    The role of side information in steganography

    Das Ziel digitaler Steganographie ist es, eine geheime Kommunikation in digitalen Medien zu verstecken. Der übliche Ansatz ist es, die Nachricht in einem empirischen Trägermedium zu verstecken. In dieser Arbeit definieren wir den Begriff der Steganographischen Seiteninformation (SSI). Diese Definition umfasst alle wichtigen Eigenschaften von SSI. Wir begründen die Definition informationstheoretisch und erklären den Einsatz von SSI. Alle neueren steganographischen Algorithmen nutzen SSI um die Nachricht einzubetten. Wir entwickeln einen Angriff auf adaptive Steganographie und zeigen anhand von weit verbreiteten SSI-Varianten, dass unser Angriff funktioniert. Wir folgern, dass adaptive Steganographie spieltheoretisch beschrieben werden muss. Wir entwickeln ein spieltheoretisches Modell für solch ein System und berechnen die spieltheoretisch optimalen Strategien. Wir schlussfolgern, dass ein Steganograph diesen Strategien folgen sollte. Zudem entwickeln wir eine neue spieltheoretisch optimale Strategie zur Einbettung, die sogenannten Ausgleichseinbettungsstrategien.The  goal of digital steganography is to hide a secret communication in digital media. The common approach in steganography is to hide the secret messages in empirical cover objects. We are the first to define Steganographic Side Information (SSI). Our definition of SSI captures all relevant properties of SSI. We explain the common usage of SSI. All recent steganographic schemes use SSI to identify suitable areas fot the embedding change. We develop a targeted attack on four widely used variants of SSI, and show that our attack detects them almost perfectly. We argue that the steganographic competition must be framed with means of game theory. We present a game-theoretical framework that captures all relevant properties of such a steganographic system. We instantiate the framework with five different models and solve each of these models for game-theoretically optimal strategies. Inspired by our solutions, we give a new paradigm for secure adaptive steganography, the so-called equalizer embedding strategies

    Oblivious data hiding : a practical approach

    This dissertation presents an in-depth study of oblivious data hiding with the emphasis on quantization based schemes. Three main issues are specifically addressed: 1. Theoretical and practical aspects of embedder-detector design. 2. Performance evaluation, and analysis of performance vs. complexity tradeoffs. 3. Some application specific implementations. A communications framework based on channel adaptive encoding and channel independent decoding is proposed and interpreted in terms of oblivious data hiding problem. The duality between the suggested encoding-decoding scheme and practical embedding-detection schemes are examined. With this perspective, a formal treatment of the processing employed in quantization based hiding methods is presented. In accordance with these results, the key aspects of embedder-detector design problem for practical methods are laid out, and various embedding-detection schemes are compared in terms of probability of error, normalized correlation, and hiding rate performance merits assuming AWGN attack scenarios and using mean squared error distortion measure. The performance-complexity tradeoffs available for large and small embedding signal size (availability of high bandwidth and limitation of low bandwidth) cases are examined and some novel insights are offered. A new codeword generation scheme is proposed to enhance the performance of low-bandwidth applications. Embeddingdetection schemes are devised for watermarking application of data hiding, where robustness against the attacks is the main concern rather than the hiding rate or payload. In particular, cropping-resampling and lossy compression types of noninvertible attacks are considered in this dissertation work

    Multi-Class Classification for Identifying JPEG Steganography Embedding Methods

    Over 725 steganography tools are available over the Internet, each providing a method for covert transmission of secret messages. This research presents four steganalysis advancements that result in an algorithm that identifies the steganalysis tool used to embed a secret message in a JPEG image file. The algorithm includes feature generation, feature preprocessing, multi-class classification and classifier fusion. The first contribution is a new feature generation method which is based on the decomposition of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients used in the JPEG image encoder. The generated features are better suited to identifying discrepancies in each area of the decomposed DCT coefficients. Second, the classification accuracy is further improved with the development of a feature ranking technique in the preprocessing stage for the kernel Fisher s discriminant (KFD) and support vector machines (SVM) classifiers in the kernel space during the training process. Third, for the KFD and SVM two-class classifiers a classification tree is designed from the kernel space to provide a multi-class classification solution for both methods. Fourth, by analyzing a set of classifiers, signature detectors, and multi-class classification methods a classifier fusion system is developed to increase the detection accuracy of identifying the embedding method used in generating the steganography images. Based on classifying stego images created from research and commercial JPEG steganography techniques, F5, JP Hide, JSteg, Model-based, Model-based Version 1.2, OutGuess, Steganos, StegHide and UTSA embedding methods, the performance of the system shows a statistically significant increase in classification accuracy of 5%. In addition, this system provides a solution for identifying steganographic fingerprints as well as the ability to include future multi-class classification tools

    Complete characterization of perfectly secure stego-systems with mutually independent embedding operation

    Without any assumption on the cover source, this paper presents a complete characterization of all perfectly secure stego-systems that employ mutually independent embedding operation. It is shown that for a fixed embedding operation, the only perfectly secure stegosystems are those whose cover distribution is an element of a linear vector space with basis vectors determined by the embedding operation. Moreover, we also prove that such stego-systems are perfectly secure if and only if the Fisher information with respect to the embedding change rate is zero and thus Fisher information can be seen as an equivalent descriptor of steganographic security. This result is important for deriving steganographic capacity of imperfect stegosystems with covers modeled as Markov chains [1]. According to the survey of Global social media research in 2018, approximately 3.196 billion social media users are in worldwide. The numbers are estimated to grow rapidly further with the use of mobile smart devices and advancement in technology. Support vector machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), Multilayer perceptron neural network, and convolutional neural network (CNN) are some of the machine learning techniques used for personality identification in the literature review.     Z-Numbers-Based Approach to Hotel Service Quality Assessment

    In this study, we are analyzing the possibility of using Z-numbers for measuring the service quality and decision-making for quality improvement in the hotel industry. Techniques used for these purposes are based on consumer evalu- ations - expectations and perceptions. As a rule, these evaluations are expressed in crisp numbers (Likert scale) or fuzzy estimates. However, descriptions of the respondent opinions based on crisp or fuzzy numbers formalism not in all cases are relevant. The existing methods do not take into account the degree of con- fidence of respondents in their assessments. A fuzzy approach better describes the uncertainties associated with human perceptions and expectations. Linguis- tic values are more acceptable than crisp numbers. To consider the subjective natures of both service quality estimates and confidence degree in them, the two- component Z-numbers Z = (A, B) were used. Z-numbers express more adequately the opinion of consumers. The proposed and computationally efficient approach (Z-SERVQUAL, Z-IPA) allows to determine the quality of services and iden- tify the factors that required improvement and the areas for further development. The suggested method was applied to evaluate the service quality in small and medium-sized hotels in Turkey and Azerbaijan, illustrated by the example
