    Technology for Low Resolution Space Based RSO Detection and Characterisation

    Space Situational Awareness (SSA) refers to all activities to detect, identify and track objects in Earth orbit. SSA is critical to all current and future space activities and protect space assets by providing access control, conjunction warnings, and monitoring status of active satellites. Currently SSA methods and infrastructure are not sufficient to account for the proliferations of space debris. In response to the need for better SSA there has been many different areas of research looking to improve SSA most of the requiring dedicated ground or space-based infrastructure. In this thesis, a novel approach for the characterisation of RSO’s (Resident Space Objects) from passive low-resolution space-based sensors is presented with all the background work performed to enable this novel method. Low resolution space-based sensors are common on current satellites, with many of these sensors being in space using them passively to detect RSO’s can greatly augment SSA with out expensive infrastructure or long lead times. One of the largest hurtles to overcome with research in the area has to do with the lack of publicly available labelled data to test and confirm results with. To overcome this hurtle a simulation software, ORBITALS, was created. To verify and validate the ORBITALS simulator it was compared with the Fast Auroral Imager images, which is one of the only publicly available low-resolution space-based images found with auxiliary data. During the development of the ORBITALS simulator it was found that the generation of these simulated images are computationally intensive when propagating the entire space catalog. To overcome this an upgrade of the currently used propagation method, Specialised General Perturbation Method 4th order (SGP4), was performed to allow the algorithm to run in parallel reducing the computational time required to propagate entire catalogs of RSO’s. From the results it was found that the standard facet model with a particle swarm optimisation performed the best estimating an RSO’s attitude with a 0.66 degree RMSE accuracy across a sequence, and ~1% MAPE accuracy for the optical properties. This accomplished this thesis goal of demonstrating the feasibility of low-resolution passive RSO characterisation from space-based platforms in a simulated environment

    Financial reporting in Europe: Accounting for regulatory and technical challenges

    This thesis explores the challenges facing financial reporting in Europe both regulatory and technical in nature. This has involved research into the background of European legislation and conducting face to face semi-structured interviews with senior elite actors from institutions governing the regulatory and technical arrangements of general-purpose financial reporting practice in Europe. European companies are required to disclose information about their financial affairs. The European legislation governing company financial reporting was delegated to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) by the EU institutions via Regulation 1606/2002. This thesis argues that European agencies (represented by EFRAG) are caught in a devolved regulatory relationship where the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has been able to assume a relatively strong self-regulatory position. This weakens the agency that European legislative institutions have over their own legislation with regards to financial reporting practice. This thesis argues this loss of agency by European institutions over their legislation governing accounting practice is not a fait accompli but is challenged and contested as European institutions seek and need a more co-regulated arrangement. A key argument developed in this thesis is that regulatory arrangements governing accounting practice are evolving in terms of the distribution of responsibilities and control over European financial reporting practice. To understand how the regulatory landscape governing European accounting practice is changing we employ an investigative lens that is grounded in accounting. This investigative lens employs three elements that are regarded in the literature review as significant technical challenges facing accounting practice in Europe. The first of these is retaining or not prudent accounting practice, the second is concerned with the development of non-financial reporting and the third, concerns with installing the public interest not just investor interests in financial disclosures. It is through this investigative lens that this thesis assesses the extent to which regulatory arrangements and agency governing accounting practice in Europe are shifting sands

    “you don’t realise how it how it makes you feel till ya talk about it ya know like right now”: A psychosocial exploration of the emotional experience of the key person role in nursery settings in the Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) sector

    This exploratory research has drawn upon a psychoanalytically informed methodology to explore the experiences of three key people who work in nurseries in the Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) sector within one Local Authority in the UK. The PVI sector has been subject to additional systemic pressures compared to Maintained Nursery Settings (MNS), which have greater access to funding, training and qualified teachers. Through opportunistic sampling, the participants who volunteered were specifically from private non-profit nursery settings and were working with preschool aged children. Hollway and Jefferson’s (2013) Free Association Narrative Inquiry (FANI) and Joffe and Elsey’s (2014) Grid Elaboration Method (GEM) were utilised to elicit participant narratives that were informed by emotion rather than logic across two interviews. This research is founded on a psychosocial epistemology and ontology and therefore draws upon the understanding of defended intersubjectivity (Ivey, 2022) to inform the analysis of the data through the countertransference responses in the interview interactions. The data was analysed using a Reflexive Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2022) through semantic coding (conscious emotive data) and latent coding (exploring unconscious defence mechanisms) across the data set. Four overarching themes were identified: emotional labour, knowing to seek certainty, working within a network of relationships around the child and promoting school readiness. This research further highlights the influence of both individual and social defences in conceptualising the key person role. It is hoped that this research will extend the literature base for educational psychology practice in the early years to enable the profession to provide the most efficient services to children, families and early years practitioners in PVI nurseries
