POETIC LANGUAGE IN NAZARETHâS âLOVE HURTSâ
This study is concerned with how language is poetically used in one of Nazarethâs song lyrics,
âLove Hurtsâ. The language encompasses a series of figures of speech. This study was
performed as an alternative practice in teaching English poetry. Figures of speech intrinsically
compose English poetry. Because the figures of speech contain implied meaning, they might not
be easily meaningful to a reader of the lyric. This study is intended to describe the figures of
speech so that the language becomes more understandable to the reader. This study applies a
textual analysis, and it adopts Leechâs linguistic guide to English poetry. The linguistic guide
includes absurdity in the language of poetry; transference of meaning; and over and counter
statement. The discussion works on each of the lyricâs lines, and it results in the series of figures
of speech, comprising oxymoron, paradox, synecdoche, metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole, litotes,
and irony. The figures of speech indicate that the language is arranged to sweetly sound a
melody. Besides that, the figures of speech indicate that the language is also used figuratively to
contain the meaning. In other words, in the lyric, the language was used not only to be sung
melodically, but it was also used to be written poetically

person, place or thing) as its head word and includes all additional information related to that
noun. This discourse analysis will investigate the types of nominal group construction which is
mostly found in the studentsâ written text and the tendencies of the students in applying the
nominal groups in their written texts. The unit analysis of this study is nominal groups written
by the students. The students here refer to the fourth semester students of English Department of
Tidar University (Universitas Tidar) who join writing class. Following Gerot and Wignellâs
theory (1994), most of the students apply Deictic-Ephitet-Thing construction in their texts.
Based on the data analysis, it is suggested that the lecturers should introduce various

THE ART OF RHETORIC USING STYLISTIC DEVICES IN WORLD UNIVERSITIES DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP: A Study of Pragmatics
Debating is recognized as a way of doing persuasion in speech that deals with four points of
debate pillars, for instance: assertion, reasoning, evidence, and link back. There are two
formats on parliamentary debating competitions; Asian and British. The format of worlds is
British Parliamentary debate, which consists of eight debaters divided into four teams, two on
the pro-position and other two on the opposition, and allows debaters 15 minutes of preparation
and doing the case building before engaging in the round (Harvey-Smith, 2011; Johnson, 2009;
Lising, 2010). Over past few years, every countryâs debater champions have been gathered and
involved in a high level of debate atmosphere to compete each other as their countryâs
representatives to have worldsâ champion title. In conjunction to the glance of forewords,
researcher will analyze annual world most prestigious debating championship, WUDC 2016,
which took place in Thessaloniki, Greece. The study will use descriptive qualitative method. The
source of this research is taken from video streaming on Youtube that shows ESL grand final
round between University of Indonesia team A (Indonesia) as Prime Minister (PM) and RWTH
Aachen team A (Germany) as leader of opposition (LO). This approach is intended to answer:
(1) What stylistic devices appear in World Universities Debating Championship 2016? (2) What
kinds of illocutionary act appear and how its perlocutionary impacts the opponent sideâs
respond that results in rebuttal? This analysis is based on Aristotle (1991) and Searle (1979)

THE FUNCTIONS OF PHATIC EXPRESSIONS IN TRADITIONAL SELLING AND BUYING
Selling and buying is a social praxis commonly found in daily activities. Traditional selling
and buying is generally conducted in local language or dialect. Banyumas dialect or
Banyumasan is a non-standard variation of Javanese language spoken along the Serayu River.
Traditional selling and buying in Banyumas, consequently, is conducted in Banyumas dialect.
Language plays important role in traditional selling and buying. In addition to its referential
functions, phatic functions emerge from its practice. Referential functions are realized when
language is used to achieve referential things such as goods and services. On the other hand,
phatic functions are gained when language is used to initiate, maintain, and end a
conversation. Phatic functions are very specific to traditional selling and buying which is rarely
found in modern selling and buying. In modern selling and buying, seller and buyer may not be
involved in a real conversation since goods exchange still occurs without any language
exchange. This article proves the functions of phatic expressions in traditional selling and
buying. It employs qualitative research method and conversational analysis to find the functions
of phatic expressions. Based on the analysis, phatic expressions in traditional selling and
buying in Banyumas dialect are mainly functioned for greeting, thanking, asking condition,
showing surprise, emphasizing, and ending a conversation

As one of the micro skills of speaking ability, the role of pronunciation is quite essentialfor it differentiates one meaning to another. The early childhood acquisition of a secondlanguage pronunciation is found to have fewer constraints than those who learn the second
language in their adolescence or adult time. The aim of this study is to answer this inquiry:What is the role of awareness and phonological working memory in the adult acquisition ofsecond language?(2) How are awareness and phonological working memory taken into accountin teaching pronunciation for adult? The data collected is in the form of autonomousacquisition cases (depicted in the life story of two postgraduate students of Sanata DharmaUniversity who possess native-like speaking performance: Marschall Eirence Metekohy andDita Anissa Johar) as well as guided acquisition (portrayed in the result of the implementationof Oral Diary as a teaching pronunciation technique for EFL students of grade XI SMA N 2
Bantul). The participants of this study had completed an awareness information questionnaire, and a learning outcomes questionnaire. In terms of validity and reliability, triangulationscaffolds the validation using Pearsonâs Coefficient Correlation. It employs the journalistic andstatistical analysis. The result shows that awareness is in line with the activation of long-termmemory and thus becomes one salient factor to improve and to robustly strengthen theremembrance of the correct pronunciation. Henceforth, a further research in designing atechnique for teaching pronunciation which stimulates preponderance awareness is ardentlysuggested
