Artificial intelligence makes computers lazy
This paper looks at the age-old problem of trying to instil some degree of intelligence in computers. Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Genetic Programming (GP) are techniques that are used to evolve a solution to a problem using processes that mimic natural evolution. This paper reflects on the experience gained while conducting research applying GA and GP to two quite different problems: Medical Diagnosis and Robot Path Planning. An observation is made that when these algorithms are not applied correctly the computer seemingly exhibits lazy behaviour, arriving at a suboptimal solutions. Using examples, this paper shows how this 'lazy' behaviour can be overcome
Personalization in cultural heritage: the road travelled and the one ahead
Over the last 20 years, cultural heritage has been a favored domain for personalization research. For years, researchers have experimented with the cutting edge
technology of the day; now, with the convergence of internet and wireless technology, and the increasing adoption of the Web as a platform for the publication of information, the visitor is able to exploit cultural heritage material before, during and after the visit, having different goals and requirements in each phase. However, cultural heritage sites have a huge amount of information to present, which must be filtered and personalized in order to enable the individual user to easily access it. Personalization of cultural heritage information requires a system that is able to model the user
(e.g., interest, knowledge and other personal characteristics), as well as contextual aspects, select the most appropriate content, and deliver it in the most suitable way. It should be noted that achieving this result is extremely challenging in the case of first-time users, such as tourists who visit a cultural heritage site for the first time (and maybe the only time in their life). In addition, as tourism is a social activity, adapting to the individual is not enough because groups and communities have to be modeled and supported as well, taking into account their mutual interests, previous mutual experience, and requirements. How to model and represent the user(s) and the context of the visit and how to reason with regard to the information that is available are the challenges faced by researchers in personalization of cultural heritage. Notwithstanding the effort invested so far, a definite solution is far from being reached, mainly because new technology and new aspects of personalization are constantly being introduced. This article surveys the research in this area. Starting from the earlier systems, which presented cultural heritage information in kiosks, it summarizes the evolution of personalization techniques in museum web sites, virtual collections and mobile guides, until recent extension of cultural heritage toward the semantic and social web. The paper concludes with current challenges and points out areas where future research is needed
Deep Thermal Imaging: Proximate Material Type Recognition in the Wild through Deep Learning of Spatial Surface Temperature Patterns
We introduce Deep Thermal Imaging, a new approach for close-range automatic
recognition of materials to enhance the understanding of people and ubiquitous
technologies of their proximal environment. Our approach uses a low-cost mobile
thermal camera integrated into a smartphone to capture thermal textures. A deep
neural network classifies these textures into material types. This approach
works effectively without the need for ambient light sources or direct contact
with materials. Furthermore, the use of a deep learning network removes the
need to handcraft the set of features for different materials. We evaluated the
performance of the system by training it to recognise 32 material types in both
indoor and outdoor environments. Our approach produced recognition accuracies
above 98% in 14,860 images of 15 indoor materials and above 89% in 26,584
images of 17 outdoor materials. We conclude by discussing its potentials for

Marble Slabs Classification System Based on Image Processing (Ark Marble Mine in Birjand)
Marble is one of the semi-precious stones that has been used in decorating building façade and making decorative things. This stone is present in the nature in the form of rock or layered stone. Examining the kind of stone, extent of impurity and different streaks in white marble is a widely confronted subject by those who are involved in this industry. Obtaining the extent of impurity of white marble using methods of detecting and analyzing material is expensive and time-consuming. In this research carried out on while marbles of Arc Mine in Birjand, it has been attempted to present very fast method using Image Processing Techniques so that while preserving identity and appearance of stone and without any damage to it, we compute the impurity level and different streaks on white marble surface. The proposed method includes two stages; in the first stage applying image processing functions, it is attempted to segment the present impurities and streaks on marble surface from the stone background and in the second stage, the area of these impurities and streaks is computed. Results obtained in this paper (97.8%) in comparison with other researches and experimental methods indicate acceptability of this algorithm
Mathematical Problems in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering
With increasing requirements for energy, resources and space, rock engineering projects are being constructed more often and are operated in large-scale environments with complex geology. Meanwhile, rock failures and rock instabilities occur more frequently, and severely threaten the safety and stability of rock engineering projects. It is well-recognized that rock has multi-scale structures and involves multi-scale fracture processes. Meanwhile, rocks are commonly subjected simultaneously to complex static stress and strong dynamic disturbance, providing a hotbed for the occurrence of rock failures. In addition, there are many multi-physics coupling processes in a rock mass. It is still difficult to understand these rock mechanics and characterize rock behavior during complex stress conditions, multi-physics processes, and multi-scale changes. Therefore, our understanding of rock mechanics and the prevention and control of failure and instability in rock engineering needs to be furthered. The primary aim of this Special Issue “Mathematical Problems in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering” is to bring together original research discussing innovative efforts regarding in situ observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical, numerical, and big-data-based methods to overcome the mathematical problems related to rock mechanics and rock engineering. It includes 12 manuscripts that illustrate the valuable efforts for addressing mathematical problems in rock mechanics and rock engineering

I’ve (Urn)ed This: An Application and Criterion-based Evaluation of the Urnings Algorithm
There is increased interest in personalized learning and making e-learning environments more adaptable. Some e-learning systems may use an Item Response Theory (IRT)-based assessment system. An important distinction between assessment and learning contexts is that learner proficiency is expected to remain constant across an assessment, while it is expected to change over time in a learning context. Constant learner proficiency during an assessment enables conventional approaches to estimating person and item parameters using IRT. These IRT-based systems could be abandoned for alternative approaches to modeling learners and system learning content, but assessments may provide more functions than adapting learning material to students. Thus, there is the question, how can e-learning systems with IRT-based assessment components more dynamically adapt their learning content? Is there a solution that leverages IRT for adapting the learning content of the system? A promising solution is the Urnings algorithm. Like other candidate algorithms, it is computationally light, but this algorithm has mechanisms for preventing variance inflation and is suitable for e-learning contexts. It also provides a measure of uncertainty around estimates. It has been studied both through simulations and applications to e-learning systems. Results are promising; however, there has not been an application of the Urnings algorithm to an e-learning context where there are conventionally estimated person parameters to compare the algorithm estimates to. This study addresses this gap by applying the Urnings algorithm to a K–8 reading and mathematics learning platform. In data from this platform, we have person parameter estimates across academic years from an in-system diagnostic assessment. Results from this study will help industry researchers understand the feasibility of the Urnings algorithm for large e-learning systems with IRT-based assessment components
A Survey of Geometric Analysis in Cultural Heritage
We present a review of recent techniques for performing geometric analysis in cultural heritage (CH) applications. The survey is aimed at researchers in the areas of computer graphics, computer vision and CH computing, as well as to scholars and practitioners in the CH field. The problems considered include shape perception enhancement, restoration and preservation support, monitoring over time, object interpretation and collection analysis. All of these problems typically rely on an understanding of the structure of the shapes in question at both a local and global level. In this survey, we discuss the different problem forms and review the main solution methods, aided by classification criteria based on the geometric scale at which the analysis is performed and the cardinality of the relationships among object parts exploited during the analysis. We finalize the report by discussing open problems and future perspectives
