Determinant Factors of E-commerce Adoption by SMEs in Developing Country: Evidence from Indonesia

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to investigate those factors that influence SMEs in developing countries in adopting e-commerce. This study is motivated by the fact that the adoption of e-commerce by SMEs, especially in developing countries, is still very far behind the adoption by large companies. Yet to be able to survive in the new economic era, which is the information era; businesses, including SMEs, are forced to adopt e-commerce. Non-adopters will be left behind by the adopters. In addition, studies regarding e-commerce adoption by SMEs are rarely found. Therefore, the results of this study provide a timely understanding of e-commerce adoption by SMEs in developing countries. The model developed in this study is based on the TOE framework. Eleven variables are proposed as the factors that influence SMEs in adopting of e-commerce. These are organized into four groups, namely: technological factors, organizational factors, environmental factors and individual factors. Based on a survey of 292 Indonesian SMEs, it was found that perceived benefits, technology readiness, owners’ innovativeness, owners’ IT ability and owners’ IT experience are the determinant factors that influence Indonesian SMEs in their adopting e-commerce

Why should small firms adopt ebusiness? A framework for understanding the SME ebusiness context

    Get PDF
eBusiness research typically questions why small firms do not adopt these powerful technologies and suggests explanatory factors for these perceived shortcomings. This paper argues against the technological expansionist view by questioning why small firms should adopt eBusiness. Specifically, it proposes a new conceptualisation showing that each small firm has different circumstances and associated business goals, and that researchers and practitioners must convince each small firm why eBusiness should be used for its goals in preference to non-technology solutions. The paper also provides some preliminary insights, based on this view, into future theoretical and empirical directions to guide researchers who conduct small firm eBusiness adoption studies.<br /

Appropriating Value From CRS Ownership in the Airline Industry

    Get PDF
It is difficult for the firm competing through information technology (IT) resources to gain a sustainable advantage because systems are easy to imitate and often substitute resources are available to competitors. The innovator may be unable to appropriate all of the benefits from IT investments. Airlines have installed computerized reservations systems (CRSs) in travel agencies in order to appropriate the returns from their investments in information technology. The airlines expected to obtain a number of benefits from this strategy including increased efficiency, possible bias in favor of the CRS owner on the part of the travel agent, and fees from other airlines for making reservations for them. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the appropriation of value by CRS owners from deploying systems in travel agencies. These benefits, beyond fees from travel agents, should be seen in the vendor airline's market share between cities and in the overall performance of the airline at an industry level. This paper models airline performance as a function of CRS ownership at two levels: for selected city-pairs and at the overall level of the firm. The city-pair analysis employs a multinomial logit (MNL) market share model that analyzes five years of data on 72 city-pair routes. The industry model uses longitudinal data for a panel of ten airlines for twelve years. The results of both analyses support hypotheses that CRS ownership is positively related to airline performance. It appears that strong airlines have appropriated the benefits of their CRSs, turning them into highly specialized assets for further travel-related innovation. This work offers useful theoretical extensions and methodological approaches for the study of similar kinds of network technology innovations that are currently being deployed in association with electronic commerce on the Internet.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

This master's project aims to develop an innovative business plan that will allow the creation of a new company, named MK. The catering industry, like many others, has been benefiting from the digital transformation that is transforming the way companies deliver value and the way consumers relate to brands and their products. With professional exposure to the constant technological and digital transformation, we decided to analyze and design a plan that transforms the way consumers treat their daily routine and consume their meals. By combining experience, quality and a sense of opportunity, MK is able to innovatively meet the expectations of young adults living in Greater Lisbon, a generation that is distinguished by its demands, consumption habits and digital adaptability. Using the knowledge gained during my Master´s in Business Administration, we sought to apply key concepts and reference methodologies in order to analyze the Portuguese market and existing competitors, which, combined with market validation, served to design a marketing plan capable of to support the creation of this new business

USING FACET THEORY TO REVIEW THE IS SUCCESS LITERATURE

    Get PDF
This literature review study aimed at examining papers covering the IS Success research domain employing Facet Theory and its mapping tools. Facet Theory uses mapping sentences composed of facets that together represent all the plausible values of a universe or construct content. Forty three papers chosen by eight researchers were analyzed for similarity based on constructs included in their research models. In addition, constructs were coded for their relevance to the IS implementation timeline: before, during, after, and at maturity. In addition each paper was assigned a code calculated as the average position of its model constructs in the IS timeline. A simple exemplary mapping sentence was employed, based on the papers timeline index, and it was hypothesized that the IS timeline facet will demonstrate the axial topology. The results supported the hypothesis, showing that when ordered by their position in the IS timeline, papers are mapped employing an axial topology. It also showed that more papers focus on earlier stages of IS implementation rather than on the more mature stages. Furthermore, the SSA map obtained by the construct similarity index Sab allowed identification of primary IS Success research areas and lacunas. Being a Research in Progress, more work is under way, yet this work in progress has already demonstrated that Facet Theory can serve as an adequate yet not commonly use literature review and literature meta-analysis tool
