    A Nearly Quadratic Bound for the Decision Tree Complexity of k-SUM

    We show that the k-SUM problem can be solved by a linear decision tree of depth O(n^2 log^2 n),improving the recent bound O(n^3 log^3 n) of Cardinal et al. Our bound depends linearly on k, and allows us to conclude that the number of linear queries required to decide the n-dimensional Knapsack or SubsetSum problems is only O(n^3 log n), improving the currently best known bounds by a factor of n. Our algorithm extends to the RAM model, showing that the k-SUM problem can be solved in expected polynomial time, for any fixed k, with the above bound on the number of linear queries. Our approach relies on a new point-location mechanism, exploiting "Epsilon-cuttings" that are based on vertical decompositions in hyperplane arrangements in high dimensions. A major side result of the analysis in this paper is a sharper bound on the complexity of the vertical decomposition of such an arrangement (in terms of its dependence on the dimension). We hope that this study will reveal further structural properties of vertical decompositions in hyperplane arrangements

    Drawing Arrangement Graphs In Small Grids, Or How To Play Planarity

    We describe a linear-time algorithm that finds a planar drawing of every graph of a simple line or pseudoline arrangement within a grid of area O(n^{7/6}). No known input causes our algorithm to use area \Omega(n^{1+\epsilon}) for any \epsilon>0; finding such an input would represent significant progress on the famous k-set problem from discrete geometry.     On Range Searching with Semialgebraic Sets II

    Let PP be a set of nn points in Rd\R^d. We present a linear-size data structure for answering range queries on PP with constant-complexity semialgebraic sets as ranges, in time close to O(n1−1/d)O(n^{1-1/d}). It essentially matches the performance of similar structures for simplex range searching, and, for d≥5d\ge 5, significantly improves earlier solutions by the first two authors obtained in~1994. This almost settles a long-standing open problem in range searching. The data structure is based on the polynomial-partitioning technique of Guth and Katz [arXiv:1011.4105], which shows that for a parameter rr, 1<r≤n1 < r \le n, there exists a dd-variate polynomial ff of degree O(r1/d)O(r^{1/d}) such that each connected component of Rd∖Z(f)\R^d\setminus Z(f) contains at most n/rn/r points of PP, where Z(f)Z(f) is the zero set of ff. We present an efficient randomized algorithm for computing such a polynomial partition, which is of independent interest and is likely to have additional applications

    Minimizing the stabbing number of matchings, trees, and triangulations

    The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, Latex.     Recent progress on the combinatorial diameter of polytopes and simplicial complexes

    The Hirsch conjecture, posed in 1957, stated that the graph of a dd-dimensional polytope or polyhedron with nn facets cannot have diameter greater than n−dn - d. The conjecture itself has been disproved, but what we know about the underlying question is quite scarce. Most notably, no polynomial upper bound is known for the diameters that were conjectured to be linear. In contrast, no polyhedron violating the conjecture by more than 25% is known. This paper reviews several recent attempts and progress on the question. Some work in the world of polyhedra or (more often) bounded polytopes, but some try to shed light on the question by generalizing it to simplicial complexes. In particular, we include here our recent and previously unpublished proof that the maximum diameter of arbitrary simplicial complexes is in nTheta(d)n^{Theta(d)} and we summarize the main ideas in the polymath 3 project, a web-based collective effort trying to prove an upper bound of type nd for the diameters of polyhedra and of more general objects (including, e. g., simplicial manifolds).Comment: 34 pages.
