    Get PDF
Site diversity is one of the Fading Mitigation Techniques (FMT) that is a base system design on the nature of rain rate that change to the time and space. However, to get appropriate site diversity needs deep knowledges about rain rate dynamic and statistical characteristic. In this research, rain rate space-time series modeling in 4 rain gauges location studied by using Vector AR (VAR) model. To validate VAR model, it used 3 methods; ecdf graphic comparison, qqplot method and model residual analysis. The result showed that VAR model is correct and appropriate model for rain rate space time series modeling in 4 rain gauges location. These VAR models have good accuracy with Spatial RMSE Mean between 0.273 - 0.763

Fluid Solver Independent Hybrid Methods for Multiscale Kinetic equations

In some recent works [G. Dimarco, L. Pareschi, Hybrid multiscale methods I. Hyperbolic Relaxation Problems, Comm. Math. Sci., 1, (2006), pp. 155-177], [G. Dimarco, L. Pareschi, Hybrid multiscale methods II. Kinetic equations, SIAM Multiscale Modeling and Simulation Vol 6., No 4,pp. 1169-1197, (2008)] we developed a general framework for the construction of hybrid algorithms which are able to face efficiently the multiscale nature of some hyperbolic and kinetic problems. Here, at variance with respect to the previous methods, we construct a method form-fitting to any type of finite volume or finite difference scheme for the reduced equilibrium system. Thanks to the coupling of Monte Carlo techniques for the solution of the kinetic equations with macroscopic methods for the limiting fluid equations, we show how it is possible to solve multiscale fluid dynamic phenomena faster with respect to traditional deterministic/stochastic methods for the full kinetic equations. In addition, due to the hybrid nature of the schemes, the numerical solution is affected by less fluctuations when compared to standard Monte Carlo schemes. Applications to the Boltzmann-BGK equation are presented to show the performance of the new methods in comparison with classical approaches used in the simulation of kinetic equations.Comment: 31 page

Calculation of rotor impedance for use in design analysis of helicopter airframe vibrations

    Get PDF
Excessive vibration is one of the most prevalent technical obstacles encountered in the development of new rotorcraft. The inability to predict these vibrations is primarily due to deficiencies in analysis and simulation tools. The Langley Rotorcraft Structural Dynamics Program was instituted in 1984 to meet long term industry needs in the area of rotorcraft vibration prediction. As a part of the Langley program, this research endeavors to develop an efficient means of coupling the rotor to the airframe for preliminary design analysis of helicopter airframe vibrations. The main effort was to modify the existing computer program for modeling the dynamic and aerodynamic behavior of rotorcraft called DYSCO (DYnamic System COupler) to calculate the rotor impedance. DYSCO was recently developed for the U.S. Army and has proven to be adaptable for the inclusion of new solution methods. The solution procedure developed to use DYSCO for the calculation of rotor impedance is presented. Verification of the procedure by comparison with a known solution for a simple wind turbine model is about 75 percent completed, and initial results are encouraging. After the wind turbine impedance is confirmed, the verification effort will continue by comparison to solutions of a more sophisticated rotorcraft model. Future work includes determination of the sensitivity of the rotorcraft airframe vibrations to helicopter flight conditions and rotor modeling assumptions. When completed, this research will ascertain the feasibility and efficiency of the impedance matching method of rotor-airframe coupling for use in the analysis of airframe vibrations during the preliminary rotorcraft design process

The AGN Luminosity Fraction in Merging Galaxies

Galaxy mergers are key events in galaxy evolution, often causing massive starbursts and fueling active galactic nuclei (AGN). In these highly dynamic systems, it is not yet precisely known how much starbursts and AGN respectively contribute to the total luminosity, at what interaction stages they occur, and how long they persist. Here we estimate the fraction of the bolometric infrared (IR) luminosity that can be attributed to AGN by measuring and modeling the full ultraviolet to far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in up to 33 broad bands for 24 merging galaxies with the Code for Investigating Galaxy Emission. In addition to a sample of 12 confirmed AGN in late-stage mergers, found in the InfraredInfrared ArrayArray SatelliteSatellite Revised Bright Galaxy Sample or Faint Source Catalog, our sample includes a comparison sample of 12 galaxy mergers from the SpitzerSpitzer Interacting Galaxies Survey, mostly early-stage. We perform identical SED modeling of simulated mergers to validate our methods, and we supplement the SED data with mid-IR spectra of diagnostic lines obtained with SpitzerSpitzer InfraRed Spectrograph. The estimated AGN contributions to the IR luminosities vary from system to system from 0% up to 91% but are significantly greater in the later-stage, more luminous mergers, consistent with what is known about galaxy evolution and AGN triggering.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure

Construction of dynamic stochastic simulation models using knowledge-based techniques

    Get PDF
Over the past three decades, computer-based simulation models have proven themselves to be cost-effective alternatives to the more structured deterministic methods of systems analysis. During this time, many techniques, tools and languages for constructing computer-based simulation models have been developed. More recently, advances in knowledge-based system technology have led many researchers to note the similarities between knowledge-based programming and simulation technologies and to investigate the potential application of knowledge-based programming techniques to simulation modeling. The integration of conventional simulation techniques with knowledge-based programming techniques is discussed to provide a development environment for constructing knowledge-based simulation models. A comparison of the techniques used in the construction of dynamic stochastic simulation models and those used in the construction of knowledge-based systems provides the requirements for the environment. This leads to the design and implementation of a knowledge-based simulation development environment. These techniques were used in the construction of several knowledge-based simulation models including the Advanced Launch System Model (ALSYM)

A new algorithm for modeling friction in dynamic mechanical systems

    Get PDF
A method of modeling friction forces that impede the motion of parts of dynamic mechanical systems is described. Conventional methods in which the friction effect is assumed a constant force, or torque, in a direction opposite to the relative motion, are applicable only to those cases where applied forces are large in comparison to the friction, and where there is little interest in system behavior close to the times of transitions through zero velocity. An algorithm is described that provides accurate determination of friction forces over a wide range of applied force and velocity conditions. The method avoids the simulation errors resulting from a finite integration interval used in connection with a conventional friction model, as is the case in many digital computer-based simulations. The algorithm incorporates a predictive calculation based on initial conditions of motion, externally applied forces, inertia, and integration step size. The predictive calculation in connection with an external integration process provides an accurate determination of both static and Coulomb friction forces and resulting motions in dynamic simulations. Accuracy of the results is improved over that obtained with conventional methods and a relatively large integration step size is permitted. A function block for incorporation in a specific simulation program is described. The general form of the algorithm facilitates implementation with various programming languages such as FORTRAN or C, as well as with other simulation programs

Heuristic optimization of supplementary controller for VSC-HVDC/AC interconnected grids considering PLL

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new approach to enhance the dynamic responses of AGC in power systems by means of heuristic optimization of VSC-HVDC supplementary controllers. The upcoming power electronics-based VSC-HVDC transmission systems offer new features that would be advantageous for improving the frequency control and thus for enhancing the stability of the transmission grids. In this paper, the parameters of the proposed control modulation are tuned using Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing methods. The performance of the proposed intelligent based tuning approach is assessed through MATLAB simulations for an AC/DC interconnected system. For the sake of detailed analysis, the effects of PLL and frequency measurements are also included in the VSC-HVDC system modeling. Furthermore, to show merits of the proposed strategy, a comparison between AC and DC transmissions is presented.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Modeling and Simulation Techniques Used in High Strain Rate Projectile Impact

    Get PDF
A series of computational models and simulations were conducted for determining the dynamic responses of a solid metal projectile impacting a target under a prescribed high strain rate loading scenario in three-dimensional space. The focus of this study was placed on two different modeling techniques within finite element analysis available in the Abaqus software suite. The first analysis technique relied heavily on more traditional Lagrangian analysis methods utilizing a fixed mesh, while still taking advantage of the finite difference integration present under the explicit analysis approach. A symmetry reduced model using the Lagrangian coordinate system was also developed for comparison in physical and computational performance. The second analysis technique relied on a mixed model that still made use of some Lagrangian modeling, but included smoothed particle hydrodynamics techniques as well, which are mesh free. The inclusion of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics was intended to address some of the known issues in Lagrangian analysis under high displacement and deformation. A comparison of the models was first performed against experimental results as a validation of the models, then the models were compared against each other based on closeness to experimentation and computational performance
