Complex-valued (CV) B-spline neural network approach offers a highly effective means for identifying and inverting practical Hammerstein systems. Compared with its conventional CV polynomial-based counterpart, a CV B-spline neural network has superior performance in identifying and inverting CV Hammerstein systems, while imposing a similar complexity. This paper reviews the optimality of the CV B-spline neural network approach. Advantages of B-spline neural network approach as compared with the polynomial based modeling approach are extensively discussed, and the effectiveness of the CV neural network-based approach is demonstrated in a real-world application. More specifically, we evaluate the comparative performance of the CV B-spline and polynomial-based approaches for the nonlinear iterative frequency-domain decision feedback equalization (NIFDDFE) of single-carrier Hammerstein channels. Our results confirm the superior performance of the CV B-spline-based NIFDDFE over its CV polynomial-based counterpart

A parametric time frequency-conditional Granger causality method using ultra-regularized orthogonal least squares and multiwavelets for dynamic connectivity analysis in EEGs

Objective: This study proposes a new para-metric TF-CGC (time-frequency conditional Granger causality) method for high-precision connectivity analysis over time and frequency domain in multivariate coupling nonstationary systems, and applies it to source EEG signals to reveal dynamic interaction patterns in oscillatory neo-cortical sensorimotor networks. Methods: The Geweke's spectral measure is combined with the TVARX (time-varying autoregressive with exogenous input) model-ling approach, which uses multiwavelet-based ul-tra-regularized orthogonal least squares (UROLS) algo-rithm aided by APRESS (adjustable prediction error sum of squares), to obtain high-resolution time-varying CGC representations. The UROLS-APRESS algorithm, which adopts both the regularization technique and the ultra-least squares criterion to measure not only the signal themselves but also the weak derivatives of them, is a novel powerful method in constructing time-varying models with good generalization performance, and can accurately track smooth and fast changing causalities. The generalized measurement based on CGC decomposition is able to eliminate indirect influences in multivariate systems. Re-sults: The proposed method is validated on two simulations and then applied to source level motor imagery (MI) EEGs, where the predicted distributions are well recovered with high TF precision, and the detected connectivity patterns of MI-EEGs are physiologically interpretable and yield new insights into the dynamical organization of oscillatory cor-tical networks. Conclusion: Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the TF-CGC method in tracking rapidly varying causalities of EEG-based oscillatory networks. Significance: The novel TF-CGC method is expected to provide important information of neural mechanisms of perception and cognition

Centre of Excellence in Smart Radios and Wireless Research (SMARAD), originally established with the name Smart and Novel Radios Research Unit, is aiming at world-class research and education in Future radio and antenna systems, Cognitive radio, Millimetre wave and THz techniques, Sensors, and Materials and energy, using its expertise in RF, microwave and millimetre wave engineering, in integrated circuit design for multi-standard radios as well as in wireless communications. SMARAD has the Centre of Excellence in Research status from the Academy of Finland since 2002 (2002-2007 and 2008-2013). Currently SMARAD consists of five research groups from three departments, namely the Department of Radio Science and Engineering, Department of Micro and Nanosciences, and Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics, all within the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. The total number of employees within the research unit is about 100 including 8 professors, about 30 senior scientists and about 40 graduate students and several undergraduate students working on their Master thesis. The relevance of SMARAD to the Finnish society is very high considering the high national income from exports of telecommunications and electronics products. The unit conducts basic research but at the same time maintains close co-operation with industry. Novel ideas are applied in design of new communication circuits and platforms, transmission techniques and antenna structures. SMARAD has a well-established network of co-operating partners in industry, research institutes and academia worldwide. It coordinates a few EU projects. The funding sources of SMARAD are diverse including the Academy of Finland, EU, ESA, Tekes, and Finnish and foreign telecommunications and semiconductor industry. As a byproduct of this research SMARAD provides highest-level education and supervision to graduate students in the areas of radio engineering, circuit design and communications through Aalto University and Finnish graduate schools such as Graduate School in Electronics, Telecommunications and Automation (GETA). During years 2008 – 2010, 21 doctor degrees were awarded to the students of SMARAD. In the same period, the SMARAD researchers published 141 refereed journal articles and 333 conference papers

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).This work introduces the application of embedded machine learning solutions for the problem of magnetic sensors-based limb tracking. Namely, we employ a data-driven strat egy to create mathematical models that can translate the magnetic information measured to usable inputs for prosthetic devices. These models are implemented in FPGAs using cus tomized floating-point operations to optimize hardware and energy consumption, which are important in wearable devices. The hardware architecture is proposed to be implemented as a dynamically partial reconfigured system, potentially reducing resource utilization and power consumption of the FPGA. The proposed data-driven strategy and its hardware implementa tion can achieve a latency in the order of microseconds and low energy consumption, which encourages further research on improving the methods herein devised for other application
