FPGA Implementation of a General Space Vector Approach on a 6-Leg Voltage Source Inverter

    Get PDF
A general algorithm of a Space Vector approach is implemented on a 6-leg VSI controlling a PM synchronous machine with three independent phases. In this last case, the necessity of controlling the zero-sequence current motivates the choice of a special family of vectors, different of this one used in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) intersective strategy and in common Space Vector PWM (SVPWM). To preserve the parallelism of the algorithm and fulfill the execution time constraints, the implementation is made on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Comparisons with more classical 2-level and 3-level PWM are provided.Fui8 within the SOFRACI projec

Control solutions for multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machine drives applied to electric vehicles

    Get PDF
Tecnali

A 3D Reduced Common Mode Voltage PWM Algorithm for a Five-Phase Six-Leg Inverter

    Get PDF
Neutral point voltage control converters (NPVCC) are being considered for AC drive applications, where their additional degree of freedom can be used for different purposes, such as fault tolerance or common mode voltage (CMV) reduction. For every PWM-driven converter, the CMV is an issue that must be considered since it can lead to shaft voltages between rotor and stator windings, generating bearing currents that accelerate bearing degradation, and can also produce a high level of electromagnetic interference (EMI). In light of these considerations, in this paper a three-dimensional reduced common mode voltage PWM (3D RCMV-PWM) technique is proposed which effectively reduces CMV in five-phase six-leg NPVCCs. The mathematical description of both the converter and the modulation technique, in space-vector and carrier-based approaches, is included. Furthermore, the simulation and experimental analysis validate the CMV reduction capability in addition to the good behaviour in terms of the efficiency and harmonic distortion of the proposed RCMV-PWM algorithm. This work has been supported in part by the Government of Basque Country within the fund for research groups of the Basque University system IT1440-22 and MCIN/AEI/10.13039/ 501100011033 within the project PID2020-115126RB-I00

Metaheuristics for online drive train efficiency optimization in electric vehicles

    Get PDF
Utilization of electric vehicles provides a solution to several challenges in today’s individual mobility. However, ensuring maximum efficient operation of electric vehicles is required in order to overcome their greatest weakness: the limited range. Even though the overall efficiency is already high, incorporating DC/DC converter into the electric drivetrain improves the efficiency level further. This inclusion enables the dynamic optimization of the intermediate voltage level subject to the current driving demand (operating point) of the drivetrain. Moreover, the overall drivetrain efficiency depends on the setup of other drivetrain components’ electric parameters. Solving this complex problem for different drivetrain parameter setups subject to the current driving demand needs considerable computing time for conventional solvers and cannot be delivered in real-time. Therefore, basic metaheuristics are identified and applied in order to assure the optimization process during driving. In order to compare the performance of metaheuristics for this task, we adjust and compare the performance of different basic metaheuristics (i.e. Monte-Carlo, Evolutionary Algorithms, Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Optimization). The results are statistically analyzed and based on a developed simulation model of an electric drivetrain. By applying the bestperforming metaheuristic, the efficiency of the drivetrain could be improved by up to 30% compared to an electric vehicle without the DC/DC- converter. The difference between computing times vary between 30 minutes (for the Exhaustive Search Algorithm) to about 0.2 seconds (Particle Swarm) per operating point. It is shown, that the Particle Swarm Optimization as well as the Evolutionary Algorithm procedures are the best-performing methods on this optimization problem. All in all, the results support the idea that online efficiency optimization in electric vehicles is possible with regard to computing time and success probability

A survey on capacitor voltage control in neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters

    Get PDF
Neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters are currently a suitable solution for a wide range of applications. It is well known that the capacitor voltage balance is a major issue for this topology. In this paper, a brief summary of the basic topologies, modulations, and features of neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters is presented, prior to a detailed description and analysis of the capacitor voltage balance behavior. Then, the most relevant methods to manage the capacitor voltage balance are presented and discussed, including operation in the overmodulation region, at low frequency-modulation indexes, with different numbers of AC phases, and with different numbers of levels. Both open- and closed-loop methods are discussed. Some methods based on adding external circuitry are also presented and analyzed. Although the focus of the paper is mainly DC–AC conversion, the techniques for capacitor voltage balance in DC–DC conversion are discussed as well. Finally, the paper concludes with some application examples benefiting from the presented techniques.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
