Convergence of packet communications over the evolved mobile networks; signal processing and protocol performance
In this thesis, the convergence of packet communications over the evolved mobile networks is studied. The Long Term Evolution (LTE) process is dominating the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in order to bring technologies to the markets in the spirit of continuous innovation. The global markets of mobile information services are growing towards the Mobile Information Society.
The thesis begins with the principles and theories of the multiple-access transmission schemes, transmitter receiver techniques and signal processing algorithms. Next, packet communications and Internet protocols are referred from the IETF standards with the characteristics of mobile communications in the focus. The mobile network architecture and protocols bind together the evolved packet system of Internet communications to the radio access network technologies. Specifics of the traffic models are shortly visited for their statistical meaning in the radio performance analysis. Radio resource management algorithms and protocols, also procedures, are covered addressing their relevance for the system performance. Throughout these Chapters, the commonalities and differentiators of the WCDMA, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE are covered. The main outcome of the thesis is the performance analysis of the LTE technology beginning from the early discoveries to the analysis of various system features and finally converging to an extensive system analysis campaign. The system performance is analysed with the characteristics of voice over the Internet and best effort traffic of the Internet. These traffic classes represent the majority of the mobile traffic in the converged packet networks, and yet they are simple enough for a fair and generic analysis of technologies. The thesis consists of publications and inventions created by the author that proposed several improvements to the 3G technologies towards the LTE. In the system analysis, the LTE showed by the factor of at least 2.5 to 3 times higher system measures compared to the WCDMA/HSPA reference. The WCDMA/HSPA networks are currently available with over 400 million subscribers and showing increasing growth, in the meanwhile the first LTE roll-outs are scheduled to begin in 2010. Sophisticated 3G LTE mobile devices are expected to appear fluently for all consumer segments in the following years
Link level performance evaluation and link abstraction for LTE/LTE-advanced downlink
The main objectives of this dissertation are the evaluation of the link level performance and the study of link abstraction for LTE/LTE-Advanced DL. An E-UTRA DL link level simulator has been developed based on MIMO-OFDM technology. We simulate channel estimation errors by a Gaussian additive noise error model called CEEM. The result of this simulator serves to evaluate the MIMO-OFDM LTE/LTE-Advanced DL link level performance in different environments.
The basic idea of link abstraction methods is to map the vector of the subcarrier SNRs to a single scalar, the ESNR, which is then used to predict the BLER. We propose a novel link abstraction method that can predict the BLER with good accuracy in multipath fading and including the effects of HARQ retransmissions. The proposed method is based on estimating the mutual information between the transmitted bits and the received LLRs.Postprint (published version
Low-Complexity Algorithms for Channel Estimation in Optimised Pilot-Assisted Wireless OFDM Systems
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has recently become a dominant transmission technology considered for the next generation fixed and mobile broadband wireless communication systems. OFDM has an advantage of lessening the severe effects of the frequency-selective (multipath) fading due to the band splitting into relatively flat fading subchannels, and allows for low-complexity transceiver implementation based on the fast Fourier transform algorithms. Combining OFDM modulation with multilevel frequency-domain symbol mapping (e.g., QAM) and spatial multiplexing (SM) over the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, can theoretically achieve near Shannon capacity of the communication link. However, the high-rate and spectrumefficient system implementation requires coherent detection at the receiving end that is possible only when accurate channel state information (CSI) is available. Since in practice, the response of the wireless channel is unknown and is subject to random variation with time, the receiver typically employs a channel estimator for CSI acquisition. The channel response information retrieved by the estimator is then used by the data detector and can also be fed back to the transmitter by means of in-band or out-of-band signalling, so the latter could adapt power loading, modulation and coding parameters according to the channel conditions. Thus, design of an accurate and robust channel estimator is a crucial requirement for reliable communication through the channel, which is selective in time and frequency. In a MIMO configuration, a separate channel estimator has to be associated with each transmit/receive antenna pair, making the estimation algorithm complexity a primary concern. Pilot-assisted methods, relying on the insertion of reference symbols in certain frequencies and time slots, have been found attractive for identification of the doubly-selective radio channels from both the complexity and performance standpoint. In this dissertation, a family of the reduced-complexity estimators for the single and multiple-antenna OFDM systems is developed. The estimators are based on the transform-domain processing and have the same order of computational complexity, irrespective of the number of pilot subcarriers and their positioning. The common estimator structure represents a cascade of successive small-dimension filtering modules. The number of modules, as well as their order inside the cascade, is determined by the class of the estimator (one or two-dimensional) and availability of the channel statistics (correlation and signal-to-noise power ratio). For fine precision estimation in the multipath channels with statistics not known a priori, we propose recursive design of the filtering modules. Simulation results show that in the steady state, performance of the recursive estimators approaches that of their theoretical counterparts, which are optimal in the minimum mean square error (MMSE) sense. In contrast to the majority of the channel estimators developed so far, our modular-type architectures are suitable for the reconfigurable OFDM transceivers where the actual channel conditions influence the decision of what class of filtering algorithm to use, and how to allot pilot subcarrier positions in the band. In the pilot-assisted transmissions, channel estimation and detection are performed separately from each other over the distinct subcarrier sets. The estimator output is used only to construct the detector transform, but not as the detector input. Since performance of both channel estimation and detection depends on the signal-to-noise power vi ratio (SNR) at the corresponding subcarriers, there is a dilemma of the optimal power allocation between the data and the pilot symbols as these are conflicting requirements under the total transmit power constraint. The problem is exacerbated by the variety of channel estimators. Each kind of estimation algorithm is characterised by its own SNR gain, which in general can vary depending on the channel correlation. In this dissertation, we optimise pilot-data power allocation for the case of developed low-complexity one and two-dimensional MMSE channel estimators. The resultant contribution is manifested by the closed-form analytical expressions of the upper bound (suboptimal approximate value) on the optimal pilot-to-data power ratio (PDR) as a function of a number of design parameters (number of subcarriers, number of pilots, number of transmit antennas, effective order of the channel model, maximum Doppler shift, SNR, etc.). The resultant PDR equations can be applied to the MIMO-OFDM systems with arbitrary arrangement of the pilot subcarriers, operating in an arbitrary multipath fading channel. These properties and relatively simple functional representation of the derived analytical PDR expressions are designated to alleviate the challenging task of on-the-fly optimisation of the adaptive SM-MIMO-OFDM system, which is capable of adjusting transmit signal configuration (e.g., block length, number of pilot subcarriers or antennas) according to the established channel conditions
Fairness-Oriented and QoS-Aware Radio Resource Management in OFDMA Packet Radio Networks: Practical Algorithms and System Performance
During the last two decades, wireless technologies have demonstrated their importance in people’s personal communications but also as one of the fundamental drivers of economic growth, first in the form of cellular networks (2G, 3G and beyond) and more recently in terms of wireless computer networks (e.g. Wi-Fi,) and wireless Internet connectivity. Currently, the development of new packet radio systems is evolving, most notably in terms of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced, in order to utilize the available radio spectrum as efficiently as possible. Therefore, advanced radio resource management (RRM) techniques have an important role in current and emerging future mobile networks.
In all wireless systems, the data throughput and the average data delay performance, especially in case of best effort services, are greatly degraded when the traffic-load in the system is high. This is because the radio resources (time, frequency and space) are shared by multiple users. Another big problem is that the transmission performance can vary heavily between different users, since the channel state greatly depends on the communication environment and changes therein. To solve these challenges, new major technology innovations are needed.
This thesis considers new practical fairness-oriented and quality-of-service (QoS) -aware RRM algorithms in OFDMA-based packet radio networks. Moreover, using UTRAN LTE radio network as application example, we focus on analyzing and enhancing the system-level performance by utilizing state-of-the-art waveform and radio link developments combined with advanced radio resource management methods. The presented solutions as part of RRM framework consist of efficient packet scheduling, link adaptation, power control, admission control and retransmission mechanisms. More specifically, several novel packet scheduling algorithms are proposed and analyzed to address these challenges.
This dissertation deals specifically with the problems of QoS provisioning and fair radio resource distribution among users with limited channel feedback, admission and power control in best effort and video streaming type traffic scenarios, and the resulting system-level performance. The work and developments are practically-oriented taking aspects like finite channel state information (CSI), reporting delays and retransmissions into account. Consequently, the multi-user diversity gain with opportunistic frequency domain packet scheduling (FDPS) is further explored in spatial domain by taking the multiantenna techniques and spatial division multiplexing functionalities into account.
Validation and analysis of the proposed solutions is performed through extensive system level simulations modeling the behavior and operation of a complete multiuser cell in the overall network. Based on the obtained performance results, it is confirmed that greatly improved fairness can be fairly easily built in to the scheduling algorithm and other RRM mechanisms without considerably degrading e.g. the average cell throughput. Moreover, effective QoS-provisioning framework in video streaming type traffic scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented solutions as increased system capacity measured in terms of the number of users or parallel streaming services supported simultaneously by the network
Novel feedback and signalling mechanisms for interference management and efficient modulation
In order to meet the ever-growing demand for mobile data, a number of different technologies
have been adopted by the fourth generation standardization bodies. These include multiple access
schemes such as spatial division multiple access (SDMA), and efficient modulation techniques
such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based modulation. The
specific objectives of this theses are to develop an effective feedback method for interference
management in smart antenna SDMA systems and to design an efficient OFDM-based modulation
technique, where an additional dimension is added to the conventional two-dimensional
modulation techniques such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM).
In SDMA time division duplex (TDD) systems, where channel reciprocity is maintained, uplink
(UL) channel sounding method is considered as one of the most promising feedback methods
due to its bandwidth and delay efficiency. Conventional channel sounding (CCS) only conveys
the channel state information (CSI) of each active user to the base station (BS). Due to
the limitation in system performance because of co-channel interference (CCI) from adjacent
cells in interference-limited scenarios, CSI is only a suboptimal metric for multiuser spatial
multiplexing optimization. The first major contribution of this theses is a novel interference
feedback method proposed to provide the BS with implicit knowledge about the interference
level received by each mobile station (MS). More specifically, it is proposed to weight the
conventional channel sounding pilots by the level of the experienced interference at the user’s
side. Interference-weighted channel sounding (IWCS) acts as a spectrally efficient feedback
technique that provides the BS with implicit knowledge about CCI experienced by each MS,
and significantly improves the downlink (DL) sum capacity for both greedy and fair scheduling
policies. For the sake of completeness, a novel procedure is developed to make the IWCS pilots
usable for UL optimization. It is proposed to divide the optimization metric obtained from the
IWCS pilots by the interference experienced at the BS’s antennas. The resultant new metric, the
channel gain divided by the multiplication of DL and UL interference, provides link-protection
awareness and is used to optimize both UL and DL. Using maximum capacity scheduling criterion,
the link-protection aware metric results in a gain in the median system sum capacity of
26.7% and 12.5% in DL and UL respectively compared to the case when conventional channel
sounding techniques are used. Moreover, heuristic algorithm has been proposed in order to
facilitate a practical optimization and to reduce the computational complexity.
The second major contribution of this theses is an innovative transmission approach, referred
to as subcarrier-index modulation (SIM), which is proposed to be integrated with OFDM. The
key idea of SIM is to employ the subcarrier-index to convey information to the receiver. Furthermore,
a closed-form analytical bit error ratio (BER) of SIM OFDM in Rayleigh channel
is derived. Simulation results show BER performance gain of 4 dB over 4-QAM OFDM for
both coded and uncoded data without power saving policy. Alternatively, power saving policy
maintains an average gain of 1 dB while only using half OFDM symbol transmit power
Técnicas de quantização para sistemas de comunicação híbridos na banda de ondas milimétricas com um número elevado de antenas
Since the appearance of mobile communications, the users of this technology have been growing exponentially every day. The escalating mobile traffic growth it has been imposed by the proliferation of smartphones and tablets. The increasing and more intensive use of wireless communications may lead to a future breaking point, where the traditional systems will fail to support the required capability, spectral and energy efficiency. On the other hand, to cover all this current need to have more and more data it is necessary to provide a new range of data rates around the gigabits per second.
Today, almost all mobile communications systems use spectrum in the range of 300MHz – 3GHz. It is needed to start looking to the range of 3GHz – 300GHz spectrum for mobile broadband applications. Millimeter waves are one way to alleviate the spectrum gridlock at lower frequencies.
MIMO based systems has been researched for the last 20 years and are now part of the current standards. However, to achieve more gains, a grander view of the MIMO concept envisions the use of a large scale of antennas at each base stations, a concept referred as massive MIMO. The symbiotic combination of these technologies and other ones will lead to the development of a new generation system known as the 5G.
The knowledge of the channel state information at the transmitter is very important in real massive MIMO millimeter wave systems. In this dissertation a limited feedback strategy for a hybrid massive MIMO OFDM system is proposed, where only a part of the parameters associated to the link channel are quantized and fed back. The limited feedback strategy employs a uniform-based quantization for channel amplitudes, angle of departure and angle of arrival in time domain. After being fed back, this information is used to reconstruct the overall channel in frequency domain and the transmit antenna array, which are then used to compute the hybrid analog-digital precoders. Numerical results show that the proposed quantization strategy achieve a performance close to the one obtained with perfect full channel, with a low overhead and complexityDesde o aparecimento das comunicações móveis, os utilizadores desta tecnologia têm vindo a crescer exponencialmente todos os dias.
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Detection Algorithms for Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing
Since its invention, cellular communication has dramatically transformed personal lifes and the evolution of mobile networks is still ongoing. Evergrowing demand for higher data rates has driven development of 3G and 4G systems, but foreseen 5G requirements also address diverse characteristics such as low latency or massive connectivity. It is speculated that the 4G plain cyclic prefix (CP)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) cannot sufficiently fulfill all requirements and hence alternative waveforms have been in-vestigated, where generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is one popular option. An important aspect for any modern wireless communication system is the application of multi-antenna, i.e. MIMO techiques, as MIMO can deliver gains in terms of capacity, reliability and connectivity. Due to its channel-independent orthogonality, CP-OFDM straightforwardly supports broadband MIMO techniques, as the resulting inter-antenna interference (IAI) can readily be resolved. In this regard, CP-OFDM is unique among multicarrier waveforms. Other waveforms suffer from additional inter-carrier interference (ICI), inter-symbol interference (ISI) or both. This possibly 3-dimensional interference renders an optimal MIMO detection much more complex. In this thesis, weinvestigate how GFDM can support an efficient multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) operation given its 3-dimensional interference structure. To this end, we first connect the mathematical theory of time-frequency analysis (TFA) with multicarrier waveforms in general, leading to theoretical insights into GFDM. Second, we show that the detection problem can be seen as a detection problem on a large, banded linear model under Gaussian noise. Basing on this observation, we propose methods for applying both space-time code (STC) and spatial multiplexing techniques to GFDM. Subsequently, we propose methods to decode the transmitted signals and numerically and theoretically analyze their performance in terms of complexiy and achieved frame error rate (FER). After showing that GFDM modulation and linear demodulation is a direct application of Gabor expansion and transform, we apply results from TFA to explain singularities of the modulation matrix and derive low-complexity expressions for receiver filters. We derive two linear detection algorithms for STC encoded GFDM signals and we show that their performance is equal to OFDM. In the case of spatial multiplexing, we derive both non-iterative and iterative detection algorithms which base on successive interference cancellation (SIC) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE)-parallel interference cancellation (PIC) detection, respectively. By analyzing the error propagation of the SIC algorithm, we explain its significantly inferior performance compared to OFDM. Using feedback information from the channel decoder, we can eventually show that near-optimal GFDM detection can outperform an optimal OFDM detector by up to 3dB for high SNR regions. We conclude that GFDM, given the obtained results, is not a general-purpose replacement for CP-OFDM, due to higher complexity and varying performance. Instead, we can propose GFDM for scenarios with strong frequency-selectivity and stringent spectral and FER requirements
Advanced receiver structures for mobile MIMO multicarrier communication systems
Beyond third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G) wireless communication systems are targeting far higher data rates, spectral efficiency and mobility requirements than existing 3G networks. By using multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology allows improving both the spectral efficiency (bits/s/Hz), the coverage, and link reliability of the system. Multicarrier modulation such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a powerful technique to handle impairments specific to the wireless radio channel. The combination of multicarrier modulation together with MIMO signaling provides a feasible physical layer technology for future beyond 3G and fourth generation communication systems.
The theoretical benefits of MIMO and multicarrier modulation may not be fully achieved because the wireless transmission channels are time and frequency selective. Also, high data rates call for a large bandwidth and high carrier frequencies. As a result, an important Doppler spread is likely to be experienced, leading to variations of the channel over very short period of time. At the same time, transceiver front-end imperfections, mobility and rich scattering environments cause frequency synchronization errors. Unlike their single-carrier counterparts, multi-carrier transmissions are extremely sensitive to carrier frequency offsets (CFO). Therefore, reliable channel estimation and frequency synchronization are necessary to obtain the benefits of MIMO OFDM in mobile systems. These two topics are the main research problems in this thesis.
An algorithm for the joint estimation and tracking of channel and CFO parameters in MIMO OFDM is developed in this thesis. A specific state-space model is introduced for MIMO OFDM systems impaired by multiple carrier frequency offsets under time-frequency selective fading. In MIMO systems, multiple frequency offsets are justified by mobility, rich scattering environment and large angle spread, as well as potentially separate radio frequency - intermediate frequency chains. An extended Kalman filter stage tracks channel and CFO parameters. Tracking takes place in time domain, which ensures reduced computational complexity, robustness to estimation errors as well as low estimation variance in comparison to frequency domain processing.
The thesis also addresses the problem of blind carrier frequency synchronization in OFDM. Blind techniques exploit statistical or structural properties of the OFDM modulation. Two novel approaches are proposed for blind fine CFO estimation. The first one aims at restoring the orthogonality of the OFDM transmission by exploiting the properties of the received signal covariance matrix. The second approach is a subspace algorithm exploiting the correlation of the channel frequency response among the subcarriers. Both methods achieve reliable estimation of the CFO regardless of multipath fading. The subspace algorithm needs extremely small sample support, which is a key feature in the face of time-selective channels. Finally, the Cramér-Rao (CRB) bound is established for the problem in order to assess the large sample performance of the proposed algorithms.reviewe
