    Communication equilibria with partially verifiable types.

    This paper studies the set of equilibria that can be achieved by adding general communication systems to Bayesian games in which some information can be certified or, equivalently, in which players’ types are partially verifiable. Certifiability of information is formalized by a set of available reports for each player that varies with the true state of the world. Given these state-dependent sets of reports, we characterize canonical equilibria for which generalized versions of the revelation principle are valid.     Multistage communication with and without verifiable types

    We survey the main results on strategic information transmission, which is often referred to as ``persuasion" when types are verifiable and as ``cheap talk" when they are not. In the simplest ``cheap talk'' model, an informed player sends a single message to a receiver who makes a decision. The players' utilities depend on the sender's information and the receiver's decision, but not on the sender's message. Furthermore, the messages that are available to the sender do not depend on his true information. As is well-known, such a unilateral ``cheap talk" can affect the sender's decision at equilibrium. In a more general model, both players can exchange simultaneous costless messages during several stages before the final decision. The utility functions are unchanged. Multistage conversation allows the players to reach more equilibrium outcomes, which possibly Pareto dominate the original ones. More precisely, the set of equilibrium outcomes of long cheap talk games is fully characterized; it increases with the number of communication stages and can become even larger if no deadline is imposed. Concentrating on cheap talk is not appropriate if the informed player can influence the decision maker by producing unfalsifiable documents. In order to capture this possibility formally, one assumes that the informed player's set of messages depends on his private information. The literature has mostly dealt with unilateral persuasion. But multistage, bilateral communication enables the players to reach more equilibrium outcomes in the case of verifiable types as in the case of unverifiable ones.     This study examines compensation strategies (techniques for dealing with knowledge gaps between learner and interlocutor), relates them to synoptic and ectenic learning (Ehrman and Leaver, 2002, 2003), and suggests reasons for the fact that ectenic learners, who need conscious control of what they are learning, seemed to communicate meanings of words to judges better than the synoptics, who feel freer to rely on their intuition and pre-conscious processing, but also tend to use more novel and therefore less readily comprehensible figures of speech.     Session Types for Broadcasting

    Up to now session types have been used under the assumptions of point to point communication, to ensure the linearity of session endpoints, and reliable communication, to ensure send/receive duality. In this paper we define a session type theory for broadcast communication semantics that by definition do not assume point to point and reliable communication. Our session framework lies on top of the parametric framework of broadcasting psi-calculi, giving insights on developing session types within a parametric framework. Our session type theory enjoys the properties of soundness and safety. We further believe that the solutions proposed will eventually provide a deeper understanding of how session types principles should be applied in the general case of communication semantics.Comment: In Proceedings PLACES 2014, arXiv:1406.331

    Session types revisited

    Session types are a formalism used to model structured communication-based programming. A binary session type describes communication by specifying the type and direction of data exchanged between two parties. When session types and session processes are added to the syntax of standard π-calculus they give rise to additional separate syntactic categories. As a consequence, when new type features are added, there is duplication of effort in the theory: the proofs of properties must be checked both on standard types and on session types. We show that session types are encodable into standard π- types, relying on linear and variant types. Besides being an expressivity result, the encoding (i) removes the above redundancies in the syntax, and (ii) the properties of session types are derived as straightforward corollaries, exploiting the corresponding properties of standard π-types. The robustness of the encoding is tested on a few extensions of session types, including subtyping, polymorphism and higher-order communications

    Current communication literature regarding personal relations is limited by its focus on romantic, friendship and friends with benefits relations. To better understand the types of relations college-aged women practice, this study sought to explore (a) the types of cross-sex relations college-aged women practice (b) the reasons they give for practicing the relations and (c) the identities they construct by practicing the relations. Results indicated a myriad of relational types. Types were categorized under three supra-categories and were explored in terms of their description, initiation, maintenance and communication rules, as well as their benefits and drawbacks. Identities associated with the relations were also examined, along with relational fluidity, commitment and intimacy

    A broad study in 43 European countries shows that 70% of communication professionals encounter at least one crisis a year, mostly institutional, related to the performance of the organization or a crisis in management or leadership. Organizational response and image restoration approaches are mainly based on information, sympathy and defense strategies. Traditional media relations and personal communication are the most important instruments used in crisis communication, while social media is used less often. The variation of crisis types, responses and instruments across European regions and types of organization indicate that economic and cultural aspects play a role in defining a crisis and communicating about it

    Causal Consistency for Reversible Multiparty Protocols

    In programming models with a reversible semantics, computational steps can be undone. This paper addresses the integration of reversible semantics into process languages for communication-centric systems equipped with behavioral types. In prior work, we introduced a monitors-as-memories approach to seamlessly integrate reversible semantics into a process model in which concurrency is governed by session types (a class of behavioral types), covering binary (two-party) protocols with synchronous communication. The applicability and expressiveness of the binary setting, however, is limited. Here we extend our approach, and use it to define reversible semantics for an expressive process model that accounts for multiparty (n-party) protocols, asynchronous communication, decoupled rollbacks, and abstraction passing. As main result, we prove that our reversible semantics for multiparty protocols is causally-consistent. A key technical ingredient in our developments is an alternative reversible semantics with atomic rollbacks, which is conceptually simple and is shown to characterize decoupled rollbacks.Comment: Extended, revised version of a PPDP'17 paper (https://doi.org/10.1145/3131851.3131864
