Dynamic resource allocation in a hierarchical multiprocessor system: A preliminary study
An integrated system approach to dynamic resource allocation is proposed. Some of the problems in dynamic resource allocation and the relationship of these problems to system structures are examined. A general dynamic resource allocation scheme is presented. A hierarchial system architecture which dynamically maps between processor structure and programs at multiple levels of instantiations is described. Simulation experiments were conducted to study dynamic resource allocation on the proposed system. Preliminary evaluation based on simple dynamic resource allocation algorithms indicates that with the proposed system approach, the complexity of dynamic resource management could be significantly reduced while achieving reasonable effective dynamic resource allocation
High Performance Algorithms for Counting Collisions and Pairwise Interactions
The problem of counting collisions or interactions is common in areas as
computer graphics and scientific simulations. Since it is a major bottleneck in
applications of these areas, a lot of research has been carried out on such
subject, mainly focused on techniques that allow calculations to be performed
within pruned sets of objects. This paper focuses on how interaction
calculation (such as collisions) within these sets can be done more efficiently
than existing approaches. Two algorithms are proposed: a sequential algorithm
that has linear complexity at the cost of high memory usage; and a parallel
algorithm, mathematically proved to be correct, that manages to use GPU
resources more efficiently than existing approaches. The proposed and existing
algorithms were implemented, and experiments show a speedup of 21.7 for the
sequential algorithm (on small problem size), and 1.12 for the parallel
proposal (large problem size). By improving interaction calculation, this work
contributes to research areas that promote interconnection in the modern world,
such as computer graphics and robotics.Comment: Accepted in ICCS 2019 and published in Springer's LNCS series.

The Simulation Model Partitioning Problem: an Adaptive Solution Based on Self-Clustering (Extended Version)
This paper is about partitioning in parallel and distributed simulation. That
means decomposing the simulation model into a numberof components and to
properly allocate them on the execution units. An adaptive solution based on
self-clustering, that considers both communication reduction and computational
load-balancing, is proposed. The implementation of the proposed mechanism is
tested using a simulation model that is challenging both in terms of structure
and dynamicity. Various configurations of the simulation model and the
execution environment have been considered. The obtained performance results
are analyzed using a reference cost model. The results demonstrate that the
proposed approach is promising and that it can reduce the simulation execution
time in both parallel and distributed architectures

A Weakly Supervised Approach for Estimating Spatial Density Functions from High-Resolution Satellite Imagery
We propose a neural network component, the regional aggregation layer, that
makes it possible to train a pixel-level density estimator using only
coarse-grained density aggregates, which reflect the number of objects in an
image region. Our approach is simple to use and does not require
domain-specific assumptions about the nature of the density function. We
evaluate our approach on several synthetic datasets. In addition, we use this
approach to learn to estimate high-resolution population and housing density
from satellite imagery. In all cases, we find that our approach results in
better density estimates than a commonly used baseline. We also show how our
housing density estimator can be used to classify buildings as residential or
non-residential.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. ACM SIGSPATIAL 2018, Seattle, US
ReSHAPE: A Framework for Dynamic Resizing and Scheduling of Homogeneous Applications in a Parallel Environment
Applications in science and engineering often require huge computational
resources for solving problems within a reasonable time frame. Parallel
supercomputers provide the computational infrastructure for solving such
problems. A traditional application scheduler running on a parallel cluster
only supports static scheduling where the number of processors allocated to an
application remains fixed throughout the lifetime of execution of the job. Due
to the unpredictability in job arrival times and varying resource requirements,
static scheduling can result in idle system resources thereby decreasing the
overall system throughput. In this paper we present a prototype framework
called ReSHAPE, which supports dynamic resizing of parallel MPI applications
executed on distributed memory platforms. The framework includes a scheduler
that supports resizing of applications, an API to enable applications to
interact with the scheduler, and a library that makes resizing viable.
Applications executed using the ReSHAPE scheduler framework can expand to take
advantage of additional free processors or can shrink to accommodate a high
priority application, without getting suspended. In our research, we have
mainly focused on structured applications that have two-dimensional data arrays
distributed across a two-dimensional processor grid. The resize library
includes algorithms for processor selection and processor mapping. Experimental
results show that the ReSHAPE framework can improve individual job turn-around
time and overall system throughput.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables Submitted to International Conference

3D medical volume segmentation using hybrid multiresolution statistical approaches
This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. Copyright © 2010 S AlZuâbi and A Amira.3D volume segmentation is the process of partitioning voxels into 3D regions (subvolumes) that represent meaningful physical entities which are more meaningful and easier to analyze and usable in future applications. Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) enables the preservation of an image according to certain levels of resolution or blurring. Because of multiresolution quality, wavelets have been deployed in image compression, denoising, and classification. This paper focuses on the implementation of efficient medical volume segmentation techniques. Multiresolution analysis including 3D wavelet and ridgelet has been used for feature extraction which can be modeled using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to segment the volume slices. A comparison study has been carried out to evaluate 2D and 3D techniques which reveals that 3D methodologies can accurately detect the Region Of Interest (ROI). Automatic segmentation has been achieved using HMMs where the ROI is detected accurately but suffers a long computation time for its calculations
