Case-based analysis in user requirements modelling for knowledge construction
Context: Learning can be regarded as knowledge construction in which prior knowledge and experience
serve as basis for the learners to expand their knowledge base. Such a process of knowledge construction
has to take place continuously in order to enhance the learners’ competence in a competitive working
environment. As the information consumers, the individual users demand personalised information provision
which meets their own specific purposes, goals, and expectations.
Objectives: The current methods in requirements engineering are capable of modelling the common
user’s behaviour in the domain of knowledge construction. The users’ requirements can be represented
as a case in the defined structure which can be reasoned to enable the requirements analysis. Such analysis
needs to be enhanced so that personalised information provision can be tackled and modelled. However,
there is a lack of suitable modelling methods to achieve this end. This paper presents a new
ontological method for capturing individual user’s requirements and transforming the requirements onto
personalised information provision specifications. Hence the right information can be provided to the
right user for the right purpose.
Method: An experiment was conducted based on the qualitative method. A medium size of group of users
participated to validate the method and its techniques, i.e. articulates, maps, configures, and learning content.
The results were used as the feedback for the improvement.
Result: The research work has produced an ontology model with a set of techniques which support the
functions for profiling user’s requirements, reasoning requirements patterns, generating workflow from
norms, and formulating information provision specifications.
Conclusion: The current requirements engineering approaches provide the methodical capability for
developing solutions. Our research outcome, i.e. the ontology model with the techniques, can further
enhance the RE approaches for modelling the individual user’s needs and discovering the user’s
requirements
Simulating Light-Weight Personalised Recommender Systems in Learning Networks: A Case for Pedagogy-Oriented and Rating-Based Hybrid Recommendation Strategies
Recommender systems for e-learning demand specific pedagogy-oriented and hybrid recommendation strategies. Current systems are often based on time-consuming, top down information provisioning combined with intensive data-mining collaborative filtering approaches. However, such systems do not seem appropriate for Learning Networks where distributed information can often not be identified beforehand. Providing sound way-finding support for lifelong learners in Learning Networks requires dedicated personalised recommender systems (PRS), that offer the learners customised advise on which learning actions or programs to study next. Such systems should also be practically feasible and be developed with minimized effort. Currently, such so called light-weight PRS systems are scarcely available. This study shows that simulation studies can support the analysis and optimisation of PRS requirements prior to starting the costly process of their development, and practical implementation (including testing and revision) during field experiments in real-life learning situations. This simulation study confirms that providing recommendations leads towards more effective, more satisfied, and faster goal achievement. Furthermore, this study reveals that a light-weight hybrid PRS-system based on ratings is a good alternative for an ontology-based system, in particular for low-level goal achievement. Finally, it is found that rating-based light-weight hybrid PRS-systems enable more effective, more satisfied, and faster goal attainment than peer-based light-weight hybrid PRS-systems (incorporating collaborative techniques without rating).Recommendation Strategy; Simulation Study; Way-Finding; Collaborative Filtering; Rating
Developing social innovators and social entrepreneurs through a creative and innovative programme
In today's increasingly interdependent and rapidly changing world, understanding the transformations of the 21st century that are characterized by uneven development, accelerated globalization, economic uncertainty, entrenched and complex social problems requires an academic approach that is interdisciplinary and focused on both innovation and commercialisation. This paper will focus on the development of a Social Venture Builder (SVB) programme at the University of Northampton; an example of a course that aims to develop the skills of the innovators and entrepreneurs whilst at the same time developing sustainable social ventures. We will place this in a wider context of the University of Northampton’s institution wide strategy around social enterprise and how this is developing from one that concentrates on developing social enterprises to a more embedded strategy that develops creative and socially entrepreneurial students. Ultimately, as a University we believe we have to develop a creative learning environment that nurtures talent as well as engages with communities and neighbourhoods whilst connecting us with other local, regional, national and international networks

Technology-enhanced Personalised Learning: Untangling the Evidence
Technology-enhanced personalised learning is not yet common in Germany, which is why we have tasked scientists with summarising the current status of international research on the matter. This study demonstrates the great potential of technology in implementing effective personalised learning. Nevertheless, it has not been assessed yet whether the practical implementation actually works: Even in countries such as the U.S., which lead the way in using techology in classroom settings, hardly any evaluation studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of technology-enhanced personalised learning. In the light of the above, the authors make recommendations for actions to be taken in Germany to make best use of the potential of technology in providing individual support and guidance to students
Case studies of personalized learning
Deliverable 4.1, Literature review of personalised learning and the Cloud, started with an evaluation and synthesis of the definitions of personalized learning, followed by an analysis of how this is implemented in a method (e-learning vs. i-learning, m-learning and u-learning), learning approach and the appropriate didactic process, based on adapted didactic theories.
From this research a list of criteria was created needed to implement personalised learning onto the learner of the future.
This list of criteria is the basis for the analysis of all case studies investigated. – as well to the learning process as the learning place.
In total 60 case studies (all 59 case studies mentioned in D6.4 Education on the Cloud 2015 + one extra) were analysed. The case studies were compared with the list of criteria, and a score was calculated. As a result, the best examples could be retained.
On average most case studies were good on: taking different learning methods into account, interactivity and accessibility and usability of learning materials for everyone. All had a real formal education content, thus aiming at the core-curriculum, valuing previous knowledge, competences, life and work skills, also informal. Also the availability of an instructor / tutor or other network of peers, experts and teachers to guide and support the learning is common.
On the other hand, most case studies lack diagnostics tests as well at the start (diagnostic entry test), during the personalized learning trajectory and at the end (assessment at the end). Also most do not include non-formal and informal learning aspects. And the ownership of personalized learning is not in the hands of the learner.
Five of the 60 case studies can as a result be considered as very good examples of real personalized learning
