatones, con la conclusión de que nuestro modelo se asemejaría en gran medida a estos modelos planteados con anterioridad, pero debido a la diferencia en la naturaleza del uso de la Av. Dintilhac (más social y de recreación que para viajes obligatorios), para una misma velocidad, las densidades serían menores. Además, se realiza la calificación de la calidad del desplazamiento mediante el uso de los niveles de servicio sugeridos por la H.C.M. (2000), en la cual se determinó que el nivel de desempeño de la Av. Dintilhac es aceptable, ya que, en espacios de tiempo de 10 minutos sería E, y en un intervalo de 30 minutos sería B. Por último, se proporcionan sugerencias para la modificación de la infraestructura de la avenida a partir de las gráficas ya obtenidas y en las cuales la densidad peatonal es uno de los ejes.Tesi

    Cartoons as interdiscourse : a quali-quantitative analysis of social representations based on collective imagination in cartoons produced after the Charlie Hebdo attack

    The attacks against Charlie Hebdo in Paris at the beginning of the year 2015 urged many cartoonists – most professionals but some laymen as well – to create cartoons as a reaction to this tragedy. The main goal of this article is to show how traumatic events like this one can converge in a rather limited set of metaphors, ranging from easily recognizable topoi to rather vague interdiscourses that circulate in contemporary societies. To do so, we analyzed 450 cartoons that were produced as a reaction to the Charlie Hebdo attacks, and took a quali-quantitative approach that draws both on discourse analysis and semiotics. In this paper, we identified eight main themes and we analyzed the five ones which are anchored in collective imagination (the pen against the sword, the journalist as a modern hero, etc.). Then, we studied the cartoons at figurative, narrative and thematic levels thanks to Greimas’ model of the semiotic square. This paper shows the ways in which these cartoons build upon a memory-based network of events from the recent past (particularly 9/11), and more generally on a collective imagination which can be linked to Western values.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Utilizing advanced modelling approaches for forecasting air travel demand: a case study of Australia’s domestic low cost carriers

    One of the most pervasive trends in the global airline industry over the past few three decades has been the rapid development of low cost carriers (LCCs). Australia has not been immune to this trend. Following deregulation of Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic air travel market in the 1990s, a number of LCCs have entered the market, and these carriers have now captured around 31 per cent of the market. Australia&amp;rsquo;s LCCs require reliable and accurate passenger demand forecasts as part of their fleet, network, and commercial planning and for scaling investments in fleet and their associated infrastructure. Historically, the multiple linear regression (MLR) approach has been the most popular and recommended method for forecasting airline passenger demand. In more recent times, however, new advanced artificial intelligence-based forecasting approaches &amp;ndash; artificial neural networks (ANNs), genetic algorithm (GA), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) - have been applied in a broad range of disciplines. In light of the critical importance of passenger demand forecasts for airline management, as well as the recent developments in artificial intelligence-based forecasting methods, the key aim of this thesis was to specify and empirically examine three artificial intelligence-based approaches (ANNs, GA and ANFIS) as well as the MLR approach, in order to identify the optimum model for forecasting Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand. This is the first time that such models &amp;ndash; enplaned passengers (PAX) and revenue passenger kilometres performed (RPKs) &amp;ndash; have been proposed and tested for forecasting Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand. The results show that of the four modeling approaches used in this study that the new, and novel, ANFIS approach provides the most accurate, reliable, and highest predictive capability for forecasting Australia&amp;rsquo;s LCCs demand. A second aim of the thesis was to explore the principal determinants of Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand in order to achieve a greater understanding of the factors which influence air travel demand. The results show that the primary determinants of Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand are real best discount airfare, population, real GDP, real GDP per capita, unemployment, world jet fuel prices, real interest rates, and tourism attractiveness. Interestingly three determinants, unemployment, tourism attractiveness, and real interest rates, which have not been empirically examined in any previously reported study of Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand, proved to be important predictor variables of Australia&amp;rsquo;s domestic LCCs demand. The thesis also found that Australia&amp;rsquo;s LCCs have increasingly embraced a hybrid business model over the past decade. This strategy is similar to LCCs based in other parts of the world. The core outcome of this research, the fact that modelling based on artificial intelligence approaches is far more effective than the traditional models prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), means that future work is essential to validate this. From an academic perspective, the modelling presented in this study offers considerable promise for future air travel demand forecasting. The results of this thesis provide new insights into LCCs passenger demand forecasting methods and can assist LCCs executives, airports, aviation consultants, and government agencies with a variety of future planning considerations
