A Subband-Based SVM Front-End for Robust ASR
This work proposes a novel support vector machine (SVM) based robust
automatic speech recognition (ASR) front-end that operates on an ensemble of
the subband components of high-dimensional acoustic waveforms. The key issues
of selecting the appropriate SVM kernels for classification in frequency
subbands and the combination of individual subband classifiers using ensemble
methods are addressed. The proposed front-end is compared with state-of-the-art
ASR front-ends in terms of robustness to additive noise and linear filtering.
Experiments performed on the TIMIT phoneme classification task demonstrate the
benefits of the proposed subband based SVM front-end: it outperforms the
standard cepstral front-end in the presence of noise and linear filtering for
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) below 12-dB. A combination of the proposed
front-end with a conventional front-end such as MFCC yields further
improvements over the individual front ends across the full range of noise
levels
Detection of multiplicative noise in stationary random processes using second- and higher order statistics
This paper addresses the problem of detecting the presence of colored multiplicative noise, when the information process can be modeled as a parametric ARMA process. For the case of zero-mean multiplicative noise, a cumulant based suboptimal detector is studied. This detector tests the nullity of a specific cumulant slice. A second detector is developed when the multiplicative noise is nonzero mean. This detector consists of filtering the data by an estimated AR filter. Cumulants of the residual data are then shown to be well suited to the detection problem. Theoretical expressions for the asymptotic probability of
detection are given. Simulation-derived finite-sample ROC curves are shown for different sets of model parameters
Nonlocal Myriad Filters for Cauchy Noise Removal
The contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, we introduce a generalized
myriad filter, which is a method to compute the joint maximum likelihood
estimator of the location and the scale parameter of the Cauchy distribution.
Estimating only the location parameter is known as myriad filter. We propose an
efficient algorithm to compute the generalized myriad filter and prove its
convergence. Special cases of this algorithm result in the classical myriad
filtering, respective an algorithm for estimating only the scale parameter.
Based on an asymptotic analysis, we develop a second, even faster generalized
myriad filtering technique.
Second, we use our new approaches within a nonlocal, fully unsupervised
method to denoise images corrupted by Cauchy noise. Special attention is paid
to the determination of similar patches in noisy images. Numerical examples
demonstrate the excellent performance of our algorithms which have moreover the
advantage to be robust with respect to the parameter choice
Detection of variance changes and mean value jumps in measurement noise for multipath mitigation in urban navigation
This paper studies an urban navigation filter for land vehicles. Typical urban-canyon phenomena as multipath and GPS outages seriously degrade positioning performance. To deal with these scenarios a hybrid navigation system using GPS and dead-reckoning sensors is presented. This navigation system is complemented by a two-step detection procedure that classifies outliers according to their associated source of error. Two different situations will be considered in the presence of multipath. These situations correspond to the presence or absence of line of sight for the different GPS satellites. Therefore, two kinds of errors are potentially “corrupting” the pseudo-ranges, modeled as variance changes or mean value jumps in noise measurements. An original multiple model approach is proposed to detect, identify and correct these errors and provide a final consistent solution
Design of coupled mace filters for optical pattern recognition using practical spatial light modulators
Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are being used in correlation-based optical pattern recognition systems to implement the Fourier domain filters. Currently available SLMs have certain limitations with respect to the realizability of these filters. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate the SLM constraints in the design of the filters. The design of a SLM-constrained minimum average correlation energy (SLM-MACE) filter using the simulated annealing-based optimization technique was investigated. The SLM-MACE filter was synthesized for three different types of constraints. The performance of the filter was evaluated in terms of its recognition (discrimination) capabilities using computer simulations. The correlation plane characteristics of the SLM-MACE filter were found to be reasonably good. The SLM-MACE filter yielded far better results than the analytical MACE filter implemented on practical SLMs using the constrained magnitude technique. Further, the filter performance was evaluated in the presence of noise in the input test images. This work demonstrated the need to include the SLM constraints in the filter design. Finally, a method is suggested to reduce the computation time required for the synthesis of the SLM-MACE filter
Principal component analysis and perturbation theory–based robust damage detection of multifunctional aircraft structure
A fundamental problem in structural damage detection is to define an efficient feature to calculate a damage index. Furthermore, due to perturbations from various sources, we also need to define a rigorous threshold whose overtaking indicates the presence of damages. In this article, we develop a robust damage detection methodology based on principal component analysis. We first present an original damage index based on projection of the separation matrix, and then, we drive a novel adaptive threshold that does not rely on statistical assumptions. This threshold is analytic, and it is based on matrix perturbation theory. The efficiency of the method is illustrated using simulations of a composite smart structure and experimental results performed on a conformal load-bearing antenna structure laboratory test
