Where and Who? Automatic Semantic-Aware Person Composition

Image compositing is a method used to generate realistic yet fake imagery by inserting contents from one image to another. Previous work in compositing has focused on improving appearance compatibility of a user selected foreground segment and a background image (i.e. color and illumination consistency). In this work, we instead develop a fully automated compositing model that additionally learns to select and transform compatible foreground segments from a large collection given only an input image background. To simplify the task, we restrict our problem by focusing on human instance composition, because human segments exhibit strong correlations with their background and because of the availability of large annotated data. We develop a novel branching Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that jointly predicts candidate person locations given a background image. We then use pre-trained deep feature representations to retrieve person instances from a large segment database. Experimental results show that our model can generate composite images that look visually convincing. We also develop a user interface to demonstrate the potential application of our method.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

Space shuttle OMS helium regulator design and development

    Get PDF
Analysis, design, fabrication and design verification testing was conducted on the technological feasiblity of the helium pressurization regulator for the space shuttle orbital maneuvering system application. A prototype regulator was fabricated which was a single-stage design featuring the most reliable and lowest cost concept. A tradeoff study on regulator concepts indicated that a single-stage regulator with a lever arm between the valve and the actuator section would offer significant weight savings. Damping concepts were tested to determine the amount of damping required to restrict actuator travel during vibration. Component design parameters such as spring rates, effective area, contamination cutting, and damping were determined by test prior to regulator final assembly. The unit was subjected to performance testing at widely ranging flow rates, temperatures, inlet pressures, and random vibration levels. A test plan for propellant compatibility and extended life tests is included

COMPLEMENTARY USE OF DESIGN METHODOLOGIES IN EDUCATIONAL ENGINEERING DESIGN PROJECTS: A CASE STUDY

    Get PDF
The challenge of a nowadays well-grounded engineering education is preparing industry ready graduates, that is, to provide students with the skills to master the complexity of products in terms of innovation, invention and problem solving combined with soft skills abilities. This addresses particularly the engineering design education, which in general should be mainly based on practical studies represented by engineering design projects. In order to supply industry with work-ready practitioners, the effectiveness and efficacy of design education respectively design projects is a crucial aspect. This article presents some findings of an efficient use of design methodologies and techniques when carrying through design projects in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at the University of Applied Sciences, Deggendorf, Germany. Engineering design projects are compulsory for students within their curriculum. The projects aim at fostering and stimulating students creativity by means of a complementary use of design methodologies and techniques. By taking advantage of this approach the systematic generation of ideas in the course of a design project is presented, which eventually led to the development of an innovative product

Concrete Bridge Girders with Exposed Flexural Reinforcement

    Get PDF
Reinforced concrete highway bridge girders are regularly repaired by replacing deteriorated concrete with new concrete, temporarily exposing the flexural reinforcement. The absence of bond between the concrete and steel at this stage makes it difficult to compute the flexural capacity and the current code criteria provide no guidance to assist practitioners. The research reported in this thesis rectifies this knowledge gap. A thorough examination is presented of experimental and analytical investigations by others to determine the typical behaviour, including probable failure modes, of reinforced concrete specimens with exposed flexural reinforcement. Based on these findings, two analytical approaches are developed to predict the longest length of flexural reinforcement that could be exposed that ensures a girder will still exhibit a ductile failure with no reduction in yield capacity. The Strain Compatibility Analysis derived by Harris was enhanced to involve realistic concrete stress-strain relationships and was validated experimentally using five 4-metre T-section specimens subjected to simultaneous point and uniformly distributed loading. A Strut-and Tie Analysis was also derived for this generic loading condition that could only be indirectly validated experimentally. The ratios of the test failure load to the failure load predicted using the Strain Compatibility Analysis had a mean value of 1.00 and a standard deviation of 0.068

An Investigation of Skill Acquisition under Conditions of Augmented Reality

    Get PDF
Augmented reality is a virtual environment that integrates rendered content with the experience of the real world. There is evidence suggesting that augmented reality provides for important spatial constancy of objects relative to the real world coordinate system and that this quality contributes to rapid skill acquisition. The qualities of simulation, through the use of augmented reality, may be incorporated into actual job activities to produce a condition of just-in-time learning. This may make possible the rapid acquisition of information and reliable completion of novel or infrequently performed tasks by individuals possessing a basic skill-set. The purpose of this research has been to investigate the degree to which the acquisition of a skill is enhanced through the use of an augmented reality training device

Representative Benchmark for Concurrent Product and Process Configuration Problem: Definitions and Some Problem Instances

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper considers the Optimization of Concurrent Product and Process Configuration problems (O-CPPC) that satisfy various number of criteria, which rely on the customer’s requirements and the objectives of the company. Various works have proposed evolutionary optimization algorithms dedicated to this concurrent configuration problem with generic model propositions due to this paper is relevant to the evaluation of these optimization algorithms. The aim of this paper is to define a set of instances of the generic model that represent a large family of problems. First, a background of the Optimization of Concurrent Product and Process Configuration problems is introduced. Next, some basic definitions of an O-CPPC generic model are analyzed. Then, the main general parameters to define an instance are presented (Product Structure, Process Structure, Model Size and Model Constraint Density) in order to propose some general evaluation tests. And finally, to be consistent with the previous works, some basic cases are described to show how to deal with this kind of problem in an organized way
