Multi-layer local optima networks for the analysis of advanced local search-based algorithms
A Local Optima Network (LON) is a graph model that compresses the fitness
landscape of a particular combinatorial optimization problem based on a
specific neighborhood operator and a local search algorithm. Determining which
and how landscape features affect the effectiveness of search algorithms is
relevant for both predicting their performance and improving the design
process. This paper proposes the concept of multi-layer LONs as well as a
methodology to explore these models aiming at extracting metrics for fitness
landscape analysis. Constructing such models, extracting and analyzing their
metrics are the preliminary steps into the direction of extending the study on
single neighborhood operator heuristics to more sophisticated ones that use
multiple operators. Therefore, in the present paper we investigate a twolayer
LON obtained from instances of a combinatorial problem using bitflip and swap
operators. First, we enumerate instances of NK-landscape model and use the hill
climbing heuristic to build the corresponding LONs. Then, using LON metrics, we
analyze how efficiently the search might be when combining both strategies. The
experiments show promising results and demonstrate the ability of multi-layer
LONs to provide useful information that could be used for in metaheuristics
based on multiple operators such as Variable Neighborhood Search.Comment: Accepted in GECCO202
A complex systems methodology to transition management
There is a general sense of urgency that major technological transitions are required for sustainable development. Such transitions are best perceived as involving multiple transition steps along a transition path. Due to the path dependent and irreversible nature of innovation in complex technologies, an initial transition step along some preferred path may cut off paths that later may turn out to be more desirable. For these reasons, initial transition steps should allow for future flexibility, where we define flexibility as robustness regarding changing evidence and changing preferences. We propose a technology assessment methodology that identifies the flexibility of initial transition steps in complex technologies. Braess paradox in a network with stochastic dynamics and fixed strategies
The Braess paradox can be observed in road networks used by selfish users. It
describes the counterintuitive situation in which adding a new, per se faster,
origin-destination connection to a road network results in increased travel
times for all network users. We study the network as originally proposed by
Braess but introduce microscopic particle dynamics based on the totally
asymmetric exclusion processes. In contrast to our previous work
[10.1103/PhysRevE.94.062312], where routes were chosen randomly according to
turning rates, here we study the case of drivers with fixed route choices. We
find that travel time reduction due to the new road only happens at really low
densities and Braess' paradox dominates the largest part of the phase diagram.
Furthermore, the domain wall phase observed in [10.1103/PhysRevE.94.062312]
vanishes. In the present model gridlock states are observed in a large part of
phase space. We conclude that the construcion of a new road can often be very
critical and should be considered carefully.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figure
ES Is More Than Just a Traditional Finite-Difference Approximator
An evolution strategy (ES) variant based on a simplification of a natural
evolution strategy recently attracted attention because it performs
surprisingly well in challenging deep reinforcement learning domains. It
searches for neural network parameters by generating perturbations to the
current set of parameters, checking their performance, and moving in the
aggregate direction of higher reward. Because it resembles a traditional
finite-difference approximation of the reward gradient, it can naturally be
confused with one. However, this ES optimizes for a different gradient than
just reward: It optimizes for the average reward of the entire population,
thereby seeking parameters that are robust to perturbation. This difference can
channel ES into distinct areas of the search space relative to gradient
descent, and also consequently to networks with distinct properties. This
unique robustness-seeking property, and its consequences for optimization, are
demonstrated in several domains. They include humanoid locomotion, where
networks from policy gradient-based reinforcement learning are significantly
less robust to parameter perturbation than ES-based policies solving the same
task. While the implications of such robustness and robustness-seeking remain
open to further study, this work's main contribution is to highlight such
differences and their potential importance
Tailoring a coherent control solution landscape by linear transforms of spectral phase basis
Finding an optimal phase pattern in a multidimensional solution landscape becomes easier and faster if local optima are suppressed and contour lines are tailored towards closed convex patterns. Using wideband second harmonic generation as a coherent control test case, we show that a linear combination of spectral phase basis functions can result in such improvements and also in separable phase terms, each of which can be found independently. The improved shapes are attributed to a suppressed nonlinear shear, changing the relative orientation of contour lines. The first order approximation of the process shows a simple relation between input and output phase profiles, useful for pulse shaping at ultraviolet wavelengths
Adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization
Seeking multiple optima simultaneously, which multimodal optimization aims at, has attracted increasing attention but remains challenging. Taking advantage of ant colony optimization algorithms in preserving high diversity, this paper intends to extend ant colony optimization algorithms to deal with multimodal optimization. First, combined with current niching methods, an adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization algorithm is introduced. In this algorithm, an adaptive parameter adjustment is developed, which takes the difference among niches into consideration. Second, to accelerate convergence, a differential evolution mutation operator is alternatively utilized to build base vectors for ants to construct new solutions. Then, to enhance the exploitation, a local search scheme based on Gaussian distribution is self-adaptively performed around the seeds of niches. Together, the proposed algorithm affords a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments on 20 widely used benchmark multimodal functions are conducted to investigate the influence of each algorithmic component and results are compared with several state-of-the-art multimodal algorithms and winners of competitions on multimodal optimization. These comparisons demonstrate the competitive efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, especially in dealing with complex problems with high numbers of local optima
Deconstructing the Big Valley Search Space Hypothesis
The big valley hypothesis suggests that, in combinatorial optimisation, local optima of good quality are clustered and surround the global optimum. We show here that the idea of a single valley does not always hold. Instead the big valley seems to de-construct into several valleys, also called ‘funnels’ in theoretical chemistry. We use the local optima networks model and propose an effective procedure for extracting the network data. We conduct a detailed study on four selected TSP instances of moderate size and observe that the big valley decomposes into a number of sub-valleys of different sizes and fitness distributions. Sometimes the global optimum is located in the largest valley, which suggests an easy to search landscape, but this is not generally the case. The global optimum might be located in a small valley, which offers a clear and visual explanation of the increased search difficulty in these cases. Our study opens up new possibilities for analysing and visualising combinatorial landscapes as complex networks

Searching for improvement
Engineering design can be thought of as a search for the best solutions to engineering problems. To perform an effective search, one must distinguish between competing designs and establish a measure of design quality, or fitness. To compare different designs, their features must be adequately described in a well-defined framework, which can mean separating the creative and analytical parts of the design process. By this we mean that a distinction is drawn between coming up with novel design concepts, or architectures, and the process of detailing or refining existing design architecture. In the case of a given design architecture, one can consider the set of all possible designs that could be created by varying its features. If it were possible to measure the fitness of all designs in this set, then one could identify a fitness landscape and search for the best possible solution for this design architecture. In this Chapter, the significance of the interactions between design features in defining the metaphorical fitness landscape is described. This highlights that the efficiency of a search algorithm is inextricably linked to the problem structure (and hence the landscape). Two approaches, namely, Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Robust Engineering Design (RED) are considered in some detail with reference to a case study on improving the design of cardiovascular stents
