    Virtual Runtime Application Partitions for Resource Management in Massively Parallel Architectures

    This thesis presents a novel design paradigm, called Virtual Runtime Application Partitions (VRAP), to judiciously utilize the on-chip resources. As the dark silicon era approaches, where the power considerations will allow only a fraction chip to be powered on, judicious resource management will become a key consideration in future designs. Most of the works on resource management treat only the physical components (i.e. computation, communication, and memory blocks) as resources and manipulate the component to application mapping to optimize various parameters (e.g. energy efficiency). To further enhance the optimization potential, in addition to the physical resources we propose to manipulate abstract resources (i.e. voltage/frequency operating point, the fault-tolerance strength, the degree of parallelism, and the configuration architecture). The proposed framework (i.e. VRAP) encapsulates methods, algorithms, and hardware blocks to provide each application with the abstract resources tailored to its needs. To test the efficacy of this concept, we have developed three distinct self adaptive environments: (i) Private Operating Environment (POE), (ii) Private Reliability Environment (PRE), and (iii) Private Configuration Environment (PCE) that collectively ensure that each application meets its deadlines using minimal platform resources. In this work several novel architectural enhancements, algorithms and policies are presented to realize the virtual runtime application partitions efficiently. Considering the future design trends, we have chosen Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) and Network on Chips (NoCs) to test the feasibility of our approach. Specifically, we have chosen Dynamically Reconfigurable Resource Array (DRRA) and McNoC as the representative CGRA and NoC platforms. The proposed techniques are compared and evaluated using a variety of quantitative experiments.     Synthesis of application specific processor architectures for ultra-low energy consumption

    In this paper we suggest that further energy savings can be achieved by a new approach to synthesis of embedded processor cores, where the architecture is tailored to the algorithms that the core executes. In the context of embedded processor synthesis, both single-core and many-core, the types of algorithms and demands on the execution efficiency are usually known at the chip design time. This knowledge can be utilised at the design stage to synthesise architectures optimised for energy consumption. Firstly, we present an overview of both traditional energy saving techniques and new developments in architectural approaches to energy-efficient processing. Secondly, we propose a picoMIPS architecture that serves as an architectural template for energy-efficient synthesis. As a case study, we show how the picoMIPS architecture can be tailored to an energy efficient execution of the DCT algorithm

The primary memory is often associated with addressable semiconductor memory, i.e. integrated circuits consisting of silicon-based transistors, used for example as primary memory but also other purposes in computers and other digital electronic devices. The secondary/auxiliary memory, in comparison provides program and data storage that is slower to access but offers larger capacity. Examples include external hard drives, portable flash drives, CDs, and DVDs. These devices and media must be either plugged in or inserted into a computer in order to be accessed by the system. Since secondary storage technology is not always connected to the computer, it is commonly used for backing up data. The term storage is often used to describe secondary memory. Secondary memory stores a large amount of data at lesser cost per byte than primary memory; this makes secondary storage about two orders of magnitude less expensive than primary storage. There are two main types of semiconductor memory: volatile and nonvolatile. Examples of non-volatile memory are ‘Flash’ memory (sometimes used as secondary, sometimes primary computer memory) and ROM/PROM/EPROM/EEPROM memory (used for firmware such as boot programs). Examples of volatile memory are primary memory (typically dynamic RAM, DRAM), and fast CPU cache memory (typically static RAM, SRAM, which is fast but energy-consuming and offer lower memory capacity per are a unit than DRAM). Non-volatile memory technologies in Si-based electronics date back to the 1990s. Flash memory is widely used in consumer electronic products such as cellphones and music players and NAND Flash-based solid-state disks (SSDs) are increasingly displacing hard disk drives as the primary storage device in laptops, desktops, and even data centers. The integration limit of Flash memories is approaching, and many new types of memory to replace conventional Flash memories have been proposed. The rapid increase of leakage currents in Silicon CMOS transistors with scaling poses a big challenge for the integration of SRAM memories. There is also the case of susceptibility to read/write failure with low power schemes. As a result of this, over the past decade, there has been an extensive pooling of time, resources and effort towards developing emerging memory technologies like Resistive RAM (ReRAM/RRAM), STT-MRAM, Domain Wall Memory and Phase Change Memory(PRAM). Emerging non-volatile memory technologies promise new memories to store more data at less cost than the expensive-to build silicon chips used by popular consumer gadgets including digital cameras, cell phones and portable music players. These new memory technologies combine the speed of static random-access memory (SRAM), the density of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and the non-volatility of Flash memory and so become very attractive as another possibility for future memory hierarchies. The research and information on these Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technologies has matured over the last decade. These NVMs are now being explored thoroughly nowadays as viable replacements for conventional SRAM based memories even for the higher levels of the memory hierarchy. Many other new classes of emerging memory technologies such as transparent and plastic, three-dimensional(3-D), and quantum dot memory technologies have also gained tremendous popularity in recent years...En el campo de la informática, el término ‘memoria’ se refiere generalmente a dispositivos que son usados para almacenar información que posteriormente será usada en diversos dispositivos, desde computadoras personales (PC), móviles, dispositivos inteligentes, etc. La memoria principal del sistema se utiliza para almacenar los datos e instrucciones de los procesos que se encuentre en ejecución, por lo que se requiere que funcionen a alta velocidad (por ejemplo, DRAM). La memoria principal está implementada habitualmente mediante memorias semiconductoras direccionables, siendo DRAM y SRAM los principales exponentes. Por otro lado, la memoria auxiliar o secundaria proporciona almacenaje(para ficheros, por ejemplo); es más lenta pero ofrece una mayor capacidad. Ejemplos típicos de memoria secundaria son discos duros, memorias flash portables, CDs y DVDs. Debido a que estos dispositivos no necesitan estar conectados a la computadora de forma permanente, son muy utilizados para almacenar copias de seguridad. La memoria secundaria almacena una gran cantidad de datos aun coste menor por bit que la memoria principal, siendo habitualmente dos órdenes de magnitud más barata que la memoria primaria. Existen dos tipos de memorias de tipo semiconductor: volátiles y no volátiles. Ejemplos de memorias no volátiles son las memorias Flash (algunas veces usadas como memoria secundaria y otras veces como memoria principal) y memorias ROM/PROM/EPROM/EEPROM (usadas para firmware como programas de arranque). Ejemplos de memoria volátil son las memorias DRAM (RAM dinámica), actualmente la opción predominante a la hora de implementar la memoria principal, y las memorias SRAM (RAM estática) más rápida y costosa, utilizada para los diferentes niveles de cache. Las tecnologías de memorias no volátiles basadas en electrónica de silicio se remontan a la década de1990. Una variante de memoria de almacenaje por carga denominada como memoria Flash es mundialmente usada en productos electrónicos de consumo como telefonía móvil y reproductores de música mientras NAND Flash solid state disks(SSDs) están progresivamente desplazando a los dispositivos de disco duro como principal unidad de almacenamiento en computadoras portátiles, de escritorio e incluso en centros de datos. En la actualidad, hay varios factores que amenazan la actual predominancia de memorias semiconductoras basadas en cargas (capacitivas). Por un lado, se está alcanzando el límite de integración de las memorias Flash, lo que compromete su escalado en el medio plazo. Por otra parte, el fuerte incremento de las corrientes de fuga de los transistores de silicio CMOS actuales, supone un enorme desafío para la integración de memorias SRAM. Asimismo, estas memorias son cada vez más susceptibles a fallos de lectura/escritura en diseños de bajo consumo. Como resultado de estos problemas, que se agravan con cada nueva generación tecnológica, en los últimos años se han intensificado los esfuerzos para desarrollar nuevas tecnologías que reemplacen o al menos complementen a las actuales. Los transistores de efecto campo eléctrico ferroso (FeFET en sus siglas en inglés) se consideran una de las alternativas más prometedores para sustituir tanto a Flash (por su mayor densidad) como a DRAM (por su mayor velocidad), pero aún está en una fase muy inicial de su desarrollo.     Mocarabe: High-Performance Time-Multiplexed Overlays for FPGAs

    Coarse-grained reconfigurable array (CGRA) overlays can improve dataflow kernel throughput by an order of magnitude over Vivado HLS on Xilinx Alveo U280. This is possible with a combination of carefully floorplanned high-frequency (645 - 768 MHz Torus, 788 - 856 MHz Mesh, 583 - 746 MHz BFT) design and a scalable, communication-aware compiler. Our CGRA architecture supports configurable Processing Element (PE) functionality supported by a configurable number of communication channels to match application demands. Compared to recent FPGA overlays like 4×4 ADRES and HyCUBE implementations in CGRA-ME, our design operates at a faster clock frequency by up to 3.4×, while scaling to an orders-of-magnitude larger array size of 19×69 on Xilinx Alveo U280. We propose a novel topology agnostic ILP placer that formulates the CGRA placement problem into an ILP problem. Our ILP placer optimizes placement regardless of topology and even for non-linear objective functions by using pre-computed placement costs as inputs to the ILP problem formulation. Using the ILP placer reduces placement quadratic wirelength up to 37% compared to the commonly used simulated annealing approach but increases runtime from less than a minute to hours. Our communication-aware compiler targets HLS objectives such as initiation interval (II) and minimizes communication cost using an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation. Unlike SDC schedulers in FPGA HLS tools, we treat data movement as a first-class citizen by encoding the space and time resources of the communication network in the ILP formulation. Given the same constraints on operational resources as Vivado HLS, we can retain our target II and achieve up to 9.2× higher frequency. We compare Torus and Mesh topologies, and show Mesh has less latency per area compared to Torus for the same benchmarks

    Efficient implementation of channel estimation algorithm for beamforming

    Abstract. The future 5G mobile network technology is expected to offer significantly better performance than its predecessors. Improved data rates in conjunction with low latency is believed to enable technological revolutions such as self-driving cars. To achieve faster data rates, MIMO systems can be utilized. These systems enable the use of spatial filtering technique known as beamforming. Beamforming that is based on the preacquired channel matrix is computationally very demanding causing challenges in achieving low latency. By acquiring the channel matrix as efficiently as possible, we can facilitate this challenge. In this thesis we examined the implementation of channel estimation algorithm for beamforming with a digital signal processor specialized in vector computation. We present implementations for different antenna configurations based on three different approaches. The results show that the best performance is achieved by applying the algorithm according to the limitations given by the system and the processor architecture. Although the exploitation of the parallel architecture was proved to be challenging, the implementation of the algorithm would have benefitted from the greater amount of parallelism. The current parallel resources will be a challenge especially in the future as the size of antenna configurations is expected to grow.Keilanmuodostuksen tarvitseman kanavaestimointialgoritmin tehokas toteutus. Tämän suorituskyvyn tarjoamat suuret datanopeudet yhdistettynä pieneen latenssiin uskotaan mahdollistavan esimerkiksi itsestään ajavat autot. Suurempien datanopeuksien saavuttamiseksi voidaan hyödyntää monitiekanavassa käytettävää MIMO-systeemiä, joka mahdollistaa keilanmuodostuksena tunnetun spatiaalisen suodatusmenetelmän käytön. Etukäteen hankittuun kanavatilatietoon perustuva keilanmuodostus on laskennallisesti erittäin kallista. Tämä aiheuttaa haasteita verkon pienen latenssivaatimuksen saavuttamisessa. Tässä työssä tutkittiin keilanmuodostukselle tarkoitetun kanavaestimointialgoritmin tehokasta toteutusta hyödyntäen vektorilaskentaan erikoistunutta prosessoriarkkitehtuuria. Työssä esitellään kolmea eri lähestymistapaa hyödyntävät toteutukset eri kokoisille antennikonfiguraatioille. Tuloksista nähdään, että paras suorituskyky saavutetaan sovittamalla algoritmi järjestelmän ja arkkitehtuurin asettamien rajoitusten mukaisesti. Vaikka rinnakkaisarkkitehtuurin hyödyntäminen asetti omat haasteensa, olisi algoritmin toteutus hyötynyt suuremmasta rinnakkaisuuden määrästä. Nykyinen rinnakkaisuuden määrä tulee olemaan haaste erityisesti tulevaisuudessa, sillä antennikonfiguraatioiden koon odotetaan kasvavan

    Reconfigurable acceleration of Recurrent Neural Networks

    Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have been successful in a wide range of applications involving temporal sequences such as natural language processing, speech recognition and video analysis. However, RNNs often require a significant amount of memory and computational resources. In addition, the recurrent nature and data dependencies in RNN computations can lead to system stall, resulting in low throughput and high latency. This work describes novel parallel hardware architectures for accelerating RNN inference using Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, which considers the data dependencies and high computational costs of RNNs. The first contribution of this thesis is a latency-hiding architecture that utilizes column-wise matrix-vector multiplication instead of the conventional row-wise operation to eliminate data dependencies and improve the throughput of RNN inference designs. This architecture is further enhanced by a configurable checkerboard tiling strategy which allows large dimensions of weight matrices, while supporting element-based parallelism and vector-based parallelism. The presented reconfigurable RNN designs show significant speedup over CPU, GPU, and other FPGA designs. The second contribution of this thesis is a weight reuse approach for large RNN models with weights stored in off-chip memory, running with a batch size of one. A novel blocking-batching strategy is proposed to optimize the throughput of large RNN designs on FPGAs by reusing the RNN weights. Performance analysis is also introduced to enable FPGA designs to achieve the best trade-off between area, power consumption and performance. Promising power efficiency improvement has been achieved in addition to speeding up over CPU and GPU designs. The third contribution of this thesis is a low latency design for RNNs based on a partially-folded hardware architecture. It also introduces a technique that balances initiation interval of multi-layer RNN inferences to increase hardware efficiency and throughput while reducing latency. The approach is evaluated on a variety of applications, including gravitational wave detection and Bayesian RNN-based ECG anomaly detection. To facilitate the use of this approach, we open source an RNN template which enables the generation of low-latency FPGA designs with efficient resource utilization using high-level synthesis tools.Open Acces

    Combining dynamic and static scheduling in high-level synthesis

    Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are starting to become mainstream devices for custom computing, particularly deployed in data centres. However, using these FPGA devices requires familiarity with digital design at a low abstraction level. In order to enable software engineers without a hardware background to design custom hardware, high-level synthesis (HLS) tools automatically transform a high-level program, for example in C/C++, into a low-level hardware description. A central task in HLS is scheduling: the allocation of operations to clock cycles. The classic approach to scheduling is static, in which each operation is mapped to a clock cycle at compile time, but recent years have seen the emergence of dynamic scheduling, in which an operation’s clock cycle is only determined at run-time. Both approaches have their merits: static scheduling can lead to simpler circuitry and more resource sharing, while dynamic scheduling can lead to faster hardware when the computation has a non-trivial control flow. This thesis proposes a scheduling approach that combines the best of both worlds. My idea is to use existing program analysis techniques in software designs, such as probabilistic analysis and formal verification, to optimize the HLS hardware. First, this thesis proposes a tool named DASS that uses a heuristic-based approach to identify the code regions in the input program that are amenable to static scheduling and synthesises them into statically scheduled components, also known as static islands, leaving the top-level hardware dynamically scheduled. Second, this thesis addresses a problem of this approach: that the analysis of static islands and their dynamically scheduled surroundings are separate, where one treats the other as black boxes. We apply static analysis including dependence analysis between static islands and their dynamically scheduled surroundings to optimize the offsets of static islands for high performance. We also apply probabilistic analysis to estimate the performance of the dynamically scheduled part and use this information to optimize the static islands for high area efficiency. Finally, this thesis addresses the problem of conservatism in using sequential control flow designs which can limit the throughput of the hardware. We show this challenge can be solved by formally proving that certain control flows can be safely parallelised for high performance. This thesis demonstrates how to use automated formal verification to find out-of-order loop pipelining solutions and multi-threading solutions from a sequential program.Open Acces
