Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    A review of smartphones based indoor positioning: challenges and applications

    The continual proliferation of mobile devices has encouraged much effort in using the smartphones for indoor positioning. This article is dedicated to review the most recent and interesting smartphones based indoor navigation systems, ranging from electromagnetic to inertia to visible light ones, with an emphasis on their unique challenges and potential real-world applications. A taxonomy of smartphones sensors will be introduced, which serves as the basis to categorise different positioning systems for reviewing. A set of criteria to be used for the evaluation purpose will be devised. For each sensor category, the most recent, interesting and practical systems will be examined, with detailed discussion on the open research questions for the academics, and the practicality for the potential clients

    Global Navigation Satellite Systems provide accurate and reliable outdoor positioning to support a large number of applications across many sectors. Unfortunately, such systems do not operate reliably inside buildings due to the signal degradation caused by the absence of a clear line of sight with the satellites. The past two decades have therefore seen intensive research into the development of Indoor Positioning System (IPS). While considerable progress has been made in the indoor localisation discipline, there is still no widely adopted solution. The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices within the modern built environment provides an opportunity to localise human subjects by utilising such ubiquitous networked devices. This thesis presents the development, implementation and evaluation of several passive indoor positioning systems using ambient Visible Light Positioning (VLP), capacitive-flooring, and thermopile sensors (low-resolution thermal cameras). These systems position the human subject in a device-free manner (i.e., the subject is not required to be instrumented). The developed systems improve upon the state-of-the-art solutions by offering superior position accuracy whilst also using more robust and generalised test setups. The developed passive VLP system is one of the first reported solutions making use of ambient light to position a moving human subject. The capacitive-floor based system improves upon the accuracy of existing flooring solutions as well as demonstrates the potential for automated fall detection. The system also requires very little calibration, i.e., variations of the environment or subject have very little impact upon it. The thermopile positioning system is also shown to be robust to changes in the environment and subjects. Improvements are made over the current literature by testing across multiple environments and subjects whilst using a robust ground truth system. Finally, advanced machine learning methods were implemented and benchmarked against a thermopile dataset which has been made available for other researchers to use

    WIFI BASED INDOOR POSITIONING - A MACHINE LEARNING APPROACH

    Navigation has become much easier these days mainly due to advancement in satellite technology. The current navigation systems provide better positioning accuracy but are limited to outdoors. When it comes to the indoor spaces such as airports, shopping malls, hospitals or office buildings, to name a few, it will be challenging to get good positioning accuracy with satellite signals due to thick walls and roofs as obstacles. This gap led to a whole new area of research in the field of indoor positioning. Many researches have been conducting experiments on different technologies and successful outcomes have beenseen. Each technology providing indoor positioning capability has its own limitations. In this thesis, different radio frequency (RF) and non-radio frequency (Non-RF) technologies are discussed but focus is set on Wi-Fi for indoor positioning. A demo indoor positioning app is developed for the Technobothnia building at the University of Vaasa premises. This building is already equipped with Wi-Fi infrastructure. A floor plan of the building, radio maps and a fingerprinting database with Wi-Fi signal strength measurements is created with help of tools from HERE technology. The app provides real-time positioning and routing as a future visitor tool. With the exceeding amounts of available data, one of the highly popular fields is applying Machine Learning (ML) to data. It can be applied in many disciplines from medicine to space. In ML, algorithms learn from the data and make predictions. Due to the significant growth in various sensor technologies and computational power, large amounts of data can be stored and processed. Here, the ML approach is also taken to the indoor positioning challenge. An open-source Wi-Fi fingerprinting dataset is obtained from Tampere University and ML algorithms are applied on it for performing indoor positioning. Algorithms are trained with received signal strength (RSS) values with their respective reference coordinates and the user location can be predicted. The thesis provides a performance analysis of different algorithms suitable for future mobile implementations

    Αυτή η εργασία μελετά ένα νέο σύστημα οπτικών επικοινωνιών LiFi για την εκτίμηση της τρισδιάστατης θέσης και του προσανατολισμού των συσκευών των χρηστών, με βάση συλλεγμένα, επισημασμένα και ελεγμένα δεδομένα, χρησιμοποιώντας προσεγγίσεις τεχνητών νευρωνικών δικτύων που βασίζονται σε πυρήνα. Περιγράφονται τόσο η συλλογή και η επισήμανση ενός συνόλου δεδομένων, όσο και τα χρησιμοποιούμενα μοντέλα. Παρουσιάζονται οι αλγόριθμοι ANN, όπως CNN, MLP και SVM και τα αποτελέσματα συγκρίνονται με αυτά του KNN ως προς την απόδοση, όπως ο χρόνος που χρησιμοποιείται, ο ρυθμός σφάλματος bit, η ακρίβεια και το μέσο σφάλμα εκτίμησης. Η όλη διαδικασία χωρίστηκε σε διάφορα στάδια, όπως συλλογή δεδομένων, μοντέλο εκπαίδευσης και έλεγχο. Στη διαδικασία συλλογής δεδομένων χρησιμοποιείται κώδικας MATLAB που βασίζεται σε εκτίμηση γωνίας περιστροφής, περικομμένη κατανομή Laplace με βάση τόσο το LOS όσο και το NLOS, ενώ το μοντέλο εκπαίδευσης περιλαμβάνει την επιλογή του καλύτερου μοντέλου απεικόνισης για την επίτευξη βέλτιστης απόδοσης όσον αφορά τη θέση, τις γωνίες προσανατολισμού του εξοπλισμού χρήστη και το λαμβανόμενο SNR διάνυσμα. Στη φάση του ελεγχου, είναι προφανές ότι τα μοντέλα τροφοδοτούνται από άγνωστα και ανεξερεύνητα δεδομένα και στη συνέχεια εκτιμάται η ορθότητα των αποτελεσμάτων.This Thesis studies a novel LiFi optical communication system, the 3D position and orientation of users’ devices depending on collected, labelled, and tested dataset by using kernel-based Artificial Neural Network approaches. Both the collection and labelling of a dataset and the used models are explained. The ANN algorithms such as CNN, MLP, and SVM are presented and the results are compared with KNN output in terms of performance, such as utilized time, bit error rate, accuracy, and average estimate error. The whole process was divided into several steps like data collection, training model, and testing. The data collection process utilizes MATLAB code based on rotation angle estimation, truncated Laplace distribution considering both LOS and NLOS, while the training model includes choosing the best mapping model to reach optimal output in terms of positioning, orientation angles of user equipment, and received SNR vector. In the testing phase, it is obvious that models are fed by unseen and unexplored data and then the correctness of results is estimated

    Citizen participation: crowd-sensed sustainable indoor location services

    In the present era of sustainable innovation, the circular economy paradigm dictates the optimal use and exploitation of existing finite resources. At the same time, the transition to smart infrastructures requires considerable investment in capital, resources and people. In this work, we present a general machine learning approach for offering indoor location awareness without the need to invest in additional and specialised hardware. We explore use cases where visitors equipped with their smart phone would interact with the available WiFi infrastructure to estimate their location, since the indoor requirement poses a limitation to standard GPS solutions. Results have shown that the proposed approach achieves a less than 2m accuracy and the model is resilient even in the case where a substantial number of BSSIDs are dropped.Comment: Preprint submitted to Elsevie

    Invoking Deep Learning for Joint Estimation of Indoor LiFi User Position and Orientation

    Light-fidelity (LiFi) is a fully-networked bidirectional optical wireless communication (OWC) that is considered a promising solution for high-speed indoor connectivity. Unlike in conventional radio frequency wireless systems, the OWC channel is not isotropic, meaning that the device orientation affects the channel gain significantly. However, due to the lack of proper channel models for LiFi systems, many studies have assumed that the receiver is vertically upward and randomly located within the coverage area, which is not a realistic assumption from a practical point of view. In this paper, novel realistic and measurement-based channel models for indoor LiFi systems are proposed. Precisely, the statistics of the channel gain are derived for the case of randomly oriented stationary and mobile LiFi receivers. For stationary users, two channel models are proposed, namely, the modified truncated Laplace (MTL) model and the modified Beta (MB) model. For LiFi users, two channel models are proposed, namely, the sum of modified truncated Gaussian (SMTG) model and the sum of modified Beta (SMB) model. Based on the derived models, the impact of random orientation and spatial distribution of LiFi users is investigated, where we show that the aforementioned factors can strongly affect the channel gain and system performance

    In recent years, rapid development in robotics, mobile, and communication technologies has encouraged many studies in the field of localization and navigation in indoor environments. An accurate localization system that can operate in an indoor environment has considerable practical value, because it can be built into autonomous mobile systems or a personal navigation system on a smartphone for guiding people through airports, shopping malls, museums and other public institutions, etc. Such a system would be particularly useful for blind people. Modern smartphones are equipped with numerous sensors (such as inertial sensors, cameras, and barometers) and communication modules (such as WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, LTE/5G, and UWB capabilities), which enable the implementation of various localization algorithms, namely, visual localization, inertial navigation system, and radio localization. For the mapping of indoor environments and localization of autonomous mobile sysems, LIDAR sensors are also frequently used in addition to smartphone sensors. Visual localization and inertial navigation systems are sensitive to external disturbances; therefore, sensor fusion approaches can be used for the implementation of robust localization algorithms. These have to be optimized in order to be computationally efficient, which is essential for real-time processing and low energy consumption on a smartphone or robot
