Encoding dynamics for multiscale community detection: Markov time sweeping for the Map equation
The detection of community structure in networks is intimately related to
finding a concise description of the network in terms of its modules. This
notion has been recently exploited by the Map equation formalism (M. Rosvall
and C.T. Bergstrom, PNAS, 105(4), pp.1118--1123, 2008) through an
information-theoretic description of the process of coding inter- and
intra-community transitions of a random walker in the network at stationarity.
However, a thorough study of the relationship between the full Markov dynamics
and the coding mechanism is still lacking. We show here that the original Map
coding scheme, which is both block-averaged and one-step, neglects the internal
structure of the communities and introduces an upper scale, the `field-of-view'
limit, in the communities it can detect. As a consequence, Map is well tuned to
detect clique-like communities but can lead to undesirable overpartitioning
when communities are far from clique-like. We show that a signature of this
behavior is a large compression gap: the Map description length is far from its
ideal limit. To address this issue, we propose a simple dynamic approach that
introduces time explicitly into the Map coding through the analysis of the
weighted adjacency matrix of the time-dependent multistep transition matrix of
the Markov process. The resulting Markov time sweeping induces a dynamical
zooming across scales that can reveal (potentially multiscale) community
structure above the field-of-view limit, with the relevant partitions indicated

Motion estimation and CABAC VLSI co-processors for real-time high-quality H.264/AVC video coding
Real-time and high-quality video coding is gaining a wide interest in the research and industrial community for different applications. H.264/AVC, a recent standard for high performance video coding, can be successfully exploited in several scenarios including digital video broadcasting, high-definition TV and DVD-based systems, which require to sustain up to tens of Mbits/s. To that purpose this paper proposes optimized architectures for H.264/AVC most critical tasks, Motion estimation and context adaptive binary arithmetic coding. Post synthesis results on sub-micron CMOS standard-cells technologies show that the proposed architectures can actually process in real-time 720 Ă— 480 video sequences at 30 frames/s and grant more than 50 Mbits/s. The achieved circuit complexity and power consumption budgets are suitable for their integration in complex VLSI multimedia systems based either on AHB bus centric on-chip communication system or on novel Network-on-Chip (NoC) infrastructures for MPSoC (Multi-Processor System on Chip
Distributing Leadership for Initiating University-Community Engagement
Facilitating community engagement in education is promoted and emphasised as an investment strategy (Garlick 2000). However, the responsibility for facilitating university-community engagement rests upon university personnel to initiate collaborations with the community. This paper describes and analyses leadership processes for initiating community engagement with the new Queensland University of Technology campus at Caboolture. Data collection and analysis involved observation of practices, and coding interviews, minutes of meetings, and written correspondence with a wide range of participants (i.e., senior QUT staff, lecturers, preservice teachers, principals, school executives and teachers, and other community members). Results indicated that leadership processes involved: (1) articulating visionary directions, (2) communication for instigating change processes, (3) motivating potential key stakeholders, (4) promoting collaboration and team effort, and (5) distributing leadership. This study highlighted the impact of creating positive working environments for developing collaborative partnerships. However, new campuses need to shape university goals to suit individual contexts, which will require considerable input from key stakeholders. Initiating community engagement requires university personnel to connect key stakeholders, and the distribution of leadership will be essential in order to sustain university-community collaborations
The Adaptation Challenges and Strategies of Adolescent Aboriginal Athletes Competing Off Reserve
Within the motivation literature, it has been indicated that athletes respond more effectively to sport’s contextual challenges through effective adaptation skills. Fiske identified five core motives as facilitators of the adaptation process across cultures: belonging, understanding, controlling, self-enhancement, and trusting. Through a cultural sport psychology approach, the adaptation challenges and strategies of Canadian Aboriginal adolescent athletes from one community (Wikwemikong) are described as they traveled off reserve to compete in mainstream sporting events. Concurrently, Fiske’s core motives are considered in relation to youth sport participants from the aforementioned Aboriginal community. Culture sensitive research methods among the Wikwemikong, including community meetings, talking circles (TCs), indigenous coding, and coauthoring, were employed in this article. Data are reflected in three themes: (a) challenges pursuing sport outside of the Aboriginal community in advance of bicultural encounters, (b) challenging bicultural encounters in Canadian mainstream sport contexts, and (c) specific responses to racism and discrimination
