    Evaluation of cascaded MPC performance in voltage source converters

    Model predictive control method becomes more popular in research over the last decade. Due to the growing popularity of the model predictive control concept, there are more and more questions about the effectiveness of this method in comparison with other methods. In this thesis cascaded model predictive control of grid connected voltage source converter with LCL filter has been evaluated. The relevant topics and literature regarding the existing control methods, applying requirements to a converter and different transistor technologies have been studied and reviewed. Three criteria of performance have been selected to compare the MPC method with conventional voltage oriented control method: total and individual harmonic distortion, power factor and power losses. The models have been simulated at rated initial values according to EU standards. The results of simulations have been compared. Existing transistor technologies which can be used in the control models have been investigated. Losses of the converter (without losses in the LCL filter) due to the use of each type of transistors have been calculated for each model

    A Virtual Space Vectors based Model Predictive Control for Three-Level Converters

    Three-phase three-level (3-L) voltage source converters (VSC), e.g., neutral-point clamped (NPC) converters, T-type converters, etc., have been deemed to be suitable for a wide range of medium- to high-power applications in microgrids (MGs) and bulk power systems. Compared to their two-level (2-L) counterparts, adopting 3-L VSCs in the MG applications not only reduces the voltage stress across the power semiconductor devices, which allows achieving higher voltage levels, but also improves the quality of the converter output waveforms, which further leads to considerably smaller output ac passive filters. Various control strategies have been proposed and implemented for 3-L VSCs. Among all the existing control methods, finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been extensively investigated and applied due to its simple and intuitive design, fast-dynamic response and robustness against parameter uncertainties. However, to implement an FCS-MPC on a 3-L VSC, a multi-objective cost function, which consists of a term dedicated specifically to control the dc-link capacitor voltages such that the neutral-point voltage (NP-V) oscillations are minimized, must be designed. Nevertheless, selecting proper weighting factors for the multiple control objectives is difficult and time consuming. Additionally, adding the dc-link capacitor voltages balancing term to the cost function distributes the controller effort among different control targets, which severely impacts the primary goal of the FCS-MPC. Furthermore, to control the dc-link capacitor voltages, additional sensing circuitries are usually necessary to measure the dc-link capacitor voltages and currents, which consequently increases the system cost, volume and wiring complexity as well as reduces overall reliability. To address all the aforementioned challenges, in this dissertation research, a novel FCS-MPC method using virtual space vectors (VSVs), which do not affect the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 3-L VSCs, was proposed, implemented and validated. The proposed FCS-MPC strategy has the capability to achieve inherent balanced dc-link capacitor voltages. Additionally, the demonstrated control technique not only simplifies the controller design by allowing the use of a simplified cost function, but also improves the quality of the 3-L VSC output waveforms. Furthermore, the execution time of the proposed control algorithm was significantly reduced compared to that of the existing one. Lastly, the proposed FCS-MPC using the VSVs reduces the hardware cost and complexity as the additional dc-link capacitor voltages and current sensors are not required, which further enhances the overall system reliability

    Design and Advanced Model Predictive Control of Wide Bandgap Based Power Converters

    The field of power electronics (PE) is experiencing a revolution by harnessing the superior technical characteristics of wide-band gap (WBG) materials, namely Silicone Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN). Semiconductor devices devised using WBG materials enable high temperature operation at reduced footprint, offer higher blocking voltages, and operate at much higher switching frequencies compared to conventional Silicon (Si) based counterpart. These characteristics are highly desirable as they allow converter designs for challenging applications such as more-electric-aircraft (MEA), electric vehicle (EV) power train, and the like. This dissertation presents designs of a WBG based power converters for a 1 MW, 1 MHz ultra-fast offboard EV charger, and 250 kW integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) for a MEA application. The goal of these designs is to demonstrate the superior power density and efficiency that are achievable by leveraging the power of SiC and GaN semiconductors. Ultra-fast EV charging is expected to alleviate the challenge of range anxiety , which is currently hindering the mass adoption of EVs in automotive market. The power converter design presented in the dissertation utilizes SiC MOSFETs embedded in a topology that is a modification of the conventional three-level (3L) active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converter. A novel phase-shifted modulation scheme presented alongside the design allows converter operation at switching frequency of 1 MHz, thereby miniaturizing the grid-side filter to enhance the power density. IMMDs combine the power electronic drive and the electric machine into a single unit, and thus is an efficient solution to realize the electrification of aircraft. The IMMD design presented in the dissertation uses GaN devices embedded in a stacked modular full-bridge converter topology to individually drive each of the motor coils. Various issues and solutions, pertaining to paralleling of GaN devices to meet the high current requirements are also addressed in the thesis. Experimental prototypes of the SiC ultra-fast EV charger and GaN IMMD were built, and the results confirm the efficacy of the proposed designs. Model predictive control (MPC) is a nonlinear control technique that has been widely investigated for various power electronic applications in the past decade. MPC exploits the discrete nature of power converters to make control decisions using a cost function. The controller offers various advantages over, e.g., linear PI controllers in terms of fast dynamic response, identical performance at a reduced switching frequency, and ease of applicability to MIMO applications. This dissertation also investigates MPC for key power electronic applications, such as, grid-tied VSC with an LCL filter and multilevel VSI with an LC filter. By implementing high performance MPC controllers on WBG based power converters, it is possible to formulate designs capable of fast dynamic tracking, high power operation at reduced THD, and increased power density

    A Reduced-Order Generalized Proportional Integral Observer-Based Resonant Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control for Grid-Connected Power Converters

    This article presents a reduced-order generalized proportional-integral observer based resonant super-twisting sliding mode controller (RST-SMC) for the three-phase ac-dc converters. On the contrary to utilizing the proportional-integral controller in regulating the dc-link voltage, which may cause large undershoot/overshoot under the disturbance, the proposed voltage control strategy for the dc-link has high disturbance rejection ability and the settling time has been greatly reduced. In addition, the proposed RST-SMC in the current control loop not only preserve the merits of the sliding mode controller but also achieve the current tracking without steady-state error in the stationary \alpha - \beta frame.     Performance of direct power controlled grid-connected voltage source converters

    PhD ThesisIn this thesis the performance of direct power controlled grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs) is investigated. Of particular interest is the stability of the controller with the third-order LCL filter employed as the grid filter, effect of grid impedance variations and grid voltage distortion, and current limitation during voltage dips. The control scheme implemented is virtual-flux direct power control with space vector modulation (VF-DPC-SVM). By mathematical modelling and stability analysis, it is found that the closed-loop power control system is stable for all values of proportional gain when the current sensors are on the inverter side of the LCL filter. The inverter current together with the estimated grid virtual-flux is used to estimate the active power and the reactive power. The difference between the estimated reactive power and the reactive power on the grid side is compensated for, using a new reactive power error compensation scheme based on the estimated capacitor current. The control system is found to be robust to changes in grid inductance, and remains stable for a range of grid inductance values, and controller proportional gain. It is demonstrated in simulation and experimentally that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current injected by the VSC is less than the limit of 5 %, set by standards, for all different values of grid inductance and proportional gain. This is true even in the presence of significant grid voltage distortion. To control the VSC during voltage dips without damaging the semiconductor devices, a new current limiting algorithm is proposed and implemented. The positive-sequence component of the virtual-flux is used for synchronization and power estimation to achieve balanced, undistorted currents during unsymmetrical voltage dips.
