Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her aşaması anlatılmıştır.

Radical Left Parties and the Role of Euroscepticism

Globalization has shifted the political competition landscape in Western Europe. Extensive research has studied the impact of this on the radical right, yet little attention has been paid to the radical left. This dissertation, comprised of three papers, analyses the impact of the increased European integration emphasis on the radical left. My first paper analyses whether there is a beneficial policy position for the radical left on European integration. The chapter finds that there is an electoral benefit to a Eurosceptic position for radical left parties but also shows that this benefit is constrained when a Eurosceptic competitor, i.e. radical right party, enters the party system. My second paper follows from this and examines an alternative approach for the radical left on European integration. While the benefit of a Eurosceptic position can be constrained, blurring the position on European integration can help avoid losing pro-EU voters. The chapter finds that position blurring on EU integration is beneficial when there is electorate polarization but harmful when the electorate is in consensus on EU integration. When there is consensus, radical left parties benefit from a clear position on EU integration. My third paper is co-authored with Royce Carroll and zooms into the findings of the first two chapters by examining the demand side of Euroscepticism. The paper finds that European integration is an important issue for vote choice of the electorate. The results of the chapter show that the more Eurosceptic voters are, the higher their propensity to vote for a radical left party becomes. These three papers demonstrate how the issue of European integration is in the centre of radical left strategy from a supply and demand side perspective. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing a detailed understanding of the success of small parties beyond their issue ownership

Wildlife trade in Latin America: people, economy and conservation

Wildlife trade is among the main threats to biodiversity conservation and may pose a risk to human health because of the spread of zoonotic diseases. To avoid social, economic and environmental consequences of illegal trade, it is crucial to understand the factors influencing the wildlife market and the effectiveness of policies already in place. I aim to unveil the biological and socioeconomic factors driving wildlife trade, the health risks imposed by the activity, and the effectiveness of certified captive-breeding as a strategy to curb the illegal market in Latin America through a multidisciplinary approach. I assess socioeconomic correlates of the emerging international trade in wild cat species from Latin America using a dataset of >1,000 seized cats, showing that high levels of corruption and Chinese private investment and low income per capita were related to higher numbers of jaguar seizures. I assess the effectiveness of primate captive-breeding programmes as an intervention to curb wildlife trafficking. Illegal sources held >70% of the primate market share. Legal primates are more expensive, and the production is not sufficiently high to fulfil the demand. I assess the scale of the illegal trade and ownership of venomous snakes in Brazil. Venomous snake taxa responsible for higher numbers of snakebites were those most often kept as pets. I uncover how online wildlife pet traders and consumers responded to campaigns associating the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of 20,000 posts on Facebook groups, only 0.44% mentioned COVID-19 and several stimulated the trade in wild species during lockdown. Despite the existence of international and national wildlife trade regulations, I conclude that illegal wildlife trade is still an issue that needs further addressing in Latin America. I identify knowledge gaps and candidate interventions to amend the current loopholes to reduce wildlife trafficking. My aspiration with this thesis is to provide useful information that can inform better strategies to tackle illegal wildlife trade in Latin America

Defining Service Level Agreements in Serverless Computing

The emergence of serverless computing has brought significant advancements to the delivery of computing resources to cloud users. With the abstraction of infrastructure, ecosystem, and execution environments, users could focus on their code while relying on the cloud provider to manage the abstracted layers. In addition, desirable features such as autoscaling and high availability became a provider’s responsibility and can be adopted by the user\u27s application at no extra overhead. Despite such advancements, significant challenges must be overcome as applications transition from monolithic stand-alone deployments to the ephemeral and stateless microservice model of serverless computing. These challenges pertain to the uniqueness of the conceptual and implementation models of serverless computing. One of the notable challenges is the complexity of defining Service Level Agreements (SLA) for serverless functions. As the serverless model shifts the administration of resources, ecosystem, and execution layers to the provider, users become mere consumers of the provider’s abstracted platform with no insight into its performance. Suboptimal conditions of the abstracted layers are not visible to the end-user who has no means to assess their performance. Thus, SLA in serverless computing must take into consideration the unique abstraction of its model. This work investigates the Service Level Agreement (SLA) modeling of serverless functions\u27 and serverless chains’ executions. We highlight how serverless SLA fundamentally differs from earlier cloud delivery models. We then propose an approach to define SLA for serverless functions by utilizing resource utilization fingerprints for functions\u27 executions and a method to assess if executions adhere to that SLA. We evaluate the approach’s accuracy in detecting SLA violations for a broad range of serverless application categories. Our validation results illustrate a high accuracy in detecting SLA violations resulting from resource contentions and provider’s ecosystem degradations. We conclude by presenting the empirical validation of our proposed approach, which could detect Execution-SLA violations with accuracy up to 99%

Educating Sub-Saharan Africa:Assessing Mobile Application Use in a Higher Learning Engineering Programme

In the institution where I teach, insufficient laboratory equipment for engineering education pushed students to learn via mobile phones or devices. Using mobile technologies to learn and practice is not the issue, but the more important question lies in finding out where and how they use mobile tools for learning. Through the lens of Kearney et al.’s (2012) pedagogical model, using authenticity, personalisation, and collaboration as constructs, this case study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate the mobile learning activities of students and find out their experiences of what works and what does not work. Four questions are borne out of the over-arching research question, ‘How do students studying at a University in Nigeria perceive mobile learning in electrical and electronic engineering education?’ The first three questions are answered from qualitative, interview data analysed using thematic analysis. The fourth question investigates their collaborations on two mobile social networks using social network and message analysis. The study found how students’ mobile learning relates to the real-world practice of engineering and explained ways of adapting and overcoming the mobile tools’ limitations, and the nature of the collaborations that the students adopted, naturally, when they learn in mobile social networks. It found that mobile engineering learning can be possibly located in an offline mobile zone. It also demonstrates that investigating the effectiveness of mobile learning in the mobile social environment is possible by examining users’ interactions. The study shows how mobile learning personalisation that leads to impactful engineering learning can be achieved. The study shows how to manage most interface and technical challenges associated with mobile engineering learning and provides a new guide for educators on where and how mobile learning can be harnessed. And it revealed how engineering education can be successfully implemented through mobile tools

Stratosphere-Troposphere Coupling and Oceanic Feedbacks in an Aquaplanet Model

Since the 90’s, there have been many studies looking at the impact of stratospheric temperature perturbations (STP’s) on the troposphere below, and the mechanisms involved. However, it is not well-understood how these interactions might be modified by atmosphere-ocean coupling. This holds particular relevance to the study of e.g. ozone depletion/recovery in the Southern Ocean region. To investigate this, abrupt uniform, polar, and equatorial STP’s – corresponding to different types of forcings - were applied to the atmosphere of MITgcm in an aquaplanet, double-drake configuration. Each was conducted in three different versions of the model: atmosphere-only, atmosphere + slab-ocean, and fully-coupled atmosphere + ocean. In the atmosphere-only model, atmospheric responses similar to those of previous studies were recorded, underscoring their generic nature. In the coupled models, an initial weakening (~decades), and – in the fully coupled model - subsequent strengthening and poleward-shift (~centuries) of the underlying atmospheric response was produced, in polar/equatorial heating experiments. Uniform heating saw the latter process occur initially too. Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies were found to drive these changes, with extratropical/tropical anomalies controlling the former/latter process. These were in turn attributable to changes in the zonal winds, causing anomalies in the turbulent and ocean heat fluxes, although uniform STP’s saw SST changes that were more controlled by large, near-uniform anomalous downwelling longwave fluxes. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating atmosphere-ocean coupling when studying the effects of STP’s, especially over longer timescales (&100 years). With respect to ozone depletion in the Southern Ocean, they suggest an amplified poleward jet shift which - as greenhouse gases continue to rise – may continue and amplify further into the 21st/22nd century.Open Acces

Growth trends and site productivity in boreal forests under management and environmental change: insights from long-term surveys and experiments in Sweden

    Get PDF
Under a changing climate, current tree and stand growth information is indispensable to the carbon sink strength of boreal forests. Important questions regarding tree growth are to what extent have management and environmental change influenced it, and how it might respond in the future. In this thesis, results from five studies (Papers I-V) covering growth trends, site productivity, heterogeneity in managed forests and potentials for carbon storage in forests and harvested wood products via differing management strategies are presented. The studies were based on observations from national forest inventories and long-term experiments in Sweden. The annual height growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) had increased, especially after the millennium shift, while the basal area growth remains stable during the last 40 years (Papers I-II). A positive response on height growth with increasing temperature was observed. The results generally imply a changing growing condition and stand composition. In Paper III, yield capacity of conifers was analysed and compared with existing functions. The results showed that there is a bias in site productivity estimates and the new functions give better prediction of the yield capacity in Sweden. In Paper IV, the variability in stand composition was modelled as indices of heterogeneity to calibrate the relationship between basal area and leaf area index in managed stands of Norway spruce and Scots pine. The results obtained show that the stand structural heterogeneity effects here are of such a magnitude that they cannot be neglected in the implementation of hybrid growth models, especially those based on light interception and light-use efficiency. In the long-term, the net climate benefits in Swedish forests may be maximized through active forest management with high harvest levels and efficient product utilization, compared to increasing carbon storage in standing forests through land set-asides for nature conservation (Paper V). In conclusion, this thesis offers support for the development of evidence-based policy recommendations for site-adapted and sustainable management of Swedish forests in a changing climate
