    Hammock-on-ears decomposition: a technique for the efficient parallel solution of shortest paths and other problems

    We show how to decompose efficiently in parallel {\em any} graph into a number, γ~\tilde{\gamma}, of outerplanar subgraphs (called {\em hammocks}) satisfying certain separator properties. Our work combines and extends the sequential hammock decomposition technique introduced by G.~Frederickson and the parallel ear decomposition technique, thus we call it the {\em hammock-on-ears decomposition}. We mention that hammock-on-ears decomposition also draws from techniques in computational geometry and that an embedding of the graph does not need to be provided with the input. We achieve this decomposition in O(lognloglogn)O(\log n\log\log n) time using O(n+m)O(n+m) CREW PRAM processors, for an nn-vertex, mm-edge graph or digraph. The hammock-on-ears decomposition implies a general framework for solving graph problems efficiently. Its value is demonstrated by a variety of applications on a significant class of (di)graphs, namely that of {\em sparse (di)graphs}. This class consists of all (di)graphs which have a γ~\tilde{\gamma} between 11 and Θ(n)\Theta(n), and includes planar graphs and graphs with genus o(n)o(n). We improve previous bounds for certain instances of shortest paths and related problems, in this class of graphs. These problems include all pairs shortest paths, all pairs reachability

    Compact Routing on Internet-Like Graphs

    The Thorup-Zwick (TZ) routing scheme is the first generic stretch-3 routing scheme delivering a nearly optimal local memory upper bound. Using both direct analysis and simulation, we calculate the stretch distribution of this routing scheme on random graphs with power-law node degree distributions, PkkγP_k \sim k^{-\gamma}. We find that the average stretch is very low and virtually independent of γ\gamma. In particular, for the Internet interdomain graph, γ2.1\gamma \sim 2.1, the average stretch is around 1.1, with up to 70% of paths being shortest. As the network grows, the average stretch slowly decreases. The routing table is very small, too. It is well below its upper bounds, and its size is around 50 records for 10410^4-node networks. Furthermore, we find that both the average shortest path length (i.e. distance) dˉ\bar{d} and width of the distance distribution σ\sigma observed in the real Internet inter-AS graph have values that are very close to the minimums of the average stretch in the dˉ\bar{d}- and σ\sigma-directions. This leads us to the discovery of a unique critical quasi-stationary point of the average TZ stretch as a function of dˉ\bar{d} and σ\sigma. The Internet distance distribution is located in a close neighborhood of this point. This observation suggests the analytical structure of the average stretch function may be an indirect indicator of some hidden optimization criteria influencing the Internet's interdomain topology evolution.Comment: 29 pages, 16 figure

    We provide a framework for the design and analysis of dynamic programming algorithms for surface-embedded graphs on n vertices and branchwidth at most k. Our technique applies to general families of problems where standard dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k log k)} n steps. Our approach combines tools from topological graph theory and analytic combinatorics. In particular, we introduce a new type of branch decomposition called "surface cut decomposition", generalizing sphere cut decompositions of planar graphs introduced by Seymour and Thomas, which has nice combinatorial properties. Namely, the number of partial solutions that can be arranged on a surface cut decomposition can be upper-bounded by the number of non-crossing partitions on surfaces with boundary. It follows that partial solutions can be represented by a single-exponential (in the branchwidth k) number of configurations. This proves that, when applied on surface cut decompositions, dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k)} n steps. That way, we considerably extend the class of problems that can be solved in running times with a single-exponential dependence on branchwidth and unify/improve most previous results in this direction.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figure

    Orderly Spanning Trees with Applications

    We introduce and study the {\em orderly spanning trees} of plane graphs. This algorithmic tool generalizes {\em canonical orderings}, which exist only for triconnected plane graphs. Although not every plane graph admits an orderly spanning tree, we provide an algorithm to compute an {\em orderly pair} for any connected planar graph GG, consisting of a plane graph HH of GG, and an orderly spanning tree of HH. We also present several applications of orderly spanning trees: (1) a new constructive proof for Schnyder's Realizer Theorem, (2) the first area-optimal 2-visibility drawing of GG, and (3) the best known encodings of GG with O(1)-time query support.     Surface Split Decompositions and Subgraph Isomorphism in Graphs on Surfaces

    The Subgraph Isomorphism problem asks, given a host graph G on n vertices and a pattern graph P on k vertices, whether G contains a subgraph isomorphic to P. The restriction of this problem to planar graphs has often been considered. After a sequence of improvements, the current best algorithm for planar graphs is a linear time algorithm by Dorn (STACS '10), with complexity 2O(k)O(n)2^{O(k)} O(n). We generalize this result, by giving an algorithm of the same complexity for graphs that can be embedded in surfaces of bounded genus. At the same time, we simplify the algorithm and analysis. The key to these improvements is the introduction of surface split decompositions for bounded genus graphs, which generalize sphere cut decompositions for planar graphs. We extend the algorithm for the problem of counting and generating all subgraphs isomorphic to P, even for the case where P is disconnected. This answers an open question by Eppstein (SODA '95 / JGAA '99)
