    Spoken content retrieval: A survey of techniques and technologies

    Speech media, that is, digital audio and video containing spoken content, has blossomed in recent years. Large collections are accruing on the Internet as well as in private and enterprise settings. This growth has motivated extensive research on techniques and technologies that facilitate reliable indexing and retrieval. Spoken content retrieval (SCR) requires the combination of audio and speech processing technologies with methods from information retrieval (IR). SCR research initially investigated planned speech structured in document-like units, but has subsequently shifted focus to more informal spoken content produced spontaneously, outside of the studio and in conversational settings. This survey provides an overview of the field of SCR encompassing component technologies, the relationship of SCR to text IR and automatic speech recognition and user interaction issues. It is aimed at researchers with backgrounds in speech technology or IR who are seeking deeper insight on how these fields are integrated to support research and development, thus addressing the core challenges of SCR

    Search on speech from spoken queries: the Multi-domain International ALBAYZIN 2018 Query-by-Example Spoken Term Detection Evaluation

    [Abstract] The huge amount of information stored in audio and video repositories makes search on speech (SoS) a priority area nowadays. Within SoS, Query-by-Example Spoken Term Detection (QbE STD) aims to retrieve data from a speech repository given a spoken query. Research on this area is continuously fostered with the organization of QbE STD evaluations. This paper presents a multi-domain internationally open evaluation for QbE STD in Spanish. The evaluation aims at retrieving the speech files that contain the queries, providing their start and end times, and a score that reflects the confidence given to the detection. Three different Spanish speech databases that encompass different domains have been employed in the evaluation: MAVIR database, which comprises a set of talks from workshops; RTVE database, which includes broadcast television (TV) shows; and COREMAH database, which contains 2-people spontaneous speech conversations about different topics. The evaluation has been designed carefully so that several analyses of the main results can be carried out. We present the evaluation itself, the three databases, the evaluation metrics, the systems submitted to the evaluation, the results, and the detailed post-evaluation analyses based on some query properties (within-vocabulary/out-of-vocabulary queries, single-word/multi-word queries, and native/foreign queries). Fusion results of the primary systems submitted to the evaluation are also presented. Three different teams took part in the evaluation, and ten different systems were submitted. The results suggest that the QbE STD task is still in progress, and the performance of these systems is highly sensitive to changes in the data domain.     Holistic Vocabulary Independent Spoken Term Detection

    Within this thesis, we aim at designing a loosely coupled holistic system for Spoken Term Detection (STD) on heterogeneous German broadcast data in selected application scenarios. Starting from STD on the 1-best output of a word-based speech recognizer, we study the performance of several subword units for vocabulary independent STD on a linguistically and acoustically challenging German corpus. We explore the typical error sources in subword STD, and find that they differ from the error sources in word-based speech search. We select, extend and combine a set of state-of-the-art methods for error compensation in STD in order to explicitly merge the corresponding STD error spaces through anchor-based approximate lattice retrieval. Novel methods for STD result verification are proposed in order to increase retrieval precision by exploiting external knowledge at search time. Error-compensating methods for STD typically suffer from high response times on large scale databases, and we propose scalable approaches suitable for large corpora. Highest STD accuracy is obtained by combining anchor-based approximate retrieval from both syllable lattice ASR and syllabified word ASR into a hybrid STD system, and pruning the result list using external knowledge with hybrid contextual and anti-query verification.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt ein lose gekoppeltes, ganzheitliches System zur Sprachsuche auf heterogenenen deutschen Sprachdaten in unterschiedlichen Anwendungsszenarien. Ausgehend von einer wortbasierten Sprachsuche auf dem Transkript eines aktuellen Wort-Erkenners werden zunĂ€chst unterschiedliche Subwort-Einheiten fĂŒr die vokabularunabhĂ€ngige Sprachsuche auf deutschen Daten untersucht. Auf dieser Basis werden die typischen Fehlerquellen in der Subwort-basierten Sprachsuche analysiert. Diese Fehlerquellen unterscheiden sich vom Fall der klassichen Suche im Worttranskript und mĂŒssen explizit adressiert werden. Die explizite Kompensation der unterschiedlichen Fehlerquellen erfolgt durch einen neuartigen hybriden Ansatz zur effizienten Ankerbasierten unscharfen Wortgraph-Suche. DarĂŒber hinaus werden neuartige Methoden zur Verifikation von Suchergebnissen vorgestellt, die zur Suchzeit verfĂŒgbares externes Wissen einbeziehen. Alle vorgestellten Verfahren werden auf einem umfangreichen Satz von deutschen Fernsehdaten mit Fokus auf ausgewĂ€hlte, reprĂ€sentative Einsatzszenarien evaluiert. Da Methoden zur Fehlerkompensation in der Sprachsuchforschung typischerweise zu hohen Laufzeiten bei der Suche in großen Archiven fĂŒhren, werden insbesondere auch Szenarien mit sehr großen Datenmengen betrachtet. Die höchste Suchleistung fĂŒr Archive mittlerer GrĂ¶ĂŸe wird durch eine unscharfe und Anker-basierte Suche auf einem hybriden Index aus Silben-Wortgraphen und silbifizierter Wort-Erkennung erreicht, bei der die Suchergebnisse mit hybrider Verifikation bereinigt werden

    Spoken command recognition for robotics

    In this thesis, I investigate spoken command recognition technology for robotics. While high robustness is expected, the distant and noisy conditions in which the system has to operate make the task very challenging. Unlike commercial systems which all rely on a "wake-up" word to initiate the interaction, the pipeline proposed here directly detect and recognizes commands from the continuous audio stream. In order to keep the task manageable despite low-resource conditions, I propose to focus on a limited set of commands, thus trading off flexibility of the system against robustness. Domain and speaker adaptation strategies based on a multi-task regularization paradigm are first explored. More precisely, two different methods are proposed which rely on a tied loss function which penalizes the distance between the output of several networks. The first method considers each speaker or domain as a task. A canonical task-independent network is jointly trained with task-dependent models, allowing both types of networks to improve by learning from one another. While an improvement of 3.2% on the frame error rate (FER) of the task-independent network is obtained, this only partially carried over to the phone error rate (PER), with 1.5% of improvement. Similarly, a second method explored the parallel training of the canonical network with a privileged model having access to i-vectors. This method proved less effective with only 1.2% of improvement on the FER. In order to make the developed technology more accessible, I also investigated the use of a sequence-to-sequence (S2S) architecture for command classification. The use of an attention-based encoder-decoder model reduced the classification error by 40% relative to a strong convolutional neural network (CNN)-hidden Markov model (HMM) baseline, showing the relevance of S2S architectures in such context. In order to improve the flexibility of the trained system, I also explored strategies for few-shot learning, which allow to extend the set of commands with minimum requirements in terms of data. Retraining a model on the combination of original and new commands, I managed to achieve 40.5% of accuracy on the new commands with only 10 examples for each of them. This scores goes up to 81.5% of accuracy with a larger set of 100 examples per new command. An alternative strategy, based on model adaptation achieved even better scores, with 68.8% and 88.4% of accuracy with 10 and 100 examples respectively, while being faster to train. This high performance is obtained at the expense of the original categories though, on which the accuracy deteriorated. Those results are very promising as the methods allow to easily extend an existing S2S model with minimal resources. Finally, a full spoken command recognition system (named iCubrec) has been developed for the iCub platform. The pipeline relies on a voice activity detection (VAD) system to propose a fully hand-free experience. By segmenting only regions that are likely to contain commands, the VAD module also allows to reduce greatly the computational cost of the pipeline. Command candidates are then passed to the deep neural network (DNN)-HMM command recognition system for transcription. The VoCub dataset has been specifically gathered to train a DNN-based acoustic model for our task. Through multi-condition training with the CHiME4 dataset, an accuracy of 94.5% is reached on VoCub test set. A filler model, complemented by a rejection mechanism based on a confidence score, is finally added to the system to reject non-command speech in a live demonstration of the system

    Automatic Conversion of Emotions in Speech within a Speaker Independent Framework

    Emotions in speech are a fundamental part of a natural dialog. In everyday life, vocal interaction with people often implies emotions as an intrinsic part of the conversation to a greater or lesser extent. Thus, the inclusion of emotions in human-machine dialog systems is crucial to achieve an acceptable degree of naturalness in the communication. This thesis focuses on automatic emotion conversion of speech, a technique whose aim is to transform an utterance produced in neutral style to a certain emotion state in a speaker independent context. Conversion of emotions represents a challenge in the sense that emotions a affect significantly all the parts of the human vocal production system, and in the conversion process all these factors must be taken into account carefully. The techniques used in the literature are based on voice conversion approaches, with minor modifications to create the sensation of emotion. In this thesis, the idea of voice conversion systems is used as well, but the usual regression process is divided in a two-step procedure that provides additional speaker normalization to remove the intrinsic speaker dependency of this kind of systems, using vocal tract length normalization as a pre-processing technique. In addition, a new method to convert the duration trend of the utterance and the intonation contour is proposed, taking into account the contextual information
