    Coarse-grained reconfigurable array architectures

    Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (CGRA) architectures accelerate the same inner loops that benefit from the high ILP support in VLIW architectures. By executing non-loop code on other cores, however, CGRAs can focus on such loops to execute them more efficiently. This chapter discusses the basic principles of CGRAs, and the wide range of design options available to a CGRA designer, covering a large number of existing CGRA designs. The impact of different options on flexibility, performance, and power-efficiency is discussed, as well as the need for compiler support. The ADRES CGRA design template is studied in more detail as a use case to illustrate the need for design space exploration, for compiler support and for the manual fine-tuning of source code

    An automated OpenCL FPGA compilation framework targeting a configurable, VLIW chip multiprocessor

    Modern system-on-chips augment their baseline CPU with coprocessors and accelerators to increase overall computational capacity and power efficiency, and thus have evolved into heterogeneous systems. Several languages have been developed to enable this paradigm shift, including CUDA and OpenCL. This thesis discusses a unified compilation environment to enable heterogeneous system design through the use of OpenCL and a customised VLIW chip multiprocessor (CMP) architecture, known as the LE1. An LLVM compilation framework was researched and a prototype developed to enable the execution of OpenCL applications on the LE1 CPU. The framework fully automates the compilation flow and supports work-item coalescing to better utilise the CPU cores and alleviate the effects of thread divergence. This thesis discusses in detail both the software stack and target hardware architecture and evaluates the scalability of the proposed framework on a highly precise cycle-accurate simulator. This is achieved through the execution of 12 benchmarks across 240 different machine configurations, as well as further results utilising an incomplete development branch of the compiler. It is shown that the problems generally scale well with the LE1 architecture, up to eight cores, when the memory system becomes a serious bottleneck. Results demonstrate superlinear performance on certain benchmarks (x9 for the bitonic sort benchmark with 8 dual-issue cores) with further improvements from compiler optimisations (x14 for bitonic with the same configuration

    Compiler-managed memory system for software-exposed architectures

Sophisticated techniques for ILP have boosted the ability of modern-day microprocessors to exploit ILP when available. Unfortunately, improvements in memory parallelism in microprocessors have lagged behind. This thesis explains why memory parallelism is hard to exploit in microprocessors and advocate bank-exposed architectures as an effective way to exploit more memory parallelism. Bank exposed architectures are a kind of software-exposed architecture: one in which the low level details of the hardware are visible to the software. In a bank-exposed architecture, the memory banks are visible to the software, enabling the compiler to exploit a high degree of memory parallelism in addition to ILP. Bank-exposed architectures can be employed by general-purpose processors, and by embedded chips, such as those used for digital-signal processing. This thesis presents Maps, an enabling compiler technology for bank-exposed architectures. Maps solves the problem of bank-disambiguation, i.e., how to distribute data in sequential programs among several banks to best exploit memory parallelism, while retaining the ability to disambiguate each data reference to a particular bank. Two methods for bank disambiguation are presented: equivalence-class unification and modulo unrolling. Taking a sequential program as input, a bank-disambiguation method produces two outputs: first, a distribution of each program object among the memory banks; and second, a bank number for every reference that can be proven to access a single, known bank for that data distribution. Finally, the thesis shows why non-disambiguated accesses are sometimes desirable. Dependences between disambiguated and non-disambiguated accesses are enforced through explicit synchronization and software serial ordering. The MIT Raw machine is an example of a software-exposed architecture. Raw exposes its ILP, memory and communication mechanisms. The Maps system has been implemented in the Raw compiler. Results on Raw using sequential codes demonstrate that using bank disambiguation in addition to ILP improves performance by a factor of 3 to 5 over using ILP alone.by Rajeev Barua.Ph.D

    Automatic Design of Efficient Application-centric Architectures.

    As the market for embedded devices continues to grow, the demand for high performance, low cost, and low power computation grows as well. Many embedded applications perform computationally intensive tasks such as processing streaming video or audio, wireless communication, or speech recognition and must be implemented within tight power budgets. Typically, general purpose processors are not able to meet these performance and power requirements. Custom hardware in the form of loop accelerators are often used to execute the compute-intensive portions of these applications because they can achieve significantly higher levels of performance and power efficiency. Automated hardware synthesis from high level specifications is a key technology used in designing these accelerators, because the resulting hardware is correct by construction, easing verification and greatly decreasing time-to-market in the quickly evolving embedded domain. In this dissertation, a compiler-directed approach is used to design a loop accelerator from a C specification and a throughput requirement. The compiler analyzes the loop and generates a virtual architecture containing sufficient resources to sustain the required throughput. Next, a software pipelining scheduler maps the operations in the loop to the virtual architecture. Finally, the accelerator datapath is derived from the resulting schedule. In this dissertation, synthesis of different types of loop accelerators is investigated. First, the system for synthesizing single loop accelerators is detailed. In particular, a scheduler is presented that is aware of the effects of its decisions on the resulting hardware, and attempts to minimize hardware cost. Second, synthesis of multifunction loop accelerators, or accelerators capable of executing multiple loops, is presented. Such accelerators exploit coarse-grained hardware sharing across loops in order to reduce overall cost. Finally, synthesis of post-programmable accelerators is presented, allowing changes to be made to the software after an accelerator has been created. The tradeoffs between the flexibility, cost, and energy efficiency of these different types of accelerators are investigated. Automatically synthesized loop accelerators are capable of achieving order-of-magnitude gains in performance, area efficiency, and power efficiency over processors, and programmable accelerators allow software changes while maintaining highly efficient levels of computation.Ph.D.Computer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     High level compilation for gate reconfigurable architectures

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2001.Includes bibliographical references (p. 205-215).A continuing exponential increase in the number of programmable elements is turning management of gate-reconfigurable architectures as "glue logic" into an intractable problem; it is past time to raise this abstraction level. The physical hardware in gate-reconfigurable architectures is all low level - individual wires, bit-level functions, and single bit registers - hence one should look to the fetch-decode-execute machinery of traditional computers for higher level abstractions. Ordinary computers have machine-level architectural mechanisms that interpret instructions - instructions that are generated by a high-level compiler. Efficiently moving up to the next abstraction level requires leveraging these mechanisms without introducing the overhead of machine-level interpretation. In this dissertation, I solve this fundamental problem by specializing architectural mechanisms with respect to input programs. This solution is the key to efficient compilation of high-level programs to gate reconfigurable architectures. My approach to specialization includes several novel techniques. I develop, with others, extensive bitwidth analyses that apply to registers, pointers, and arrays. I use pointer analysis and memory disambiguation to target devices with blocks of embedded memory. My approach to memory parallelization generates a spatial hierarchy that enables easier-to-synthesize logic state machines with smaller circuits and no long wires.(cont.) My space-time scheduling approach integrates the techniques of high-level synthesis with the static routing concepts developed for single-chip multiprocessors. Using DeepC, a prototype compiler demonstrating my thesis, I compile a new benchmark suite to Xilinx Virtex FPGAs. Resulting performance is comparable to a custom MIPS processor, with smaller area (40 percent on average), higher evaluation speeds (2.4x), and lower energy (18x) and energy-delay (45x). Specialization of advanced mechanisms results in additional speedup, scaling with hardware area, at the expense of power. For comparison, I also target IBM's standard cell SA-27E process and the RAW microprocessor.     Clustered VLIW architecture based on queue register files

    Institute for Computing Systems ArchitectureInstruction-level parallelism (ILP) is a set of hardware and software techniques that allow parallel execution of machine operations. Superscalar architectures rely most heavily upon hardware schemes to identify parallelism among operations. Although successful in terms of performance, the hardware complexity involved might limit the scalability of this model. VLIW architectures use a different approach to exploit ILP. In this case all data dependence analyses and scheduling of operations are performed at compile time, resulting in a simpler hardware organization. This allows the inclusion of a larger number of functional units (FUs) into a single chip. IN spite of this relative simplification, the scalability of VLIW architectures can be constrained by the size and number of ports of the register file. VLIW machines often use software pipelining techniques to improve the execution of loop structures, which can increase the register pressure. Furthermore, the access time of a register file can be compromised by the number of ports, causing a negative impact on the machine cycle time. For these reasons we understand that the benefits of having parallel FUs, which have motivated the investigation of alternative machine designs. This thesis presents a scalar VLIW architecture comprising clusters of FUs and private register files. Register files organised as queue structures are used as a mechanism for inter-cluster communication, allowing the enforcement of fixed latency in the process. This scheme presents better possibilities in terms of scalability as the size of the individual register files is not determined by the total number of FUs, suggesting that the silicon area may grow only linearly with respect to the total number of FUs. However, the effectiveness of such an organization depends on the efficiency of the code partitioning strategy. We have developed an algorithm for a clustered VLIW architecture integrating both software pipelining and code partitioning in a a single procedure. Experimental results show it may allow performance levels close to an unclustered machine without communication restraints. Finally, we have developed silicon area and cycle time models to quantify the scalability of performance and cost for this class of architecture

    Polymorphic Pipeline Array: A Flexible Multicore Accelerator for Mobile Multimedia Applications.

    Mobile computing in the form of smart phones, netbooks, and PDAs has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Moving ahead to the next generation of mobile devices, we believe that multimedia will become a more critical and product-differentiating feature. High definition audio and video as well as 3D graphics provide richer interfaces and compelling capabilities. However, these algorithms also bring different computational challenges than wireless signal processing. Multimedia algorithms are more complex featuring more control flow and variable computational requirements where execution time is not dominated by innermost vector loops. Further, data access is more complex where media applications typically operate on multi-dimensional vectors of data rather than single-dimensional vectors with simple strides. Thus, the design of current mobile platforms requires re-examination to account for these new application domains. In this dissertation, we focus on the design of a programmable, low-power accelerator for multimedia algorithms referred to as a Polymorphic Pipeline Array (PPA). The PPA design is inspired by coarse-grain reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs) that consist of an array of function units interconnected by a mesh style interconnect. The PPA improves upon CGRAs by attacking two major limitations: scalability and acceleration limited to innermost loops. The large number of resources are fully utilized by exploiting both Lne-grain instruction-level and coarse-grain pipeline parallelism, and the acceleration is extended beyond innermost loops to encompass the whole region of applications. Various compiler and architectural optimizations are presented for CGRAs that form the basic building blocks of PPA. Two compiler techniques are presented that systematically construct the schedule with intelligent heuristics. Modulo graph embedding leverages graph embedding technique for scheduling in CGRAs and edgecentric modulo scheduling provides a communication-oriented way to address the scheduling problem. For architectural improvement, a novel control path design is presented that leverages the token network of dataflow machines to reduce the instructionmemory power. The PPA is designed with flexibility and programmability as first-order requirements to enable the hardware to be dynamically customizable to the application.
