A graph rewriting programming language for graph drawing
This paper describes Grrr, a prototype visual graph drawing tool. Previously there were no visual languages for programming graph drawing algorithms despite the inherently visual nature of the process. The languages which gave a diagrammatic view of graphs were not computationally complete and so could not be used to implement complex graph drawing algorithms. Hence current graph drawing tools are all text based. Recent developments in graph rewriting systems have produced computationally complete languages which give a visual view of graphs both whilst programming and during execution. Grrr, based on the Spider system, is a general purpose graph rewriting programming language which has now been extended in order to demonstrate the feasibility of visual graph drawing
Verification of Graph Programs
This thesis is concerned with verifying the correctness of programs written in GP 2 (for Graph Programs), an experimental, nondeterministic graph manipulation language, in which program states are graphs, and computational steps are applications of graph transformation rules. GP 2 allows for visual programming at a high level of abstraction, with the programmer freed from manipulating low-level data structures and instead solving graph-based problems in a direct, declarative, and rule-based way. To verify that a graph program meets some specification, however, has been -- prior to the work described in this thesis -- an ad hoc task, detracting from the appeal of using GP 2 to reason about graph algorithms, high-level system specifications, pointer structures, and the many other practical problems in software engineering and programming languages that can be modelled as graph problems. This thesis describes some contributions towards the challenge of verifying graph programs, in particular, Hoare logics with which correctness specifications can be proven in a syntax-directed and compositional manner.
We contribute calculi of proof rules for GP 2 that allow for rigorous reasoning about both partial correctness and termination of graph programs. These are given in an extensional style, i.e. independent of fixed assertion languages. This approach allows for the re-use of proof rules with different assertion languages for graphs, and moreover, allows for properties of the calculi to be inherited: soundness, completeness for termination, and relative completeness (for sufficiently expressive assertion languages).
We propose E-conditions as a graphical, intuitive assertion language for expressing properties of graphs -- both about their structure and labelling -- generalising the nested conditions of Habel, Pennemann, and Rensink. We instantiate our calculi with this language, explore the relationship between the decidability of the model checking problem and the existence of effective constructions for the extensional assertions, and fix a subclass of graph programs for which we have both. The calculi are then demonstrated by verifying a number of data- and structure-manipulating programs.
We explore the relationship between E-conditions and classical logic, defining translations between the former and a many-sorted predicate logic over graphs; the logic being a potential front end to an implementation of our work in a proof assistant.
Finally, we speculate on several avenues of interesting future work; in particular, a possible extension of E-conditions with transitive closure, for proving specifications involving properties about arbitrary-length paths
Strategic Port Graph Rewriting: An Interactive Modelling and Analysis Framework
We present strategic portgraph rewriting as a basis for the implementation of
visual modelling and analysis tools. The goal is to facilitate the
specification, analysis and simulation of complex systems, using port graphs. A
system is represented by an initial graph and a collection of graph rewriting
rules, together with a user-defined strategy to control the application of
rules. The strategy language includes constructs to deal with graph traversal
and management of rewriting positions in the graph. We give a small-step
operational semantics for the language, and describe its implementation in the

Graph Algorithm Animation with Grrr
We discuss geometric positioning, highlighting of visited nodes and user defined highlighting that form the algorithm animation facilities in the Grrr graph rewriting programming language. The main purpose of animation was initially for the debugging and profiling of Grrr code, but recently it has been extended for the purpose of teaching algorithms to undergraduate students. The animation is restricted to graph based algorithms such as graph drawing, list manipulation or more traditional graph theory. The visual nature of the Grrr system allows much animation to be gained for free, with no extra user effort beyond the coding of the algorithm, but we also discuss user defined animations, where custom algorithm visualisations can be explicitly defined for teaching and demonstration purposes
Designing the automatic transformation of visual languages
AbstractThe design process of complex systems requires a precise checking of the functional and dependability attributes of the target design. The growing complexity of systems necessitates the use of formal methods, as the exhaustiveness of checks performed by the traditional simulation and testing is insufficient.For this reason, the mathematical models of various formal verification tools are automatically derived from UML-diagrams of the model by mathematical transformations guaranteeing a complete consistency between the target design and the models of verification and validation tools.In the current paper, a general framework for an automated model transformation system is presented. The method starts from a uniform visual description and a formal proof concept of the particular transformations by integrating the powerful computational paradigm of graph transformation, planner algorithms of artificial intelligence, and various concepts of computer engineering
A Graph Rewriting Visual Language for Database Programming
Textual database programming languages are computationally complete, but have the disadvantage of giving the user a non-intuitive view of the database information that is being manipulated. Visual languages developed in recent years have allowed naive users access to a direct representation of data, often in a graph form, but have concentrated on user interface rather than complex programming tasks. There is a need for a system which combines the advantages of both these programming methods. We describe an implementation of Spider, an experimental visual database programming language aimed at programmers. It uses a graph rewriting paradigm as a basis for a fully visual, computationally complete language. The graphs it rewrites represent the schema and instances of a database. The unique graph rewriting method used by Spider has syntactic and semantic simplicity. Its form of algorithmic expression allows complex computation to be easily represented in short programs. Furthermore, Spider has greater power than normally provided in textual systems, and we show that queries on the schema and associative queries can be performed easily and without requiring any additions to the language
