Stochastic analysis of an error power ratio scheme applied to the affine combination of two LMS adaptive filters
The affine combination of two adaptive filters that simultaneously adapt on the same inputs has been actively investigated. In these structures, the filter outputs are linearly combined to yield a performance that is better than that of either filter. Various decision rules can be used to determine the time-varying parameter for combining the filter outputs. A recently proposed scheme based on the ratio of error powers of the two filters has been shown by simulation to achieve nearly optimum performance. The purpose of this paper is to present a first analysis of the statistical behavior of this error power scheme for white Gaussian inputs. Expressions are derived for the mean behavior of the combination parameter and for the adaptive weight mean-square deviation. Monte Carlo simulations show good to excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions
An affine combination of two LMS adaptive filters - Transient mean-square analysis
This paper studies the statistical behavior of an affine combination of the outputs of two LMS adaptive filters that simultaneously adapt using the same white Gaussian inputs. The purpose of the combination is to obtain an LMS adaptive filter with fast convergence and small steady-state mean-square deviation (MSD). The linear combination studied is a generalization of the convex combination, in which the combination factor is restricted to the interval . The viewpoint is taken that each of the two filters produces dependent estimates of the unknown channel. Thus, there exists a sequence of optimal affine combining coefficients which minimizes the MSE. First, the optimal unrealizable affine combiner is studied and provides the best possible performance for this class. Then two new schemes are proposed for practical applications. The mean-square performances are analyzed and validated by Monte Carlo simulations. With proper design, the two practical schemes yield an overall MSD that is usually less than the MSD's of either filter
Adaptive Mixture Methods Based on Bregman Divergences
We investigate adaptive mixture methods that linearly combine outputs of
constituent filters running in parallel to model a desired signal. We use
"Bregman divergences" and obtain certain multiplicative updates to train the
linear combination weights under an affine constraint or without any
constraints. We use unnormalized relative entropy and relative entropy to
define two different Bregman divergences that produce an unnormalized
exponentiated gradient update and a normalized exponentiated gradient update on
the mixture weights, respectively. We then carry out the mean and the
mean-square transient analysis of these adaptive algorithms when they are used
to combine outputs of constituent filters. We illustrate the accuracy of
our results and demonstrate the effectiveness of these updates for sparse
mixture systems.Comment: Submitted to Digital Signal Processing, Elsevier; IEEE.or
Sharp Oracle Inequalities for Aggregation of Affine Estimators
We consider the problem of combining a (possibly uncountably infinite) set of
affine estimators in non-parametric regression model with heteroscedastic
Gaussian noise. Focusing on the exponentially weighted aggregate, we prove a
PAC-Bayesian type inequality that leads to sharp oracle inequalities in
discrete but also in continuous settings. The framework is general enough to
cover the combinations of various procedures such as least square regression,
kernel ridge regression, shrinking estimators and many other estimators used in
the literature on statistical inverse problems. As a consequence, we show that
the proposed aggregate provides an adaptive estimator in the exact minimax
sense without neither discretizing the range of tuning parameters nor splitting
the set of observations. We also illustrate numerically the good performance
achieved by the exponentially weighted aggregate
A New Approach to Extract Fetal Electrocardiogram Using Affine Combination of Adaptive Filters
The detection of abnormal fetal heartbeats during pregnancy is important for
monitoring the health conditions of the fetus. While adult ECG has made several
advances in modern medicine, noninvasive fetal electrocardiography (FECG)
remains a great challenge. In this paper, we introduce a new method based on
affine combinations of adaptive filters to extract FECG signals. The affine
combination of multiple filters is able to precisely fit the reference signal,
and thus obtain more accurate FECGs. We proposed a method to combine the Least
Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS) filters. Our approach found
that the Combined Recursive Least Squares (CRLS) filter achieves the best
performance among all proposed combinations. In addition, we found that CRLS is
more advantageous in extracting FECG from abdominal electrocardiograms (AECG)
with a small signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compared with the state-of-the-art
MSF-ANC method, CRLS shows improved performance. The sensitivity, accuracy and
F1 score are improved by 3.58%, 2.39% and 1.36%, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
Adaptive Algorithms for Intelligent Acoustic Interfaces
Modern speech communications are evolving towards a new direction which involves users in a more perceptive way. That is the immersive experience, which may be considered as the “last-mile” problem of telecommunications.
One of the main feature of immersive communications is the distant-talking,
i.e. the hands-free (in the broad sense) speech communications without bodyworn
or tethered microphones that takes place in a multisource environment where interfering signals may degrade the communication quality and the intelligibility of the desired speech source. In order to preserve speech quality intelligent acoustic interfaces may be used. An intelligent acoustic interface may comprise multiple microphones and loudspeakers and its peculiarity is to model the acoustic channel in order to adapt to user requirements and to environment conditions. This is the reason why intelligent acoustic interfaces are based on adaptive filtering algorithms.
The acoustic path modelling entails a set of problems which have to be taken into account in designing an adaptive filtering algorithm. Such problems may be basically generated by a linear or a nonlinear process and can be tackled respectively by linear or nonlinear adaptive algorithms.
In this work we consider such modelling problems and we propose novel effective adaptive algorithms that allow acoustic interfaces to be robust against any interfering signals, thus preserving the perceived quality of desired speech signals.
As regards linear adaptive algorithms, a class of adaptive filters based on the
sparse nature of the acoustic impulse response has been recently proposed.
We adopt such class of adaptive filters, named proportionate adaptive filters, and derive a general framework from which it is possible to derive any linear adaptive algorithm. Using such framework we also propose some efficient proportionate adaptive algorithms, expressly designed to tackle problems of a linear nature.
On the other side, in order to address problems deriving from a nonlinear process, we propose a novel filtering model which performs a nonlinear transformations by means of functional links. Using such nonlinear model, we propose functional link adaptive filters which provide an efficient solution to the modelling of a nonlinear acoustic channel.
Finally, we introduce robust filtering architectures based on adaptive combinations of filters that allow acoustic interfaces to more effectively adapt to environment conditions, thus providing a powerful mean to immersive speech communications
