Program on Earth Observation Data Management Systems (EODMS), appendixes

    Get PDF
The needs of state, regional, and local agencies involved in natural resources management in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin are investigated to determine the design of satellite remotely sensed derivable information products. It is concluded that an operational Earth Observation Data Management System (EODMS) will be most beneficial if it provides a full range of services - from raw data acquisition to interpretation and dissemination of final information products. Included is a cost and performance analysis of alternative processing centers, and an assessment of the impacts of policy, regulation, and government structure on implementing large scale use of remote sensing technology in this community of users

The paper aims to describe the development of mining and utilization of black coal in the territory of the Slovak Republic. The authors also try to analyse the state of the financial health of black coal mining companies in our territory. The result of the paper is to provide a compact view of the development of coal mining in the context of the financial health of enterprises in this sector. We compare the development of coal production in Slovakia with the development of coal production in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria and Ukraine. We analyse the development of coal production within the Visegrad group along with the neighbouring state - Ukraine. Mining production in Slovakia decreased 15.70 per cent in November of 2018 over the same month in the previous year. Mining Production in Slovakia averaged -1.08 per cent from 2001 until 2018, reaching an all-time high of 135.30 per cent in July of 2007 and a record low of - 57 per cent in July of 2008.Web of Science24217116

A comprehensive review of industrial symbiosis

    Get PDF
Industrial symbiosis, which allows entities and companies that traditionally be separated, to cooperate among them in the sharing of resources, contributes to the increase of sustainability with environmental, economic and social benefits. Examples of industrial symbiosis have grown over the years with increasing geographic dispersion. Thus, through a comprehensive review of previous studies, this work aims to trace the trend of industrial symbiosis research and to map the existing case studies around the world, with a critical analysis of its impact. The analysis of the 584 selected publications allowed tracing the evolution of these according to their content and the type of article, as well as its distribution by journals. Based on the literature review, the main lines for research in industrial symbiosis are assessed, as well as an updated study of the published case studies is provided with emphasis on the location, type of industry and employed methodologies. Several challenges are then identified for future research. The results reveal the number of articles on industrial symbiosis has greatly increased since 2007 and China is the country with the largest number of publications and cases of industrial symbiosis, followed by the United States. The methods for quantifying impacts and analysing industrial symbiosis networks were the most widely used. The analysis of the published case studies allowed an overview of the industrial symbiosis in the world and showed that the potential for application is enormous, both in developed countries and in countries with developing economies, and although the most present economic activities in the synergies are associated with the manufacturing sector, the possibilities of industrial symbiosis are not restricted to these activities nor to the number of entities involved. The symbioses between industry and the surrounding community also have great potential for development with numerous advantages for both parties.publishe

Entrepreneurship in the Raw Materials Sector

    Get PDF
The Entrepreneurship in the Raw Materials Sector proceeding is a collection of papers focusing on the macroeconomic aspects of green growth, the business opportunities in the raw materials sector, and the challenges in entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship training. These papers were presented during the closing conference of LIMBRA (‘Decreasing the negative outcomes of brain drain in the raw materials sector‘), a project funded by EIT Raw Materials in the period of 2019-2021. LIMBRA primarily aims at generating new entrepreneurial ideas in the raw materials sector, and to encourage engineering students graduating in raw materials-related programmes to start their own businesses. This proceeding offers a good summary of our approach, and our results: identify the critical trends in the macroeconomic environment; learn about the specifics of the raw materials markets; develop new business ideas, and rely on your local ecosystem for extra knowledge, mentoring; and finally, help students to "Become stay-at-home entrepreneurs"

Exploring Green Innovation Practices: Content Analysis of the Fortune Global 500 Companies

    Get PDF
Green innovation has been attracting increasing attention due to its contributions to the conservation of resources and environmental protection. However, in the process of exploring green innovation, the allocation of resources and the direction of innovation are often inaccurate, which leads to a low efficiency of green innovation. If we can learn the green innovation practices from successful companies, we can certainly provide reference strategies for those companies that are exploring green innovation. Therefore, taking the Fortune Global 500 companies as the analysis object, this research develops the criteria of green innovation practices and conducts a cluster analysis of these companies by using a content analysis method. Finally, this paper summarizes the green innovation practices of the six types of industries and provides corresponding countermeasures and suggestions, which provide a strong reference for relevant companies to carry out green innovation

Analysis of the historical structural change in the German hard coal mining Ruhr area (case study)

    Get PDF
This case study examined the structural change in the Ruhr area caused by the low international competitiveness of German hard coal mining over the period from the late 1950s to 2015. It analysed the structural change process and the structural policies implemented as a reaction to this process with the objective to make this knowledge available for future structural change processes in other (coal) regions by deploying various qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social and economic research. A discourse analysis helped to recognise who supported which structural policy approaches and why - and thus gives indications of the possible relevance of experiences for other regions

ESG in the financial industry: What matters for rating analysts?

    Get PDF
This paper examines ESG rating analysts' views from Sustainalytics in order to highlight the main ESG features discussed across 11 sectors. We perform a topic modeling and a sentiment analysis to identify the content of analysts' opinions on the companies' ESG performance and to uncover the embedded sentiment associated with each ESG feature. The results of the topic modeling consist of 13 topics with a sector driven distribution. The analysis suggests that the best ESG performing financial institutions show to be actively committed to the code of best practice in governance and disclosure transparency. Whereas penalized financial entities seem to manifest less attention to ethical conduct and mis-selling. Furthermore, data privacy and security attract analysts' attention and should be closely monitored by financial entities. Finally, it is important to actively disclose ESG activities as the more information is available the better ESG commitment is reflected in analysts' views
